When someone asks you what you do for a living, do you say "nurse" or "RN" or "LVN"?
I usually say "nurse". But then I do get the RN question. When I say yes, I do sometimes get the BSN question.

Would you commute an hour to a job you wanted?
I currently have a 40 minute commute and I hate it. That's because it is during rush hour in the metro Phoenix area. I am planning on moving closer to my job so I don't have to deal with the traffic :-)

Question from a third shift nurse....
I just resigned from a LTC facility where I was the RN for night shift. We had a constant battle with day shift about how many to get up. They wanted ALL the residents up by the time dayshift got there. So the residents were being woken up and dressed at like 3 am so that all 40 some residents could be up by 6. We finally got the DON to listen to night shift, and no one was to get up that early. Can you guess how long that lasted?? Then for the nurses, they tried to implement the 0800 med pass to be at 0500 for the night shift to do it. Uhh, what?? Most, if not all the residents get 10+ meds at 0800 and now you want them to get them at 0500 on an empty stomach with breakfast 2+ hours away? Hmm, yeah that makes sense. I somehow don't think that's going to fly.

Chamberlain College of Nursing
I am a CCN grad. While the school does have some issues (and I think that there are probably some issues at all schools), the hospitals in the area (Phoenix) love Chamberlain students and grads. The school does offer a good education despite its "reputation". The Phoenix campus is growing and since I graduated last year, have put in a brand new sim lab and area dedicated for CCN students. As for the schedule, yes they seem to take forever to give you your schedule, which was a pet peeve of mine. I guess just keep hounding them. Good luck to you in the program :-)

When did you find out you got the job?
In my SNF job I am in now, I got the job offer that same day. With the hospital job I just got, I had one interview with a tour and a second interview with the shift supervisors set up. I had to wait two weeks for the second interview, but was given the job offer directly after it. Now I am just waiting on the paperwork process :-)

Applying to 'no experience necessary' jobs and being rejected for lack of experience?
When I graduated with my BSN last October, I couldn't get a hospital job at all, even with 12 years of other healthcare experience. Yet all my classmates were getting them. It was frustrating. I took a job at a SNF, with both ltc and subacute rehab. I have now been there seven months. I have learned a great deal! All sorts of skills, time management, organization, etc. About a month ago, started applying to hospitals, and started getting interviews! Yay! I accepted a position with an acute rehabilitation hospital. So sure, SNF might not be ideal, but you learn a ton, and more than likely, hospitals will start looking at you more once you get that experience. Best of luck to you in your search.
