  1. Thanks for sharing - great article!
  2. Do the ASN. I was in your same position except I had a newborn. DH and I paid for the education on cash and 6 months into my first job my paychecks covered my degree. I got a fantastic education (PGCC) and have employer funded options to pursue a higher degree. Yes, it will take longer, but we have no debt, which means many things including I can make job decisions based on other factors than just money. I also feel that you get out what you put into it. I busted my ass and tool advantage of every opportunity for extra education and networking. Excuse my typos, I have a sleeping baby on me- typing with my thumb.

I can only say that it feels right when you know. At least that's how it worked for me. I was doing a clinical rotation in an ER as part of my EMT-B cert. All it took was an overnight shift, and I was hooked. I never worked as an EMT as I spent all my time and energy pursuing a nursing degree. It took years, but I finally made it "home" to an ER. I'm on maternity leave now, and I am so happy to be home with my children but I'd be lying if I didn't say that I miss my job and coworkers. Not many people say that about their jobs.

In my head I wonder about insurance- esp when mom brings in her 7 yo son at 0300. cc? Leg pain. Well, at dinner, son sat on his legs, felt numb and tingly, then hurt ( ummm they fell asleep?!?) So 10 hrs later, he's in my ER, playing a video game, watching cartoons, happy as a clam, and in NO PAIN when asked. Mom brought him in, just because. So yeah, in my head I'm thinking a) what kind of parent drags their perfectly fine kid to the ER in the middle of the night b) damn you must have great insurance!
