DSchulte99, I am thinking that may be the only way it could be done. Have you ever heard of lateral transfers from line officers to nurse corps officers?

bfrei, I have not received any TA and the Navy hasn't paid for anything. I commissioned through OCS and have a masters degree (in a non-medical field). I specifically would like to become a nurse though have been open to other fields in the past. Would you mind sending me a private message with a way I can contact you to possibly get into more detail? I would send one to you but have not hit my minimum post requirement yet.

Hello everyone, I am currently an officer in the Navy. To be specific, I am a line officer in a field that has nothing to do with nursing/medicine in any way for my career. I am however interested in becoming a nurse and looking at various second-degree BSN programs. What I am wondering is, if I wanted to stay Navy, is there a way that I can transfer to the Nurse Corps and have the Navy send me to school? If not, is there any reasonable way one could get their RN and remain on active duty (considering deployments, etc.), or is it best to get out and go to school full time on the GI Bill? If anyone has any suggestions as to what would be the best way to go about this, or have any ideas I did not think of, I am open to hear them! Thanks!

If you are not taking summer classes toward your major, why not? It would only make you a more well-rounded student in your nursing program and it is a good skill to have in life. EMT-B can definitely be done in a summer, though paramedic would require full time study of several months.

Also, with 7 years on the job, your background will bring a diverse/different prospective wherever you go and that would benefit you and those around you.

I say go for it! I am not in the medical field myself, but am also considering making the big switch!

This post is directed probably toward Navyman, or really anyone in the USN. Have you seen or even heard of commissioned officers in the navy (line officers) conducting a lateral transfer to the nurse corps? And if so, did they have their RN/BSN first or was there ever a case you know of that the Navy put them through a second degree BSN program, etc.?

I know that in the north-east, Fairfield U's nursing program has a good name and I know a few current RNs that went through the traditional program. I would only assume that the quality of education would follow to their second-degree program.
