Interview Questions
Looking for some input please! In previous interviews for ER positions, staff from the ER sat in on the interview to ask questions of me along with the director of the ER. At my current job that does not happen and I plan to approach the director with this idea. But it has been a while for me and can't recall some of the questions that were posed to me. So I pose this to you. What are some questions you think should be asked by the staff in addition to the directors questions? If you have gone through this process, what questions were asked of you? Thanks!!!

ADN and BSN clinical requirements
I graduated with an ADN in 93. I don't know that we had more clinical hours than a BSN but I believe ADN students get started with clinicals earlier in the game. For me it was during second semester of the first year. If I can recall we started with two eight hour shifts. I did do a seven week preceptorship in the local ER (which is where I've been since) that had three eight hours shifts per week. I hope this helps! Rock on Hank

What the AHA thinks of the bill pending in Congress on mandatory OT
I visited the New Jersey Hospital Association website and found this article dated 3/12/01. I plan to do a search to find Joseph Vitale (D) email address so we can express our opinions just as NJHA has. Speak out! http://www.njha.com/html/dml.031201.html Here is the email address for the editor of the paper: Letters to the Editor: Send to Letters to the Editor, 1 Star-Ledger Plaza, Newark, N.J., 07102-1200. E-mail to [email protected] [This message has been edited by Speedy1RN (edited March 13, 2001).] Vitale's address: http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/html/vitale.htm [This message has been edited by Speedy1RN (edited March 13, 2001).]

What the AHA thinks of the bill pending in Congress on mandatory OT
Think there is a nursing shortage coming? Let mandatory overtime pass across the board and there will be a shortage now. Nurses who can afford to will quit, cut back hours or transfer to other facilities. I agree we must speak out together and fight for our rights to prevent such a possibility. Interesting that the article appears to say that yeah nurses are important but the patient is paramount. To a degree, yes. BUT, if you don't take care of yourself, how can you take care of others. We all know of the problems surrounding nursing but I'll throw this out there. (For married people) A study released that marriages suffer when a spouse works more than forty hours in a week. Do you think the people pushing this type of legislation think about this aspect? Speak out and speak often! [This message has been edited by Speedy1RN (edited March 12, 2001).]

Unfortunately, in the past our responses have been edited. Therefore, formal written responses to any standards interpretation question will have to be provided in a letter mailed to you at your organization or faxed back to your organization at the fax number provided. Thank you for your cooperation with these procedures. Jacho has some articles on their website about pain management if you do a search for pain. They are vague in nature in that studies are underway or have been done. I agree that pain management is important. It is very subjective on our part and unless we are in the patient shoes, how do we know without asking. Speaking from an ER standpoint, most people come to us in pain and want relief. HOWEVER There is a portion of our population that abuse the system. Drug seekers in particular. I had a patient change the refill number on a prescription and tried to fill it. I now chart how many refills we wrote to cover my self and the doc. I could sit here and write all kinds of situations, but you too know of stories. I would hope Jacho addresses this more. We should be allowed to keep a record of repeat offenders of narcotics and pain medicine. Hey, if sex offenders are posted on websites, let's post drug seekers on the website. May be a bit extreme... Your thoughts.

Just another way Jacho makes life miserable. Here is the link: http://www.activedayton.com/partners/ddn/local/1226lesspain.html I have written to Jacho to get their official standard and will comment later. My concern as an ER nurse deals with repeat drug seekers not the legit patient who needs pain control.

Jacho.. making our lives miserable
I have never been a fan of Jacho (as I like to call them.) I ran across an article today and I could not be silent. Here is the link: http://www.activedayton.com/partners/ddn/local/1226lesspain.html I have written to Jacho to get their official word on this, and when I do, will come back with my complaint before I fly off the handle. I work as an ER nurse and my concern deals with the drug seekers.
