Hello all, So I'm currently going to Be starting nursing school next fall. But before I do I'm already looking to become an CRNA (the decision was made prior to nursing school). I understand it's a long way off, but I would really appreciate it if anyone could tell me exactly what grades they look at, the two years of prereqs to get into nursing school or the actual grades from nursing school! Thanks!

I guess they're asking the OP? I know rural settings are in higher demand as opposed to big cities. I live in texas and don't plan on moving out of state anytime soon.

Okay, so my ultimate goal is to become a CRNA. I'm currently a freshman in college with half of my nursing Pre reqs out of the way. Simply put, what grades do CRNA schools look out? My prereq grades or my nursing grades?

And there's really no difference between you and an anesthesiologist, correct?

I heard the shortage is mainly on the west coast. The southern states are really experiencing a shortage. I'm in Texas.

Then you won't become a nurse, it's that simple.

So is the military route one of the better ways to go? All those allowances and tax free deductions seem great!

Thanks itrust. I appreciate your post. People are saying "google it, google it" but there's just such a wide range of numbers I don't know which one to believe. I apologize in advance if I offended anyone, it's just that the salaries are not clearly stated anywhere.

Now, before I get blown up with comments saying "it's not about money, but patient care". I get that. No need to tell me over and over. I heard CRNAs mainly get hired in rural areas, which kind of scares me. I would simply like to know the average starting salary of your line of work, plus the area you live in, and/or the amount of experience you have as a CRNA. Thank you!

There are only 3 schools (not counting the army) that offer a CRNA program in Texas. Texas Wes TCU Baylor Not exactly cheap schools. ( wait till you see TCU's pricing ) so I would start saving now as an RN and get the necessary ICU experience before you can apply.

I personally would like to be a CRNA when I grow up. It's all preference. You're already going through nursing school, which is about 1/2 of the time needed to become a nurse anesthetist.

How exactly does it affect nurses? I've heard there are shortages of nurses all across the country, particularly the West coast. And was wondering if those shortages are due to the recent news about Obamacare. Nurses are having a hard time finding work after graduating- a scary thought for anyone looking into nursing. There's obviously more than one underlying cause, but can anyone please shed some light on the situation? Thanks!

Thanks for all the insight! My mother is a nurse, and I've shadowed her before. I like the prestige that comes with the title "Doctor" but the patient care that comes with nursing trumps that I think. I feel like I would get burned out mentally during the MD route, which Is another deterrence. That's why I've chosen the nursing route.

That's seriously impressive!

So I'm looking at a good 10 years of schooling. An MD would only require 2 more years of school. I'm definitely at a crossroad here.
