Why Do Nurses Eat Their Own?

I decided, after getting into the nursing program at Chaffey college, and seeing the kind of drama I would have to deal with in a predominantly female job, that I wasn't going to put up with it. So I decided to do something else. My first profession was law enforcement, and I personally think that keeping my head on a swivel to keep from getting shot is far less stressful that putting up with a bunch of snippy women who back stab their own to move up the ladder. Lesson learned

10 Reasons I Don't Always Love My Job

Interesting article, but sadly, I won't experience nursing to that extent. I decided I just don't want to deal with the politics, emotions, and all around drama that I experienced in the first year of nursing school. I don't have an issue dealing with patients, they're just people with physical problems that need to be fixed. The real problem in nursing is dealing with peers and superiors that expect you to choose sides, or have their own personal issues because of personality conflicts with you. I am who I am, and if that bothers you, too bad. On the positive side, I've spent my free time building my AR-15, and I go to the range and enjoy the zen like solice it provides me. The Nursing "profession" can keep the politics, emotions, and drama, and I'll go to the range.

Chaffey College Nursing Program( Rancho Cucamonga)

Do you like being brow beat ? How about belittled ? Do you thrive on being reminded that your mistakes could cost an instructor their license if you make a mistake ? Do you like being treated like a child, being reminded that you don't know anything but being hammered as if you're an experienced nurse ? If you said yes, then Chaffey college is for you. Those of you that have been exposed to the arrogance of the Chaffey nursing faculty, how are you liking that now ? Just a heads up for anyone that has applied to programs other than Chaffey, reconsider choosing another school, especially if you're an older adult. I thought that I was just being paranoid until a younger student as well as older students made the observation that the faculty hammers older students with the intent of getting rid of them. Here's an inside tip, contrary to what you've heard, the Chaffey college program isn't that great. In fact, Chaffey students are advising others that want to get into nursing to choose other schools. Chaffey says that they are comparable to a BSN. Well, why get a fake one when you can spend the same amount of years and get a REAL one ? In all seriousness ladies and gentleman, if you haven't started or have a choice between Chaffey and another school, choose the other school. Trust me when I say, I walked away with the intent of going somewhere else. I had it with their BS. I went there to learn, not put up with the garbage they dish out. If you choose to go to Chaffey, you have only yourself to blame when you wish that you would have gone somewhere else. You've been warned.

Need some advice - Mt. San Antonio College nursing program

Already have a number from the late 70's. Took some law enforcement courses between times in service while I waited to see if positions were going to open in '77. LE jobs were frozen so I joined the Army and was a military policeman until '81 then spent 20 years in law eforcement after that. Anyway, that's ancient history, I'm getting pumped to get it done at Sac once again. Since I live just down the road from SACH, I think I might be inclined to go there. Of course I'm very familiar with QVH. Worked there as security after the USAF and while I went to school. BTW, thanks for the PDF, that's good information.

I'm thinking I should start by taking all of my transcripts to a counselor. Do they have counselors that specifically focus on the ADN program ? Once I get an Idea what I'm working with, the next step is to make sure I have all of the necessary prerequisites. Do they give military veterans priority status ? Sorry, but I'll take whatever advantage I can get. This is important to me because I want to work for the VA. I'm just disappointed that the school with the best reputation wasn't a good fit for me. But I do understand how they got their reputation even if I don't like their methods.

I already bailed. I got tired of the negative reinforcement. I want to go somewhere where I can actually learn without feeling like I'm being dogged. I have a lot of life experiences and I was doing vital signs before my instructors went into nursing. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they know their jobs but I refuse to be treated like I'm some green teen with no life experiences. If being hammered for making mistakes with an instructor present is the norm, I think I'll just go quietly into retirement and forget about it.

Thank you for that. That tells me a lot. I feel I made an incredible mistake by not doing a little research before applying. I don't particularly like the snobbery that faculty display at Chaffey, and I think my personality and the personalities of the faculty clash. I'm not particularly stoic when I study. One instructor even accused me of being flipant and not serious. Having been in the military, and a career police officer, as well as a field training officer, I believe levity and a light atmosphere makes for a better learning environment. I also have issues with being removed from clinicals because of making a mistake that was corrected by the instructor that was present. Would a Mt Sac instructor do that ? If I may ask, where do you do your clinicals ? My mom has to go to DaVita for dialysis and she said 2nd sememster students were at the Upland facility yesterday. The hospitals Chaffey students go to are Pomona Valley, San Antonio, Kaiser Fontana, and Arrowhead Regional. For Psych., we either go to Arrowhead or Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Here's the deal with the first semester instructors. The material is simply overwhelming, even for an "A" student. Pile on top of that the daily and unforeseen things and it becomes daunting. Add to that work, and you have nearly impossible. But do they care ? Nope ! It's their way or the highway. As I told one of them, I get more simpathy from the people who pay me than I get from those I pay to educate me. To date my grades are fine, but I've literally become sick from the fatigue of working, doing the necessary chores that need to be done at home, dealing with the assignments that are given, the extra credit assignments we're given, the two day deadlines for careplans, and 10 hours in clinicals. Here's an example of the upcoming weekend for me. Clincals were 10 hours, the care plan requires taking information on a patient obtained during clincals and putting H&P, labs, meds, and chief complaint, into the appropriate cluster. On top of that we are required to do 5 NANDAs, and 2 workups on the patient. We also need to write up a paper on a specific test, and read 7 chapters from three different books. The care plan and report are due at noon on Sunday, but I work 8 hours on Saturday. I also work on Monday which is the only day I have off from school. Tuesday we learn a new skill that we will get checked off on a week later, and Wednesday, we have an exam on material we learned a week earlier, and then lecture. Sorry, but I went into the week to illustrate my point. There is lab time but that cuts into study time. Does that in anyway resemble a typical week at Mt Sac ?

The faculty at Chaffey makes Mt Sac the butt of their jokes and I find that rather arrogant when you consider that we all have to take the same N-CLEX to get licensed. Because of their attitudes I'm considering dropping the Chaffey program and going to Sac. So can you give me more information so that I can get a better handle on Mt Sac ?

Still unemployed in San Diego :(

At what point did I bad mouth the VA ? I am a patient at the VA and my primary care physician works at Loma Linda University and the Loma Linda VA. You certainly misread my post.

Hey Alley, check this out. https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/352175800 The only drawback is that hours aren't guaranteed. But it does say that yearly salary is between 64 and 115 THOUSAND dollars a year. So go for it, and when you put your time in, get transferred back to San Diego when there's an opening.

Okay, but there's more than one VA. For instance, I go to the Loma Linda VA and I've been told that they are understaffed. They even have a recruiting page and I have been told by people there that they do have a new grad program. So you may want to put the "total BS" sign away since it's obvious you don't have a clue what you're talking about. I'm done.

Think about working for the VA. They are constantly understaffed.

Chaffey College ADN Program Spring 2012

This thread is over a year old but that's okay. Bottom line is, if I knew then what I know now, there is no way that I would consider applying to Chaffey College for the ADN program. The arrogance and elitist attitude of some of the faculty is outrageous. This is just my opinion, but I think some actually believe they are doing you a favor by "allowing" you to remain in the course. I understand that other ADN courses have far less stress. The common denimator between Chaffey and other ADN programs is that a person will pass the N-CLEX in other schools but with less stress. I've dealt with other professions where reputation was the priority, and Chaffey has fallen into that trap. Don't get me wrong, if a student is struggling, they will remediate them, but weeding people out to maintain their reputation seems to be their agenda and not correcting the issues of the struggling student. The other answer of course is to suggest that the student may want to go to another school. Reading between the lines, that means to them, a "lesser" school, like Mt Sac. I'm quickly losing interest, and this post is simply my frustration with my choice of school, and the must maintain our reputation overall attitude of some of the faculty. If I didn't have so much time invested in this program so far, I think I would have quit and applied to Mt. Sac. Ok, rantting off.

It's just like that and the only way it would stop is if people refused to go to chaffey. But they will keep coming because of chaffey's rep.

    Chaffey College ADN Program

Just finished reading a thread about the ADN program at Chaffey college in So Cal. I am currently in their program so I want to give to you what I didn't have going into the program. 1. First and foremost, stay below the radar. Don't give them any reason to single you out. If you do, it will be nothing but miserable from that point forward. 2. If you find yourself the focus of their attention, do everything you can to get the attention off of you. That's all I have to say about that. 3. Remediation. If you remediate anything, regardless of what they say, it will HURT you. They have said to students that remediate, "That's okay, it will just make you a better nurse." BS ! Whatever you do avoid remediating anything. 4. MATH TEST ! They give a math test that you must pass with 100%. The best thing to do if you're serious about Chaffey College is get Dimensional Analysis down cold. You will absolutely need it for calculating dosages. Here's something to help you. Copy this and learn it. 1.8 x C + 32 = F and (F - 32) / 1.8 = C. 5. If you have trouble with any subjects and find yourself surrounded by instructors and ***** *******, be afraid, BE VERY AFRAID ! They will sit there and smile as they begin the slow process of devoring you. ******* will make comments like, "Wouldn't you rather be an LVN ?" Not that it's a bad thing but if you go there to become an RN, I suspect that you actually want to be an RN. But that's not why she's making the suggestion. She's trying to get you to quit. ******* will even offer to put you on the fast track to the LVN program, DON'T DO IT ! It's a trap. I'm not disgruntled, but I do believe that I'm the customer who has spent a lot of money to get a product that Chaffey College has offered, and I expect Chaffey College to deliver that product to me. When I see things going on that make me concerned that they are going to take the money, run, and leave a person out in the cold, that ****** me off. And in some cases, that's what has happened in the Chaffey ADN program. If you don't learn it fast enough to suit them, they will simply write you off. That's not to say they won't work with you, but only to the point that they can document that they tried, and it's ALL YOUR FAULT. The Chaffey ADN program has a good reputation, but what happens behind the scenes will scare the hell out of you. If you're looking for a career and you choose Chaffey, be prepared to pay for it with more than just money.
