  1. @SweetDream For our cohort, we prereq's just had to be finished before starting the first semester. You could still be taking prereqs after applying. Not sure if it's still the same since the merger.
  2. @ OP - I work on a surgical care floor and we usually have between 6-16 patients per aide depending on census. We do vitals Q8H for stable patients and Q4H for unstable patients. This might be something you want to suggest at your next staff meeting. I'm not sure which type of floor you work on (I didn't read all of the posts), but I can understand how frustrating it is to do vitals right before shift change (Our last set is due at 7:00 and we're supposed to be out by 7:30). If not all of your patients are critical, this may be something to suggest. For example, we do vitals Q4 for any patient POD #1 or less, patients on telemetry monitors, patients who have had unstable vitals in the past 24 hours, or anyone else that we are keeping an extra close watch on.
  3. Hey ayshiiii! I'm currently in the Rutgers Accelerated BSN program and I took several online classes including nutrition, chemistry lecture, developmental psych and a computer course. With the merger of Rutgers and UMDNJ, however, this may have changed. I'm in the original Rutgers program and they allowed some online classes. I'm not sure if UMDNJ is the same and Rutgers is adopting the UMDNJ prerequisites (which really makes me mad! I did so many more prereq's than students who are now getting the same exact degree I am! Anyway, that's for another post...) Definitely call the admissions office at the schools you are applying to because they all accept different courses. For example, Rutgers wouldn't accept Developmental Psych (in person) from Ramapo but did accept Developmental Psych (online) from RVCC. NJTransfer.com is a great site that allows you to see which classes a program accepts, but it is better to call or speak to someone is person. Hope this helps!
  4. Thanks for your feedback everyone! I currently work as a tech at a hospital so I'm going to look into whether or not they will reimburse me. Thanks, again.
  5. Would it be silly for a nursing student to take an ACLS or PALS certification course before completing school? I would like to eventually end up in Emergency nursing but I think that this would look good on a resume for most positions, but I don't want to be in over my head. Thanks in advance for your advice!
  6. Rowan, I'm actually in the NB cohort!
  7. Bills and class schedules are available online now. I was placed in the afternoon section for labs 11:30-4. Anyone else???
  8. That's what I was told by the office of student services. I still have a $0 amount due on my online account and if I don't sign up for classes til the 20th I'm not sure how ill have a bill before then. Nic, I just sent you a PM with the person I've been speaking with.
  9. The only reason I mentioned choosing of classes was because I was hoping to get the morning section since I could carpool with a friend and still work a couple of hours occasionally in the afternoon.
  10. FYI- I was told that our term bill for this summer semester is due May 17, but there is a $0.00 amount due on my term bill. I wish RU would get their heads on straight.
  11. Nic- I've been bugging Office of Student Services Dean and his Administrative Assistant about 3-4 times a week and they finally got back to me with a date. It's at 2pm at the Newark campus (Ackerson Hall lounge). If anyone going to the May 10 orientation could let me know of any time sensitive info you get, that would be great. I hate waiting til the last minute to buy books and whatnot. Thanks in advance! Ill be meeting most of you at the start of the semester.
  12. Also found out today that the alternative orientation date is May 20. I'm still going to try to rearrange my schedule to go on May 10 so I get first choice for class times and have enough time to order books and whatever else I may need to do
  13. MsNurse- are you in the accelerated program?
  14. Mkt- most community colleges will fulfill 90% of your pre-req's. Use njtransfer.com to see which will transfer. The only course that is specifically offered at Rutgers is Cultural Dimensions which can be challenged. Rowan-they used to switch campuses but started to split the campuses last year. I am about 30-35 minutes from RU and plan to commute. I unfortunately heard parking is a b***h! It's a 15 minute walk from the nearest RU lot ($80 for summer $200 for year round). I plan to pay for the summer since we'll be on campus 4/7 days a week. But my friend said for the other semesters where you're only on campus 2 days a week they park next to the nursing classrooms and pay by meter, taking a break every 2 hours to refill their quarters. There are also parking garages but they are $20 a day. This information is for NB, I don't know about Newark.
  15. Everyone should've received an email from student services regarding campus placement and orientation by now. See you there!
  16. I took all the prerequisites except for Cultural Dimensions and Interactive Processes. Cultural Dimensions is only offered at Rutgers, so I know for sure I've got to challenge one. And I've never taken a communcation course, so I'm assuming I'll have to challenge Interactive Processes. When I spoke with the Dean and Administrative Assistant at the information sessions, they said that all of my other coursework will transfer. The only courses you are allowed to challenge are Dimensions, Processes, Nutrition and Developmental Psych. I've taken Nutrition and Developmental Psych so I know for sure I don't have to challenge those. Hope this helps!
  17. Heather- thanks for emailing the syllabi! Definitely seems like a TON of work before July 1, I'm so glad you shared that with us. I'm buying the books from my co-worker Monday so that I can get started now instead of waiting until orientation.
  18. I'm a PCA on the floor while I'm in nursing school and I'm curious about replacing my shoes. I've read recommendations that they need to be replaced every 500 miles. Needless to say I work 24-32 hours a week and calculated that I walk approximately 6-10 miles per shift. At this rate I'd need to replace my shoes once a month. I currently wear a pair of super comfy New Balance walking shoes which were around $50. I didn't wanna shell out the $120 for Dansko's but now I'm rethinking it. Do Dansko's need to be replaced as often? How often do you replace your shoes? Is 500 miles realistic or should I look more into the amount of time I wear them (i.e. months)? Thanks!
  19. Hopewellmom, I'm just realizing you has mentioned earlier that you are from Mercer Co so I'm assuming you're in Hopewell. I work weekends in Flemington so it may be a possibility we could meet on weekends somewhere between for study sessions. I hope you decide to enroll! Also, any chance you'd be able to forward the syllabi to me? I'd like to take a look at them as well. My email is [email protected]. Thanks in advance!
  20. Hopewellmom - the info session dates were hard to find on the site, so I think most people don't even know of them. To answer your questions... Ive heard registering will be done at orientation so you'll get help with that there. Also from what i understand challenging is where they give you the general syllabus, you buy the course book, read/study the sections in the syllabus then take the departmental final. You must get at least a 75% on the finals in order to stay enrolled. Go to the nursing student services site and BUG any one of these fine people to find out your campus: Student Services Staff Contact Information | College of Nursing Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey Lastly you can look up class times here for the summer: Rutgers University - Online Schedule of Classes Just check the appropriate boxes then type in Nursing as the subject on the next page. I hope this all helps!
  21. Thanks a ton nic! I emailed her just now hoping that I will be able to do the same. Who knows, maybe she'll schedule us at the same time so that she doesn't have to go over it more than once. Unfortunately that means I may not meet the rest of you until class begins!
  22. Kate- you may want to check your spam box on your email. Oddly that's where my acceptance email was sent. Also, several of us had to call or email student services to find out which campus we're on, some people were told in the email. Lastly, I don't think there are particular conditions based on grades of your current classes. You'll still have to send in your final transcripts but they just want to make sure that your grade trends don't change drastically. Hopewellmom- did you attend any of the information sessions? That's where I'm pulling a lot of my information from. If you have specific questions let me know and I might be able to answer them or I can ask the girl I work with who is currently in the program. My only confusion is with the schedule set for our NB summer session. Does anyone know for sure if Health Assessment and Nursing Care Provider are lecture, clinical or both? It doesn't seem as though there is enough time allotted in the schedule for both.
  23. Nic, let me know what they tell you about making an appointment for a separate personal meeting. I have a final from 7-9am on May 10 so if orientation is 10am or after I can swing it, otherwise maybe I'll try to take the final a week prior. Jayipe, they only started to break it up into two cohorts last year because there was such a high demand and only 20 seats. In 2011-2012 it was every other semester at Newark and every other at NB. This is what we were told at the information session held back in October, there will be 20 seats per location. Even though they have yet to switch the app to have both options (you can only choose Newark accelerated) they told us to put our preference in the essay section otherwise they would try to group us by distance from home.
  24. I emailed and left a voicemail and luckily that worked for me. It took 4 days for my acceptance to be processed in order to use Enrollment Pathway and I called the help desk and finally got my NetID to work. The website said I needed to pay the enrollment/deposit fee first, but it may be different for re-enrollment students. Good luck in figuring it all out. Hopefully you'll have better luck since you already know the ropes of the RU online system.
  25. I finally got in touch with the Administrative Asst for Student Services. I wish I could post her name but ToS won't allow it. She informed me that I'm in the NB cohort. The $150 deposit link is on your Status page where you accept the offer. I still am having trouble with creating a NetID now. Apparently my information isn't in the system yet or something.
