  1. When I went to the hospital program...1985...the RN program was at that time 6 months longer....including their psyche, math, labs, and all their things they needed for the COMPLETE program. The RN students went from Sept- May for 2 years. Summers off. 18 months total. We, too had psyche, labs, A&P...no micro, though...I do know some people who have attended LPN programs that included micro, and actually needed college pre-req.'s. And, yes, we can function in the supervisory capacity. In Maryland, I was a unit manager, and knew Quality Assurance nurses that were LPN's. There are also LPN's that are DON's in the LTC facilities. It depends which state you practice in as to what you are allowed to do, and this also varies from facility to facility. My point about the foley was, yes, many things can be learned on the job, but to understand the complications, be skilled and smooth when you are taking care of a real patient and be comfortable, which comes with practice is key in GOOD PATIENT CARE
  2. My LPN program was 12 full months, no breaks. The same hospital had an RN program (ADN) that was only 6 months longer than ours, and we had more clinical hours. They went 9 months Sept-May x two yrs. We also had to perform each procedure during our internship 3 times before we could pass and take our boards. There were some 4 year BSN students who, in their 3rd year never had even inserted a foley!! I have been a nurse for 19 yrs. now and still some hospitals don't want to take an app from me. I have had critical care, peds, management, and all types of experience, but this doesn't seem to matter.
  3. I agree!!! I also wonder how that hospice has gotten away with letting him bully them into abusing her. Some patient care such as mouth care, stimulation, etc. are basic standards of care. Also, just to let you know, I am Catholic, and it isn't against our religion to cremate, but her parents want a Mass of Christian burial and he won't allow it. Great comments!!
  4. All together now...Say... POWER TRIP I think its safe to say we don't need much "proof" that he has another woman and two kids. Adultery is considered abandonment. How would Terri feel about that??
  5. Hey Tony!! Sounds like either she was having a bad day or was, as you said just condescending...maybe insecure, jealous???. As an LPN I have had some pretty nasty comments from some RN's. Even reading articles about nursing; seems as though LPN's aren't part of the health care team. I personally have had loads of experience in my 19 years, and have actually oriented RN's at times. We're kinda like the 'clean canvas' of nursing. The facilities do with us what they want based on what the nurse practice act allows us, which is a lot!! Sometimes this is confusing. What you can do in facilityA isn't what you can do across the street in facility B. I, too believe that patient care is the core of nursing and was taught (hospital school) that NO job was beneath us. I have had CNA's ask if I was ever a CNA beacuse I "knew how to clean up and turn a patient"!!! By the way, congratulations on your up coming degree and career!! (Talk about paying your dues!!!) Good luck to you!! Any time you need to "vent" we're here and probably had some similar experience!!
