  1. Thanks RunBabyRN. BUt how can you charge/set your own rates then if you work through an agency? Dont they say they will pay you X-amount per hour regardless of time of day, and you can either take it or leave it? I have ne ver worked for any agency where I tell THEM what my rates are.

  7. Thank you for your reply. Have you developed a good system to keep track of all these different things such as mileage reimbursed versus not? I work for several agencies so it becomes so complicated as each have their own systems.
  8. Hello all I am a field home RN infusion nurse. The nursing agency I work for only reimburses mileage at 50c per mileage for ONE WAY of the trip only! And on top of that they subtract the first 20 miles from that one segment. So I drive sometimes 200 miles a day to see one patient. So my mileage reimbursement is 100 miles-20 miles= 80 miles. So on a 200 mile trip I only get reimbursed for 80 of these miles. If the distance to the patient is less than 20 miles we get NO mileage. Is this a standard practice? How do other nursing agencies/registries do home infusion mileage reimbursement? Tx
  9. Hello I understand that each company pays their contractors differently. I am a home IV infusion nurse and work for several agencies as a contractor (1099). One company frequently calls me for medicare OASIS start of care cases late in the evening like 8 or 9 or 10 pm because they cant find anyone else. Are we expected to go out at that hour and get paid the standard agency rate (on a Pay per case basis) like $80 here in California? Do any of you independent contractors ask for after hours rates or charge extra for these late hour visits? If I was on call for a company I would get a call-out rate. Kind thanks Natasha
  10. Medical coders make a fair living and many of them work from home, so you may wish to get certified as a medical coder. Also, look into YesRN.com They are similar to "Justanswer.com" for people to ask health questions online and you get paid per answer you give.

What is confusing is that I currently work with an agency "per diem" but as an independent contractor, and I have the option to take a case or not if I dont want to. I am not paid per diem but hourly. I was just wondering what the advantages would really be being an EMPLOYEE of a company per diem. Its a bit confusing. If you are "per diem" why is it mandatory to take call?

I have been an RN for 18 years now and have worked in all kinds of settings from acute care to education to home health/Iv infusion nursing which I have been doing for the past 5 years. I have tried for years to get into L/D and most applications require recent L/D experience specially in the last 2-3 years. I have looked over the forum and there are many posts for New grad RN's seeking L/D entrance advice, but not many for those of us who are experienced and would like to transition. Why wont hiring managers even look at RN's who have 18 years experience, but just not necessarily in L/D? Any advice/pointers would be appreciated.
  15. Hello All This seems to hold true not only for travel nursing but any hospital job. Their requirements for hire include RECENT (the last 2-3 years) HOSPITAL/ACUTE CARE experience. So how does one ever get a travel nurse/hospital nurse job if you have been away from the hospital for more than 3 years? Thanks
  16. Hi I am currently an independent contractor RN who does private duty and home infusion. I interviewed for a Director Nursing position at a newish Home Health agency and said that if I was offered the position, I would like to remain an independent contractor and NOT do W-2. They were not keen on this and didnt know if this would be legal. I am in California. Does anyone know if a DON in a HHA can be "hired" on a per diem basis? If so can you perhaps refer me to some regulation to confirm this please? Thanks Natasha
  17. I have been in a very frustrating situation, and thought your or someone else could possibly point me in the right direction. I have been doing my RN-BSN through TESC, NJ. I started the program some years ago. I am a foreign graduate and have already done all the same BSN subjects overseas (they were just called other names) but TESC never gave me credit for these subjects- they were all part of the BSN core curriculum. Now 6 years later I find myself having 5 subjects left to do. The college will only allow me to do the subjects one after the other because they have a set "order" which we need to follow, meaning I will take another year to complete my BSN. This is utterly ridiculous as I should have been done long ago. I have been looking around to find other schools who will let me transfer into their RN-BSN program so I can finish in les than 6 months. All of them seem to have a limit to how much I can transfer in. I have about 101 out of the 120 required semester credits to complete my BSN. Because most schools (even online) tell me that I already have too many credits to transfer to another college, I feel I am stuck with this college, and will have to wait a whole year to start my MSN-NP. I have also emailed several colleges about transferring straight into their MSN program (based on my high credit count) where they could allow me entrance without a BSN yet, but all of them come back and tell me I need to have my BSN before they will consider me for their program. I have seen RN-MSN courses online but these are not in the track I want to pursue, since I would like to get my DNP(FNP) as an outcome. Can anybody advise or recommend an ACCREDITED college where they will take me for their BSN completion program even though I have 101/120 credits already and I can complete in 6 months or less? Or if you know of a decent MSN (FNP) program that would consider me without my BSN yet? Any advice/help is appreciated!
