  1. Thank you for clarifying this! Is there anyway to close this discussion?
  2. Ahh understood, thank you!
  3. I noticed many of my respondents are female. I'd also like to get a guy's take on the toxic work environment. How does it affect male employees?
  4. Hi! Thanks for the input! I actually pasted the link but it looks like somehow the questions transferred over to the post which wasn't my intention. It's a mistake on my end so I'm trying to figure out how to edit my previous post in order to share the link instead.
  5. Hi please delete if this isn't allowed, I'm currently doing a research paper that tackles toxic work environments. The purpose of this research is to find out how toxic environments continue to plague to workplace and I hope to find a solution to either prevent them from happening or resolve them effectively. If you have some free time please take my survey as it's anonymous and should take less than 5 min. Thank you!! 6. Thank you so much for your input! I will keep that in mind if the discussion comes up again. I was asked for my availability for this particular location. As far as the details of the visit, I wasn't able to clarify that with my DON since I declined after learning about the distance of the visit. The city is definitely out of our area. I assumed the need was from a different regional office.
  7. I was called to go to a city that's 3 and a half hours away. However, I declined because I told my DON I felt that it was too far. Is it reasonable to decline services due to distance?? Will I be viewed in a negative light from my DON or administrator for declining? I love my job and I know much of our time as outpatient hospice nurses is spent on driving but the maximum I've driven one way to a destination is an hour and a half and I thought 3+ hours was too far.. My assumption is that another hospice was short on nurses. What are your thoughts?
  8. Thank you so much for the input everyone!! This was so unusual for me since I just started work and now I'm sitting on the sidelines. Wow two nights a month!? I definitely came at a wrong time too since medicare isn't allowing aftt, dementia, and debility as primary diagnoses. So im sure that's contributing alot to our low census. I call every week to see if there's an opening for me and each time there isn't, it's been a bummer. However I definitely plan on staying since I love the atmosphere of our workplace. I wasn't looking forward to the thought of going through another job hunt but looks like that's gonna be the case to occupy the extra time I have! LYNDAA nope not when it's too many days of being off! Although it'll probably be a good thing down the line
  9. I love my job but I'm working as an LPN PRN for a hospice agency and have not worked for two weeks including this week due to low census. This is my first job. Is this sort of thing common? What would you do in this situation?
  10. While I was waiting for my license to process here in South Carolina, I volunteered for hospice! I remember at the time they weren't hiring LPNs. One of the nurses suggested to even get experience before going into hospice. Once my licensed was processed I stopped volunteering because I wanted to start finding work. As soon as an opening came up they contacted me and urged me to apply and that's how I started working for them! No experience and I had a 3 week orientation.
  11. South Carolina Hospice LPN, first job 17/hr PRN typical hours 8:30-5 0.50/mileage No on-call No benefits
  12. Personally I think it's a great idea to volunteer! While I was waiting for my LPN license to process I volunteered for a hospice agency. I got to know the nurses there and got to visit different facilities in my area that I didn't know about! Some I learned were hiring too! It also kept me motivated about nursing being around patients and other nurses as opposed to doing nothing while waiting. Even though much of the time you're keeping patients company, I was still able to utilize my assessment skills. Because if there was anything wrong with the patient I was visiting, I could relay that information to the nurse. We also documented our visit. While I was volunteering, they weren't hiring LPNs at the time, but after a few months, they contacted me about an open position for an LPN and I jumped on it! I now work for them and I love my job! This is when I realized how much connections do matter. However, I noticed you're just starting school. Perhaps you can volunteer before you start school to establish familiarity with the staff and see what it's like.
