So confused about SOC?
Hi I am totally new to home care, had 3 day orientation. I do mostly weekends and lots of SOC's. My question is besides filling out all the paperwork and charting, how do I get the orders? If I recommend the pt needs PT and OT eval, we have a special paper that we fill out and leave for the office staff who puts in in the computer. But Im still confused if this is right. Do I call the doctor? Some pts have a million doctors, which one to call? Im confused about the whole thing, I can't even look up lab results which I drew a week ago, don't know where my actual orders are. Help! Can someone please explain this stuff to me? Thanks

What do you do if a patient needs to go to the hospital?
Im new to home health. Visited a pt that was clearly sick, exacerbation of his renal problems and chf. He couldn't breathe. I told the family that he is very sick and he should go to the hospital. I offered to call 911 for them, they told me they want some alone time to ask the patient what he wants. I didn't call the doctor b/c my preceptor told me he would say the same thing to me, to send him to hospital. Anyway, I charted in my notes that I advised family to take him to ER immediately and offered to call 911. Is this what you normally do in home health, should I have stayed with the family and called 911? Thanks

Has Nursing Made You a Homebody?
I never had a social life in my life so I wouldn't know, never had a boyfriend. Nursing has made me more bitter lol

How Many Licenses do you Have?
I have 3 licenses, NJ, PA and KY I think KY is a compact state but I had to pay for each individually, NJ took the most money from me because I let the license lapse for a year and I had to pay a penalty. I think its big business that every year you have to pay for your license, why can't it be a one time deal?

Nervous about starting IV's help
I'm kind of nervous bc Im gonna start a job in home health and will likely start a lot of IV's or do blood work, I don't know why but sticking people with needles makes me nervous b/c I feel I am hurting them and I'm terrible at IV sticks. My problem is sometimes I can hardy see the vein and when I stick them where I think the vein is, I don't get any blood return. Some nurses tell me that I'm under the vein, some say to pull back a little, I really have a hard time knowing where I am and this makes me nervous. Any advice? Thanks

Is it a mistake if I take a year and a half off?
I worked on an LTAC floor for 2 years as an RN, it was my first RN job. I've quit that job b/c eventually want to get onto a tele/med surg floor would like to leave long term care. Im now sitting at home working on my BSN, if goes well should get it in 1.5 years. I've been unsuccessful applying for even a nursing home or home health job in my area. Should I just stay home for 1.5 years and work on my BSN in hopes I will be more marketable in the future? Thanks

Burned....
May I ask what unit you work on? Dayshift? That happens once in a while I've been there before, it shouldn't happen everyday.

Moved back home now thinking of moving out again
I just moved back home in Jan from another state, had a wonderful job on an ltac floor, learned a lot, worked there for 2 years exactly I was excited to move back home to NJ and even had a job lined up on a tele floor. Moving wasn't easy for me since I was alone but I did it. I started my new job in NJ and was told by my supervisor after 2 months she has to let me go, she said it was due to an error on my part but then she stated she could tell I am depressed and she has to let me go. Never had somebody tell me that before. And I admit I made a few errors but I was still in orientation and every week I kept getting written up for things such as does not communicate effectively to dr's , goes on break too early, did not answer one call light...ect. It was things that I could have improved on but definitely not be fire for. I am now broke, can't even find a job in a nursing here here in nj. Tried home health, hospice, nursing homes..ect they all turn me down bc I never worked in that setting before. I'm miserable and thinking of moving out of state again and begging for my old job to take me back. I started working on my bsn here in nj but feel it will be no good if I go to school for 1 year and not work. I am losing my experience and have no money Should I stay here and get my bsn but probably be out of work for at least a year? Thanks
