Question for you experts
I have been a nurse for just over a year. I spent about 9 months working at a walk-in clinic and also this whole time at a acute in-patient psych unit. I would like to get back into medical and have always wanted to do ED. My question is this, how do I now if I am capable enough? I obviously don't utilize the same nursing skills in psych as I would in ED. I am also terrifed that they will think that I am dumb and our ED already hates our psych unit. On the rare occasion that we do get some medical I feel that I am compitent, I also feel that I am new enough that I haven't forgotten everything from school yet. I really need a change I love what I do But I am so bored. I work every shift under the sun and can no longer handle that. i don't care what shift I really work I only want to work 1. I personally feel that I do well in stressful situations, and quite frankly I prefer them. I am so confused. I also have heard the old stereotype that ED staff is egotistical and I am not, in fact I am on the insecure side. What do you think?

Which degree to get?
I currently work in a inpatient mental health unit. i have worked here for a year right out of school. I absolutely love it, however I would like to get my bachelors degree. I can't decide what is best, here are my three options a BSN, a BA in psychology, or a BA in healthcare management. I do like the other areas of nursing such as the medical stuff but psych is my passion. On the other hand I wouldn't mind going into the management aspect, but if I had a BSn I could work anywhere. Also, I have been researching online programs does anyone recommend any? What am I to do???

opinions of young people as nurses
I too have been treated less than ideal because of my age. I am a New RN on a psych unit, I am 24, and I am getting treated like a child, they seem to feel as though they should mother me or something. I believe that I present myself in a mature way. I am also the only new grad they have ever hired and the next age from mine is at least 25 years my senior. They all have good senses of humor and are fairly easy to get along with but it still bothers me that I will never get the respect that I deserve. One nurse even said "there are no kids on this unit except for 'me' ".

stethoscopes, too heavy?
I too recieved the Littmann cardiology III for Xmas and it is the best stethoscope I've ever used. My husband bought it for me and found it on the internet for much cheaper than retail. I also thought it was sticky it really bothered my skin. i know that at some uniform shops sell a stocking that goes over it but I just used some of that stockinete stuff you put over someones arm or leg it works just as good.

Mistake with new job?
Here's my issue in a nutshell, when I was in school I had an "internship" at a LTC, i made a med error and was fired. No harm came to the patient and I admitted full responcibility for my mistake. I had asked my then supervisor what I should do, how I would get a new job? She stated that i didn't have to put the facility on my resume, so I didn't. Well, now I've been hired at a new job, and they think that I've been off work for the past few months because of school, partially true. I am so afraid that my new employer will find out and I will lose my new job. i have asked so many people what to do and they all say that because the former employer told me not to put in on my resume that I'm covered. HELP!

Too Many Crabby Nurses!!
I understand where you are coming from. I am a recent grad, may 2005, and dealt with the same exact situations where we did clinicals. It got to the point where they were so intimidating that I had a hard time doing my work, it's not like I am going to be a ***** back so I just reverted into my shell for safety. looking back that may not have been the best idea but it was my first reaction. i think alot of those crabby nurses are underappreciated and always called on there misgiving and never the things they may be doing right. I think we will all have bad days and be crabby but we all have to keep in mind that we don't have to take these people home with us so it is not worth getting riled up over. My advice would be take it with a grain of salt and don't let it affect you and your performance. Good Luck :)

Medication error
I did look at the picture and I also said the wrong persons name to the client( although some don't recognize their name) the time wasn't the issue, it was the wrong person, I looked at the picture and saw this other client.

Medication error
This is terribly embarressing and I am so ashamed to have made such stupid mistakes. I am a nursing student about to graduate and "was" working in a long term care facility under an internship. I have worked there for 3 months. today I gave the wrong person someone else's meds, and they were extensive. However this was not the first time awhile back I misread the time on the mar and gave someone their coumadin twice. Pretty dumb huh? My question is, am I just to dumb to be a nurse? This is the ONLY thing I have ever wanted to do in my life, be a nurse. How could I have made such stupid errors and to get fired right before I graduate. I need advice on how to improve myself and how I will ever work again.
