Petitioned by a New York Employer
This happened a couple of years ago but I heard the agency is being active in recruiting again and raising the termination of contract to $45,000. When the agency was recruiting in Philippines, they were really nice. They check you religiously thru email and phone calls. They paint a very good picture. They promised good accomodation, guaranteed jobs and they will put you in the best NY hospitals. They even provided a job offer to show during the consular interview on how much you get paid ,they will shoulder "everything" to make you comfortable and have an easy transition. As soon as my wife arrived, the one who picked her up in the airport warned her about the place. She told her to be careful and dont stay out late because the area is not safe. If you dont need to get out of the apt, dont. My wife to endure the sub par housing accomodation, they could not find her a job. They ask her if she can work as an aide until they can find her an RN job. I came here via spousal visa a couple of years ago and have to go to CA where my parents is living because my wife cant afford to support us. I have to ask my Aunt for a loan just to bailout my wife, so she can come here in CA. Three years after, Im still paying the loan. My life is better now but we could have been more careful choosing an agency then. I blame our mentality before...any agency is okay as long as they gave as a ticket to the US, even if it means selling our souls to the devil (agency). Again, even if you have less options, you still have a choice.

Observation : Re : American Dream
I did not realize that. Probably that's the reason most of the RN in the Philippines struggles in iv insertion skill testing.

My wife agency provided a "shelter" for 3 months until they can find her a job. With or without a job, she needs to look for her own house/apt. She have to stay in a 1 room divided by 3 partition to house 4 people. No heater, no hot water, and you have to take a narrow staircase going to the 3rd floor. It's in the middle of Harlem. If she stays more than 3 months, even if her agency cannot find her a job, she needs to pay them. Thinking about it again just makes me furious!

Petitioned by a New York Employer
There are things we do in the Philippines that is "okay"- crowded dormitory housing, reckless drivers, hospitals asking volunteers to pay so they can volunteer (irony dont you think?), urinating in the streets, and the list go on. Are these the same reasons why we are looking a life outside Philippines? So we can provide a better life for ourselves and our family? We have a choice even if we have less options. Dont fall to greedy agencies and employers who take advantage of people. There are a lot of good employers out there.

Observation : Re : American Dream
New RN does not pay for a residency program. They get paid like regular RN but at a lower or entry level rate. They have to show that they are competent before they get off the training period.

Petitioned by a New York Employer
We have the same mentality when my wife went to NY. We thought that since it will just "a few months" of "inconvenience". I am also afraid for you that your employer is not telling where will you be working.I just hope that you have enough means to support yourself and your family during "in the first few months". I agree with you when you say you have to think about your future and not just the few months of arrival. We are still paying the price of our "first few months" with my wife NY employer. Looking back, if we opted a different employer, if we only double check the employment and housing condition, we could have started differently and avoided the "pain". To everybody - Since this topic is very close to me and until now I am still paying the loan that we had just to bailout my wife from her employer in NY, I believe that it's my responsibility to share my experience. The analogy of a dormitory during college days is not a good picture of the housing condition where my wife used to live. Dormitory living, 7-8 person in a room is the "norm" in the phil and it's not "illegal". Living in a room ,built for 1 person, with 4 other people with no heater in a NY winter nights is just downright illegal. And this is just one of the many problems You have a choice here...this is not just pain, it will be torture.

Observation : Re : American Dream
I dont know what a graduate nurse program is. The "new RN residency program" are for New grad RN, Foreign hired RN without US hospital experience, re-entry nurse (nurse who came back from retirement, did not practice for several months/years).

Observation : Re : American Dream
I attended a hospital orientation for new employess last week with one of the hospital in southhern california. 6 of us attended. 3 filipino RN, 2 new US RN grad and 1 Nurse practioner who is returning to bedside nursing because her position was cancelled (read lay-off, economic crisis) and it has been hard for her to look for a Nurse Practioner job. One of the Filipino RN just came last here in the US last May 08 with a spousal visa. He's a second courser, no previous hospital exp and was hired for "New RN residency Program" offered by the hospital. I cant help but notice how he struggled, how he stattered during the introduction " I..I... I am a poreign grad....ammm, amm, my name is ______, I came here .... I am a new grad...." I guess you see the picture. I saw how he struggled more during the skill testing and return demo. Making fun of my "kababayan" is not my intention. I believe he know his stuff, I also think that he can converse proficiently...I can just see how he struggled in a new environment, new set of equipments and multirace environment. I remember him trying to catch my attention as if saying "pls help me" during the return demo of the IV insertion and use of IV pump and the list go on. He often stays over and skip break and lunch just to catch up with the medical abbreviation, skills and test. After the third day he looks exhausted. He'll have 6 months more of the"New RN residency program" and 1 1/2 years under contract which he cannot quit without him paying the "training contract". Did I say that he was being paid way less that the usual starting salary of a new grad? To think he was not even petirioned by the hospita. I am sure he'll learn in due time. Another reality-check of the american dream, things you might want to consider when your time comes. Hone the skills, keep yourself updated, try to familiarize with US standard. It's a jungle out there.:nuke:

any advice appreciated
When I say be honest, I did not mean to go on the details. I just say " I quit because I believe my license is not safe, and there are practices that are not align with my values " dont go in details..it will appear that you are bad mouthing your previous employers... good luck!

to all NCLEX passers; whats your NLE scores?
Sorry, but I beg to disagree. I see no correlation between NLE vis-a-vis NCLEX. But if you meant on test preparation (study habits)and how good a test taker you are, probably. But the poster may have different reason on the questions.

Opinions on this job offer?
I am new in HH, and I was offered $33.5/hr 40 hours a week (Mon-Fri) 8-5pm. 1 weekend per month, + $5/hr on weekend. $0.56/mile and no calls.
-
any advice appreciated
I'll also be scared if they hire directly from other country....hospital hiring foreign nurses is OK, but hiring for HH??? I am scared for the foreign nurses! run forest run! I also quit after working at a hospital for 3 months because I believe my liscense is not safe...and everytime I go to an interview, I tell them that I quit because my liscense is not safe and I advocate for pt. safety. I dont bad mouth that hospital...and fortunately, until this point, I get hired 100% of the time. Just be honest with your future employers. It is also illegal for your previous Supervisor and HR to badmouth you, you can sue them for this.

how do you answer job interviews?
Sometimes you will appreciate interviewer that tell you upfront that you dont have enough experience, this will save you the guessing game if you pass or fail and you can move on. It's very frustrating, yes, but it's not your fault that you dont have experience... it's the situation. So dont beat up your self. Frustrations are good, it tells that you care and alive.

SLMC-GC technical interview
This is the competency based iterview questions, these kind of interview questions has been the trend to determine "what will a competent nurse do" in a specific situation or if your experienced nurse "what did you do before" in a specific situation. Questions like 1.you were given 4 patient, pt A, B, C, D who will you take care first?" This will determine how you prioritize based on your critical nursing skills. 2. Is there a time where you encounter a diificult family members? This will determine your people management skills Competency based question can be behavioral or critical type. Again, this will determine "what will a comptent nurse do?".

how do you answer job interviews?
On your answers above, you have the right idea but you may want to paraphrase it so you will not appear that you are "you know all" person. The last thing you want is them wanting you to fail so you will look like a "jerk" in the end. If you have enough experience under your sleeve but does not have enough experience in the job you are applying for...you can point to your past experience and state that I was given a chance to do prove myself and I was able to to do the job. I am a quick learner and my past experience hopefully will give you idea that I can do the job. If you are willing to give me a chance, let me prove what I am capable to do. If you dont have experience at all or new grad you can point your past academic experience, past projects that will show that you are a quick learner. Whenever I interview I always have a line,it goes like this " I am a fair person, and employment is a two way thing. The company compensate me for a "good days work" so in return I perform what is expected of me. If I know that I am not contributing or perofrmingwhat's expected of me...I dont wait for verbal reprimand, or worse get fired. I'll do the company a big favor, I either improve or look for a job that I can do". This shows the company your commitment on doing your job. Hope this helps

Interim Permit query
If you have an IP you can work as an Interim Permit Nurse under the direct supervision of a license nurse (S/he will cosign everything you do) within the period of six months or after taking NCLEX or whichever comes first. Provided further that you are here in the US, with SSN and IF you can find a hospital that will hire an IP nurse. ( Most of the RN does not want to precept an IP Nurse since their co-signing) And your employment is contingent upon you passing the NCLEX. In my opinion, if you're here in the US and planning to take the NCLEX, it's not worth it working as an IP Nurse and reviewing at the same time. You might get confused with the "real nursing practice" vis-a-vis "ideal nursing world" which you need to pass NCLEX. Just my 2 cents, it's your decision. Good luck!

Interim Permit query
IP stands for Interim Permit. You can apply for an IP at the same time when you submit your application for NCLEX. If the Board of Nursing (BON) approved it, you can apply for Nursing Position who need an IP to practice. In CA, your name will appear on their website stating that you have an IP I dont know in other states. IP does not have anything to do with other position like nursing assistant. You can apply for nursing assistant even without IP. I forgot to say that you need to be in the US, with SSN before the BON can issue it. Before, they also require a copy of your local (Phil) RN license.
