Assistance in Finding Nursing Shoes
Hey all, I am starting nursing school in a couple of weeks and my school requires us to wear white leather/pleather shoes without logos for clinicals. I am currently having a problem since I have a relatively large shoe size (size 15) and I have yet to find a nursing supply store that carries anything in my shoe size. If you could recommend any websites I would be greatly appreciative.

Having a hard time with NVCC prerequisites and application...
This information should answer all of your questions: 1) You do not need to retake these courses once you are in the nursing program. All the application literature says is that, if you wait to take these courses once you are in the nursing program, then you CANNOT take them until the designated semester. For example, you are taking Pharmacology next semester. If you instead wait to take this class when you are in the nursing program, then you cannot take it until the second semester of the program. 2) Since you took Chemistry over 10 years ago, you are going to need to at least take CHM 101. They do not consider your grade in high school algebra when making an admissions decision, they just want to make sure that you actually took the class. However, your math skills will be tested on the TEAS. 3) BSNs are preferred over ADNs in all hospitals. While I don't think hospitals will stop hiring ADNs in the near future, I do see almost all of them going the route of the INOVA Health System (making you sign an agreement that you will obtain your BSN within 3 years of employment). The NAS courses that you want to take are worthless outside of NVCC's ADN program. If you want your coursework to transfer to a BSN program, take BIO 141, 142, and 150 instead. 4) Take this with a grain of salt, but I'd hazard to guess that you have so far been treated with indifference at the MEC because, as of right now, no one is currently eligible to apply for the traditional program starting in Fall 2014. I am starting the Online Hybrid program in January and I could tell that, on the two occasions I went to the MEC, that the admissions advisors were swamped and overworked worrying about the upcoming online hybrid course. They'll be much more receptive to you once the admissions window opens for the program you want to apply to.

NVCC Online Hybrid RN Program, Spring 2014
I got my provisional acceptance by email last night. All I can say is that I am extremely thankful for this opportunity. Hey hanoi98, I have two more questions I hope you can answer: 1) Our orientation is December 11th. I was told that I would need to buy some sort of book/software package for the program on the day of orientation. Do you have any idea what this is and how much it costs? 2) In regards to the drug test: I'm currently on a prescribed medication that has shown up on previous work-related drug tests. For one drug test, I was asked for my prescription number right over the phone. For the other drug test, I had to have my physician call the testing company to verify my prescription. Would you happen to know if I'll have to go through the hassle of getting my physician to verify my prescription or if I'll just be able to give my prescription number over the phone? I know this is kind of strange and pedantic question, but my physician's office manager is extremely forgetful and it took ages for her to verify my prescription the last time. Thanks again for all of your guidance in this process. I'll definitely PM you after orientation. I hope we get the chance to meet and talk about our aspirations in the world of nursing.

NVCC Online Hybrid RN Program, Spring 2014
So, they moved the application deadline back two weeks (to just this past Friday). I received an email last night that my application had been received and processed. hanoi98, how long did it take you to get your email acceptance or rejection after you received this email?

Realistic profile of an accepted NVCC Online Hybrid RN Student?
Certified Background, but call the program for the background check code first. You can still pass the background check and have criminal convictions.

Realistic profile of an accepted NVCC Online Hybrid RN Student?
I just sent in my application for the upcoming online hybrid cohort. From my understanding, decisions will be made and sent out by November 8th. Should I get accepted into the program and have access to these statistics, I'll gladly share them with you.

Spring 2014 Nursing Hopefuls
I just sent in my application to NVCC's Online Hybrid Nursing program in Springfield, VA. I'll find out by November 8th whether or not I got in. I did extremely well in all of my pre-reqs and on the TEAS test so I'm very confident about my admissions chances. Best of luck to those waiting on admissions letters and congratulations to all of you who have been accepted!

Hey Hanoi98, thank you very much for the information. Assuming I am admitted, this is going to be a hectic, but awesome, 17 months!

Criminal Records and Nursing in Virginia
Hello all, I just wanted to give an update regarding my situation so that any worriers like myself who are applying to NVCC's ADN program have a reference of sorts. After talking to many people who were just as unsure about things as I was, I took the advice of one of the program's administrators and ordered a background check through the company that does the background checks and drug tests for all NVCC nursing students. While my convictions did show up on the criminal background report, this report undergoes a process called "extensive review," where the company checks your convictions with Virginia's "barrier crimes," or those crimes that absolutely bar you from VA BON licensure. Based off of this, you either pass or fail the background check. Since none of my crimes constituted a barrier crime, I passed the check. So, here's what you can take from this: you will be admitted to NVCC's nursing program if you pass this check, and I believe it's safe to assume that a pass also allows you entry into any of NVCC's clinical sites. HOWEVER, disclosure of your criminal history to VA's BON is a totally different story. From what I have gathered, all crimes must be disclosed to the VA BON. That being said, if you're honest about your past convictions and none of them are for barrier crimes, you'll have no problem getting through the VA BON.

Criminal Records and Nursing in Virginia
Hello all, I intend to apply Northern Virginia Community College's Online/Hybrid RN program in a week, and their literature contains a lot of conflicting information regarding criminal records. I have contacted the program but have yet to get a response for my situation. If anyone here could offer advice or help, I'd greatly appreciate it. Now, on to my situation: I have two misdemeanor convictions: one from 2007 (Driving on a Suspended License, amended to Driving with an Invalid License) and one from 2008 (Reckless Driving, doing 83 in a 65). Now, here's where things get a little tricky. NVCC states in some of their literature that they will categoricllay not admit anyone with a misdemeanor conviction, but then in other literature they say that they waive one alcohol-related offense if it was issued more than five years ago. Furthermore, their FAQs (http://www.nvcc.edu/campuses-and-centers/medical/academic-divisions/nursing/nursingprogramfaqs-rev031213.pdf) state the following: Now, it seems to me here that my convictions won't disqualify me from the program or from licensure, but that I may be denied entry into clinicals based on a hospital's policy regarding criminal convictions. For those familiar with NVCC's clinical affiliates, do you know any who frown upon the misdemeanors I mentioned? Again, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.

NVCC Online Hybrid RN Program, Spring 2014
Hello! This thread is for those of us who are applying for Spring 2014 entry into NVCC's online hybrid RN program. I know applications must be postmarked by October 18th in order to receive consideration. I've looked at past threads for hopeful students and it seems customary to post prereq. GPA and TEAS results, so I'll start: Prerequisites Completed: BIO 141, 142, 150, and CHM 101. Prereq. GPA: 4.0 Prerequisites in Progress: BIO 101 (coursework will be completed by October 5th) TEAS Scores: 97.6% in Reading, 100% in Math, 90% in Grammar The only thing I'm worried about at this moment is making sure that my BIO 101 grade posts by October 18th. My instructor is definitely in my corner in terms of making sure that I meet the application deadline, but my experience with ELI has been far from pleasant (the only certainty with ELI is that Murphy's Law always applies). And, if anyone who has been through this program is reading, I do have one question: is this program four truly consecutive semesters? That is to say, will it be Spring 2014, Summer 2014, Fall 2014, and Spring 2015? I know that they offer the two nursing classes required for the second semester (Maternal/Newborn Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing) in the summer (well, at least they did last summer). If this is the case, I am even more stoked to begin this program!
