  1. For all you lovely nurses that like to stay in shape when you're not working. What are some good work out songs you listen to? I've recently decided to get fit and healthy and my iPod is lacking looking for any suggestions! Thanks In Advance!
  2. Hello! I'm a new nurse and have little experience when it comes to this slippery slope in nursing. I am wondering.... is it ok to tell a white lie for the comfort of the patient?? Say they are extremely confused, have a short term memory of about 5 minutes and continuously come to the nursing station asking for their mother and father (but they are 90 years old obviously their parents are no longer with us). I had a bad experience when I was a student in first year. The ethics class told me to never lie so when a patient came to me and asked where he mother was I told her she was no longer alive- lets just say that did not end well. I have read many research articles for and against this and was just looking for some real life experiences in dealing with situations like these! TIA
  3. If you are taking micro for nursing at York ..... Best of luck to you be prepared to self teach the entire course - currently taking it as we speak... It's a nightmare !
  4. I passed as well! I live out in the boonies about 1.5-2 hours north of Toronto so it took awhile for the results! Congrats to all successful applicants !
  5. I'm in ON and no mail yet!
  6. In Canada too, I've never been drug tested in my life .
  7. This is also not for the nclex. I am a Canadian New grad just following an online Facebook group that posts questions daily and this one had me confused :|
  8. So the facebook group moderator posted the answer as A - with no rationale . I hope it was a typo
  9. Ahhhhaa....Blood cultures! I knew I was missing something with my thinking process thanks !

    Thank you !
  11. This is NOT a homework question...I follow a few facebook groups ran by nurses helping students prepare for their registration exams and one posted this question and have not posted the answer and it has me scratching my head... I'm torn between A,B or D....I personally have not came across this yet. I am a new grad and I was wondering what experiences nurses would do in this situation: Mrs. Stewart has developed pneumonia, and her temperature is 38.6ºC (101F). Mrs. Stewart is shivering and "feels distressed and uncomfortable." Which one of the following actions should the nurse take? a. Increase oral fluid consumption to 3 L per day. b. Provide extra blankets. c. Wrap the axilla and groin. d. Notify the physician. I thought A to liquefy lung secretions, decrease body temp and make up for insensible water loss rt fever. BUT I have a feeling 3L is a bit much, I could be wrong? I also know that dropping a temp too quickly can cause a rebound, spiking the fever higher. B- more therapeutic than anything. But I was always taught to never put more blankets on a febrile pt. D- My least favourite choice, but could it be right? I gather from this question that she's been diagnosed and the doctor obviously knows. Pneumonia, has a febrile stage... and I feel something should be done prior to calling an MD... Thoughts?

For those that have access to this program and have taken the nclex... how similar is the presentation of questions on the nclex and is it comparable to the level of questions on the actual nclex? I'm a Canadian BSN student and we are writing the NCLEX come the year I graduate and were given free access to PrepU, so far it seems ok.... just wanted some input of people that have actually used this program to prepare! Thanks in advance!
  13. In my experience 3-11 is the worst shift in the world.... It's ok of you are working a mixture of hours but 3-11 straight you really feel it. I felt like all I was doing was sleeping and preparing to go to work. I couldn't get anything done .
  14. Where to start . . . . LTC care facility.... Getting a 95 year old woman dressed for the day (I was new to the unit and not familiar with the Residents quite yet)... She had a lt mastectomy and was supposed to have a prosthetic breast. Well, she emptied her dresser and said to me..."Well, that got ********* down the hall must have stolen it"... I said "stolen what?" and she said "My ****** TIT!"... Imagine my confusion and terror not knowing she had a prosthetic breast LOL. A severely demented man, that recently had a stroke kept coming out to me at the nurses station with a duvet. I asked what he wanted and told me I had to come with him. I got to his semi-private room (LTC) and he said to me "Just cover up that right now I cant bare to look at it"... I said cover what up....Apparently his roommate was a squirrel, having intercourse with his wife. and..... I had one resident call me over and whisper to me "You've got to get me to this hospital right now"... I asked why and he said "I've got the hemorrhoids and ooh do they ever bite... I had to quit horseback riding today".... funny thing, the resident had polio at some point and was paralyzed for years. Last one I promise......As a nursing student my girlfriend and I were changing a colostomy- was the patients first time... We removed the bag and cleaned the stoma all nice and proper..... Next thing I know my girlfriend says something that makes the patient laugh... well sure enough the increase of inter abdominal pressure sends liquid feces across the room basically and it hit the wall. My girlfriend and I were so shocked and embarrassed that we just started to laugh...... The patient goes "What you girls scared of a little bit of ****"... She proceeded to laugh more and more liquid oozed out..... That was too much fun!
  15. I'm starting my 3rd year (collab degree with Georgian-York). I was just wondering if there are any York graduates out there (past couple of years). Did you find that York prepared you well to write your registration exam? Did it take you long to find positions as nurses? Also, I am curious to know if you have put to use all your nursing theory: Watson, Z&P, Porifice (I know York is one of the schools that goes very deep into nursing theory). Do you think it took away from time you could have spent learning more skills? Many people complain that the theory is wasting their time and they should focus more on the skills. I am pretty on the fence, I'm not so sure how I feel about all the theory as I have not actually practiced as a BScN yet! So I would like to hear your opinions :) Thank-you in advance :)
  16. Assuming things gets you no where and you are making a fool of yourself. It's great you are so passionate about this and trying to help people out but you are talking a big game with not a lot of information to back you up. Stating "I got lucky and probably graduated at a time when...." HA HA... I have not even graduated my BScN, up until 3 months ago I was working as a PSW in a LONG TERM CARE FACILITY AND A HOSPITAL both part-time.... Out of the 150 people in my program you can bet half are working as PSWs right here in ONTARIO at this moment. I wouldn't call that 'luck'. I respect PSWs 100% I learned a lot from working with them however.....I was told this to my face from an interviewer- "You are more qualified than a PSW, we love hiring nursing students". Until they are regulated its up to institutional preference if there is a mandatory certificate required. Please stop assuming you know everything when clearly you are looking at this through a very narrow tunnel and are spewing information that is misinformed.
  17. In Ontario you need a PSW Certificate inorder to even be considered for a PSW job at a hospital or long term care facility. PSW at hospitals and Nursing homes work along side Nurses doing bedside care. Im a registered RPN so i work with many PSW at the Nursing home. I am briding to BSCN in the fall and i am just trying to help students out. I understand that not everyone will agree with what im saying but in Ontario it really is the best option. This information is 100% false.....I NEVER took the PSW course, nor do I have a certificate, but, after my first year of my BScN I was able to work as a PSW (said so on my name tag) in a long-term care facility AND and hospital. Until PSWs are regulated health care professionals, anyone can take some kind of non-accrediated or college programs and pass themselves off. Mind you, institutions may make it their own stipulation that they will only hire PSWs whom have a certificate it is NOT mandatory. Also, the reason I chose to take pre-health and not the PSW program was because in high school, I thought I wanted to be a lawyer and avoided all sciences and only took math until grade 11. The PSW certificate DOESNT give you the pre-reqs to get into the nursing programs the most it offers is Biology. Prehealth gave me 2 biology, 2 chem, math, english and physics. Why didn't I do night school? to each their own..... I wanted to get all my core pre-res out of the way and with prehealth this allowed me to do it much faster. I need structure which I found night school didn't have. I think you need to do a little more research on requirements. Taking the PSW course WILL NOT get you into the BScN course or the RPN course if you didn't take any courses in high school (with good grades) that are required to even apply.
  18. You need to convert mg to mcg or vice versa. Then you need to use your formula to figure out the rest.
  19. If its a matter of being interrupted.... My institution has a policy that visitors and other staff are not allowed to interrupt nurses who are doing med passes unless its an emergency. We have a sign we put up on the med cart that basically says do not disturb and we have a pad of paper on our med carts that other staff and write on for us to see after our med pass.... We also use eMAR and I find this has been extremely beneficial in allowing me to stay organized, manage my time and check check check before I walk off to administer!
  20. got it thanks a million!
