  1. I don't have much advice on the mistake portion, but as far as your long term goal, DO NOT share them so specifically. I have been on interviews where, I shared about wanting to get my masters and specialize as an NP. And I can automatically tell, they were thinking, " She's going to be here for a while and go on to do better, then Ill have to need to fill this position again". Sadly, many managers are looking for someone to fill that one position, and not advance anywhere. it's pathetic. And yes there are many people who Ive worked with who were okay being a nurse forever. I for sure, don't. When asked, just express how you plan on taking advantage of any certifications available specific for the unit/position you are applying to, while you're not entirely sure as to what your long term goals are, you are looking for a position that is going to challenge your growth and potentially gear you in a direction where you would be able to get an idea of where you want to be in the future. You're open to learning so much that inevitably you will find your place as you continue to grow with the opportunity that is infront of you.
  2. I am looking at an Ambulatory Surgery Position and a Hospital for Special Surgery position. I have 2 years prior Med Surg Tele experience. I am not really sure of where I want to go specifically, or specialty wise in nursing, but when I am ready to move on to something else, any opinion on which one of these 2 would make the transition easier. Ambulatory surgery is on a unit where we work with same day surgery and post ops, sometimes pre ops. Orthopedic, Abdominal, shoulder, eye, throat surgeries etc. Hospital for Special Surgery is a top ranked NYC hospital which specializes in orthopedic surgery and rheumatology, spine , knee, wrist, ankle etc. ORTHOPEDIC is the majority. they are both surgeries at the end of the day. If after 5 years, lets say I wanted to move on to oncology or the OR or maybe Emergency room, would experience in these 2 places serve as as a strong background. I can understand the OR will be highly proud with a background in these 2 positions, but truth be to, I have no idea yet where I want to specialize in nursing, I want to start my masters and keep growing but for the mean time, I need to start working since it's been a year and half d/t circumstances. I can assure you that Im either going to stick through one of them for a longgg time because of the support it provides me, or along the line, my interest will grow an I would want to expand in the field. Any info from anyone is appreciated. How either can help your growth, or hinder it. what you know about Hospital for Special Surgery Thank you
  3. @RunbabyRN Yes there are. I actually preferred to get an apt 15-20 minutes max 30 minutes away, so that I can not live around where I worked. Those further areas, are either very expensive, the ones I cant afford, or are actually worse in crime than the area around work. The further I move past the job location the expensive, the further I move before the job location the more crime. It's shocking that many have these experiences. While I think I can make it out there, I won't have anyone with me. No family. Just me, 25 year old, single young female. My aunt and I aren't that close, to be going shopping on day offs. lol. and that okay with me, its a mutual feeling. Management on the a majority of the apartments are negligent per residents reviews. But they suck it up, because its affordable, and they cant go anywhere else.
  4. It's 2.5 Hours away from home, and I even thought about commuting for the first 2-3 weeks to save that pay check to make a move if I found something decent, but realistically driving 2.5 hours to and 2.5 hours from an 8-4 hour day for 3 weeks sounds unrealistic and deadly. I have to mention also, that I became desperate from not being able to secure a job near home. and decided to look back up upstate but the salary quoted to me PLUS not even being able to find a decent clean neighborhood/apartment is speaking to me that this might not be right. The unit is AWESOME!, but I imagine myself living paycheck to paycheck. @ellpark Im not comfortable with roommates. but it's something ive considered in the past. But the reviews of many people who live in the state/area have nothing nice to say but that you have to suck it up with whatever you get. With the high crime and stuff, Im not sure if Id be comfortable getting a roommate. who knows what they're actually like. My aunt works up there, and she is renting a room from someone with the pay she's getting. She has 4 kids, who live at home, but she works up there. She's doing what she can I guess. I haven't signed anything, and the recruiter was trying to help me with finding an apartment, but the areas they were mentioning to me, I was thinking to myself (Does she remember how much she quoted me for salary, she must think Im only moving up there to work to only pay rent and that's it). The places she was recommending might require 1.5/2 of my monthly bi weekly. That leaves me with 1 week works pay to pay my car, insurance, student loans. What am I going to eat. lol. I rather let them offer it to someone else, who maybe this may work better for, although I really wanted the position, which I was offered, I forsee myself struggling.
  5. I went for an interview 2 weeks ago, and received a job offer. Amazing hospital, Amazing unit, the managers are so kind and I ll have to make a move there to work. I am not too fond on moving AGAIN but I can make the sacrifice, But... The salary I was quoted for is nearly half of what I've ever made. And while that isn't the exact reason, I've been trying to find a decent apartment that can atleast sustain me with the salary they quoted me for. Almost all the decent priced apartments are surrounded by crime, and car break ins. The nice ones are about 3 weeks of a pay check . Ill be living alone..-_- and never lived around an envir. like that. I also have student loans, car, billsss. And they want me to start orientation in 2-4 weeks Max. Im saddened at the realization that I would love this job, but the pay is not great at all, and I cant find housing decent enough. I want to tell the managers kindly that I cant find housing decent enough and the quote I was given doesn't allow me to find something decent. And with orientation around the corner, I rather have them offer it to someone else, to the avoid the risks of me not being able to find a place and orient. I want them to be able to consider me in the future though, for sure. Any ideas?
  6. Anyone have any input on these 3 hospitals. Salary, Experience, Anything. I will appreciate it. Thank you
  7. @roser13. Thanks for your input, but my dissatisfaction is not with my current interview opportunities or with these hospitals, but that I am not a country type person and I left there, and have to go back. Any opportunity is a great opportunity, Life outside of it is whats challenging for me. @MissJessRN It's very frustrating. I spend two years to get exp. to relocate to NYC to find work, and it seems like people with 3 years exp is preferred there now. I cant get a break. There are new grads getting jobs into ER Departments which is my passion!! but my 2 years exp cant get me in. It's frustrating. But I cant sit around, eventually the right opportunity should come by. In the mean time, Im taking advantage of the opportunities in front of me. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU! missJESSRN
  8. I have interviews next week at : 1) Albany Medical Center 2) Glens falls Hospital 3) St. Peters Health Partners. To be frank, Im not too happy to be heading back Upstate, since I left there to find work in NYC after gaining some experience. But Ive been on tons of interviews in NYC all to no result. All my Albany Med, Glens Falls employee, or St. Peters folks, If you can shed some information about these hospitals I would appreciate it. Salary: Hospital Status: Best place for housing. : Your experience there: I plan on doing a few more years and try again in NYC or just move to another state entirely. Life has been rough these 2 years. The country life really isn't for me but I have to do what I have to. Thank you
  9. I worked as a med surg rn for a hospital. But floated to the ER numerous times, when needed. My duties there was to take on the care of the patients who were in the process of being stabilized and were to be admitted to medsurg. So in a nut shell, when a patient came to the emergency room, they were stabilized by the ER nurse. But obviously had other orders that needed to be executed immediately for that patient. So when I floated to the ER, I took those patients in, max I took were 8 patients (YEA, I was loosing it but kept it together) they were slowly coming in, starting with 2, then 4 then 5 and so on. The pace was so much faster too. ANYWAY, How can I add this on to my experience on my resume. I wanted to have a separate subtitle for this extra skill I took on. Any ideas please? Thank you
  10. That's great. But don't let some roses blind you from what you are feeling. It's like you wanting to leave someone for cheating on you and they show up everytime with chocolates, and you decide to stay, over and over. Don't be blinded by that gesture, send out your resumes, secure a job first, before leaving your current one, and be appreciated much better than some roses. Good Luck
  11. @SionainnRN, yea, I appreciate you so much for pointing that out because I think you are very right about that. We may mean something one way, but be taken differently by another. I'll be very careful about my wording. Thank You.
  12. Thank you guys. @SionainnRN, I can't place blame on the victim during the interview, it would only make me look bad. My focus is what this whole unfortunate situation has taught me, which is patience, with people and life. PERIOD. That's exactly what it has done.
  13. If a record is expunged, for the most part it shouldn't be visible, unless you are applying to government related/FBI sort f Jobs. But if the record can be visible to the BON for whatever reasons, Calling them and speaking with someone about it to get their perspective is best. Also, providing things that show that you have been out of trouble and have been dedicating to positive things. If the state denied you( to which I HOPE they dont), you can APPEAL it. But I almost feel like they would have "their" reason for denying you IF they did, so to appeal, you;ll have to have strong back up and come back , or atleast prepare yourself strategically. Sometimes it can get unfair. but If you can , involve yourself in community services, volunteer work to shadow your positive character development. That should speak some volume.
  14. @jodygirl ..Thank you for your response! it's appreciated. Yes, I feel like I will be at more ease to disclose it versus not. If I got the job disclosing it, GREAT!!! If I don't get it...SUCKS... If I don't disclose it and I don't get it...I WILL MENTALLY TORUTURE MYSELF FOR NOT DOING SO. I appreciate your words.. THANK YOU!
