How do you cope with the death of a patient?
Sure, I'd be happy to.

How do you cope with the death of a patient?
jhawkgirl you will not get through it on your own. on our unit we have a group of staff that come along side our other staff and provide them support. we call one another and talk. we are very intentional in what we do. the best is having someone who truly knows how you feel to say "i know how you feel"

Why "male nurses" instead of "men in nursing"?
Come on guys we work in a predominatly female profession quit trying to be what you are not (female), we will not change the culture in our lifetime. Think of all the others they have renamed to be gender specific: femailman, fefireman, fepoliceman, febossman, the supposed female senator from New York, former female Floridian Attornety General, and don"t forget Micheal Jackson who has given a whole new meaning to weirdo. Be thankful we have that distinction of being male nurses (even our gay counterparts). for those of you with vasectomys do they call you "neuter" nurse?

Guys in the NICU
Never actually seen a guy try to breast feed a baby. :chuckle Remember to ask for help with the hands on stuff ie get a co-worker to do it for you. you will still need to be able to provide information in the form of teaching so know that stuff. stay away from helping with the breast pump also. remember you are the only guy with alot of women they aren,t afraid to ask you to help them. Sometimes you will have mothers (your wife)who don,t mind your presence when they are feeding but be sure to ask if its okay.

Roll Call
A few things that keep us apart from our female cohort. 1. being male 2. love of tools 3. ability to harm ourselves in amazing ways with any combo of 1 and 2

Why "male nurses" instead of "men in nursing"?
I prefer male nurse it sounds more macho.

Guys in the NICU
I,ve worked NICU 15 years still not able to connect with the breast feeding routine, fortunatley I have alot of co-workers that are willing to help. Most every thing else is great, not alot of heavy lifting unless you include moving rocking chairs.

Nurses who Hunt and Fish
My favorite is the BWCA. I go with my brothers and co-workers so when they return from the trip they can say the camped with nurses.
