Ethical grounding/Caring in nursing! Thought provoking thread!
The ANA Code of ethics (ANA, 2001) specifically outlines the behaviors that should reflect all nurses' ethical and moral commitment to patients under their care. Caring as the foundation of nursing emphasizes accepting and knowing the patient, as you would know yourself in the moment of a nursing situation (Boykin & Schoenhofer, 2001) and protecting the human dignity and self-determination of patients, regardless of their medical condition (Gadow, 1989).

Ethical grounding/Caring in nursing! Thought provoking thread!
I am a newly graduated nurse. In college I was steered toward the Caring theories of nursing (Roach,Gadow, S.,Watson, Schoenhofer,Gortner,Fry, Ray and Reeder). Reading the discussion about Jean Watson on this website was very edifying and greatly debated. Now, I would love to hear opinions, experiences or other theories on nursing ethics and the relationship it may or may not have with the nursing theories on caring. What are the pros and cons of these two concepts. How does ethical knowing guide your thinking about caring as the foundation for advanced nursing practice?

Taking Care of yourself.
I love the ideas everyone has on the topic. this is what i do to take care of myself. A Quote from Confucius describes how i live my life, "It does not matter how slowly you go, so long as you do not stop." I know that many people in life put things off, waiting for enough time in their schedules to start. I've been going to school, off and on, for the last 12 years. My goal is to become a nurse practioner. At first money and prestige were my main objective for becoming a nurse., Now having two kids, I want a better life for them. As you can imagine, working full time as a clinical manager at a dialysis center, raising two boys and going to school has taken a toll on me. I realized I have no time for me, and reading self-help books does not translate into a better me. It may give me direction, but simply reading them does not necessarily take care of me. Within the last six months I realized I need to set time for me. Now I take time for evening strolls thru the park . This gives me time to reflex on my day and the days to come. I find this to be the most stimulating part of my day. After this, I feel refreshed and invigorated to tackle my next task. Also, every month I take a day off to go to the Day Spa. This is a day just for me. I get a package deal called the ultimate spa. this includes an one hour massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, hairstlyed with deep conditioning treatment and lunch. This is the ultimate in relaxation. There are other things I could do to take better care of myself. Such as, eating right and exercise. This is something I am working towards now. If there are any suggestions I would appreciate them.

That sounds like great ideas. Does this give you a rejuvenated feeling when you return to work? do you feel you give better patient care?

Need Advice with a Charge nurse.
Only been a nurse a few months longer than myself. thank you for the advice kaycee. and how his behavior affects the pt. care is that he does not take a hands on approach to problems pt. may have i.e. why is their BP is high? He just does the bare minimum and does not take the extra step to provide the pt. with a caring attitude.

Need Advice with a Charge nurse.
I am not hurt about this situation or his attutide, my concern is for the patients. My strongest attribute is my managerial skills. I have some solutions in mind to solve this problem. One is sitting down and talking with him and writing a list of expectations and job description I expect of him. Have him sign the paper and tell him I expect nothing less then the expectation i have for him. The question I have is directed to the more experience nurses who have dealt with a nurse such as this. I have been a nurse for 5 years and want to know if this is an attitude that can be corrected.

if you separate his personality faults, he is a great nurse. I have seen him do his nursing duties with great responsiblility. Its his personality and narcissism.

Need Advice with a Charge nurse.
I am a Nurse manager at an out patient Dialysis facility. I'm having problems with a charge nurse who thinks they know everything and feels they never do anothing wrong. I will list a few problems I have with them: 1. Dictates his duties to the nurses he works with. 2. Thinks they know everything 3. Feels they never do anothing wrong 4. Labels me as the "bad guy" with allegations I do not do my job 5. Not a team player 6. Not a patient advocate (ie. set appts. for them, follows thru, educates patients, etc.) 7. Feels I belittle him. This person is a great nurse thats why I made them charge nurse, which should offset the fact he says I belittle him, an allegation I fail to see. I know that I am not looking to be well liked and everyone friend on the floor, my main concern is for the well-being and care for the patient. I'm not saying that I do not listen to the concerns or problems the nurse's have, I will always be there for them and support them within the guidelines and standards of the facility. The staff know me as a caring nurse and the I advocate they treat the patients with the same care. I would love feedback from anyone who has dealt with someone like this and what solutions you used to deal with it. I hope i have given enough information, if you need more ask and i will try and answer. thank you.

Taking Care of yourself.
Taking care of patients is the main focus of nurses. The concern I have is the lack of care nurses have for their selves. I would love to hear some feedback on the benefits of taking care of yourselve, how some of you do take care of yourself and are there any websites concerning this issue. Please give me any suggestions.

Can Someone Be a Nurse Without Jean Watson??
Patients who see that a Nurse genuinley cares for them and their well-being builds a trusting relationship. The patient will listen more attentively when the nurse educates and advocates that they need to care for themselves. I strongly suggest reading Watson's theory, I also suggest reading "Nursing as Caring" by Anne Boykin and Savina Schoenhofer.
