They said it would be 6 weeks from the January 1st application deadline before we were notified about interviews, so I'm guessing it'll be a few more weeks before we hear anything.

I received an email about a week after I sent mine in. It was just a general "we received your application" email, nothing to exciting. This was back in October though. I'm sure with the holidays and the admission deadline things are a little hectic. If you have concerns about whether they received it you can call. The admissions people are super, super nice and helpful.

Directly from the EEOC website: Although state and federal equal opportunity laws do not clearly forbid employers from making pre-employment inquiries that relate to, or disproportionately screen out members based on race, color, sex, national origin, religion, or age, such inquiries may be used as evidence of an employer's intent to discriminate unless the questions asked can be justified by some business purpose. ..... Generally, employers should not use non job-related questions involving marital status, number and/or ages of children or dependents, or names of spouses or children of the applicant. Such inquiries may be asked after an employment offer has been made and accepted if needed for insurance or other legitimate business purposes. (emphasis mine) So while it is useless to ask these questions because discriminating based on the answers IS illegal, asking the questions themselves is not. The only question that is specifically prohibited is asking about a disability. Employers are explicitly prohibited from making pre-employment inquiries about disability. Prohibited Practices Like I said earlier, its a fine distinction and you can't really tell if they didn't hire you based on the answer to the question or not, so smart hiring managers will not ask such questions. OP, I would just try to deflect in the future. Try to figure out what their concerns may be getting at with the question. So is they ask about a family, say something along the lines of "there is nothing that would interfere with my ability to work my scheduled shifts" or whatever you are comfortable with. Don't lie, but with questions like that, there is no need answer the question directly. That said, I'm guessing her intent wasn't malicious, probably just small talk.

Actually, in most states it is not illegal to ask questions about marital status, families, religion, etc., it is just illegal to base her hiring decisions on your answer. It’s a fine distinction. Not to say that she, or any hiring manager, should ask those types of questions because it definitely has no place in an interview, but it is not illegal.

apham, Congrats on the interview! I am applying for the July start date. While I can't speak to the school itself, I can give you some info about Denver, apartments, etc. I would recommend looking for a place somewhere along the lightrail, or uptown. The school is downtown, so most apartments around there may be a bit on the pricy side, but it is fairly easy to commute on public transportation down there. There are a couple of college campuses downtown (Metro state, UC Denver, CCD) and near wash park (DU), which is right next to the lightrail, so you may be able to find roommates that are students from those campuses. Weather can be all over the place (its about 3 degrees with 8 inches of snow at my house right now, but it was like 60 on Tuesday), but it is almost always sunny :) In my opinion, Denver doesn't have a 'big city feel' but there are a lot of great local restaurants and shops, and a ton, ton of parks, trails and outdoorsy things to do, and of course skiing, all within a couple hours of the metro area. I wouldn't read too much into not getting an email, they said they have not selected anyone for interviews yet. It sounds like they haven't even looked at all the applications yet. Here is the email: Hello Prospective Applicants, We hope you are all doing well and enjoying your Fall as we transition into Winter. We wanted to provide you with information and dates moving forward regarding admission to the College of Nursing’s traditional program that begins Summer 2014. First, we are still working through applications. Many applicants applied within the last two weeks of the application cycle and due to this large influx of applications we are still processing new applications that were submitted through 10/15/2013. Additionally, we will be re-reviewing applications that were initially incomplete (i.e. missing a transcript or transcripts) and updating their statuses. We will ONLY be updating your status with what we have received as of the deadline. We anticipate that all checklists will be correctly reflected by November 4. We will send out an email to the applicants that are truly incomplete and reference you to your checklist for status updates so that you can know what we did receive by the deadline (and what was missing). Interview Day for the traditional program is currently scheduled for November 19th, 2013. This has been posted on our website since September. We anticipate on informing applicants via email to expedite the process and so that you can make the necessary arrangements if applicable. We will not be able to discuss any additional information regarding Interview Day (i.e. times, personal requests, exceptions) until interview selections have been made. Nothing yet for me either. I'm guessing the dates they send out invitations changes every year based on number of applications, applicant pool, staff, etc. I'm hoping it will be soon, but I wouldn't be too worried that you haven't heard yet.

You may also want to try looking outside of Denver. Aurora isnt that far away and home prices are much cheaper there (We just sold a townhome for $152k, which was on the high end of the price range for our area). Westminster, Thornton, Arvada and areas of North Denver are also going to be cheaper than Denver proper. There are actually more hospitals outside of the Metro area anyway. Just a thought :)
