  1. Thanks "lovin my job". Finally a positive post! I'm in the LPN program, and starting to wonder if their was a happy or satisfied LPN out there. Thanks, it just felt good to read that, gives me the boost I needed for the 3 hrs of studying I'll have tonight after I put my 3 young kids to bed.
  2. Hello, thanks for your reply. Yes, I did check with my provincial college of LPNs, and that is the answer that they gave me: " New-Brunswick is the only province in Canada that the title NURSE has been protected". That's all he could really tell me on the subject. It's like they don't want to talk about it over here. It's like they have the attitude "why open up a can of worms"? Maybe I would be better off speaking with a lawyer, he/she could at least tell me if it's worth even fighting for, if it's worth telling the LPNs aroud here that we are the ONLY province that LPNs are not concidered nurses! We are the only province that hasn't EVOLVED if you ask me. I've noticed that no one even knows about this. The LPNs that I have mentioned this too just look at me like I'm totaly making this up, instead of saying "we should really fight for our rights too! We deserved the recongnition too!":nurse: Well, thanks for letting me vent. This is a great site and most people are very helpful and supportive.
  3. LPNs in New-Brunswick do the same work as LPNs in other provinces, but still can't use the term "NURSE". The term has been protected in NB, and can only be used to describe the registered nurse and the nurse practioner I beleive. Anyhow, I know an LPN can not describe herself as a nurse. I also am VERY puzzled and upset about this. I'm not an "assistant" , yet I'm not a "nurse" either, so what am I exactly? I wonder if the term "Nurse" was protected in your provinces also, and did they just add the LPN to their list of nurse once the title changed from RNA? I wonder if this will ever change in my province, or is it legally impossible? Thanks
  4. Well, the reason I couldn't find proof that LPN's were concidered nurses in my province is because there isn't ANY. New-Brunswick is the only province where the term "NURSE" is protected. An LPN is a "practical nurse" and is not to describe herself as a "NURSE". I'm very disapointed about this.
  5. It's like they don't have any pride around here The LPNs have been convinced that they are not "nurses". I wish I could have some kind of document I could print and put in my pocket so I could show the next RN or LPN that tries to convince me I'm not a nurse. hmmmmmmmm. :trout:
  6. I'm currently taking LPN. I'm in Bathurst New-Brunwick.:
  7. Thank you very much for your reply. You gave me that answer I was hoping for. She said that the world "nurse" was protected by law by the registered nurse, so we HAD to go by "practical nurse" and never just "nurse".
  8. Hello all, let me begin by saying I am in the lpn program and loving it. The other day, I was told by a presently employed lpn that lpns are just NOT nurses. She firmly told me that the world "nurse" was protected by the resgistered nurse and was NOT to be used to describe an lpn. I was really surprised and hurt by this. All that I am putting into this I won't even be recondnized as a "nurse"? If this isn't correct, does anyone have some kind of legal document that I could read that tells me that I will be able to identify myself as a NURSE and not feel like I'm pretending to be someone I am not? Oh, and I'm in New-Brunswick. Thanks so much in advance. Love this site
  9. Hi! Thanks so much for your reply. You do IV's??? Wow, I didn't know LPNs could do that. That's good though. I'm also curious to know if you are concidered a "nurse" if you aren't an RN? I think here in bathurst they call LPNs "auxiliaires" in French, and not "infirmieres" (which means nurse). I'm very excited about going for my LPN, but then I worry that I will put all that energy into my studies and then work VERY hard as an LPN, and not even be called a "nurse". I asked an RN in Bathurst if LPN's were concidered nurses even though weren't RN's and she replied " no, not really. When a staff memeber sais they want a nurse, they mean an RN". What do you think? I'm still going for my LPN regardless, I just want to be prepared and not be disapointed that's all. The salary went up for LPNs right? I was told $18.00/hr ? Is that about right? Thanks in advance!!!!
  10. EI would still pay for my course no matter what the future holds for LPN's. It's the way the system works. No matter what course you take, if you are on employment insurance, it automaticaly pays your studies. As long as it's not university level (3+ years) it pays, (LPN is a 2 year program here). As long as it is still offered, they will cover most of it. But it doesn't automaticaly garantee the future of LPNs. But thanks for the advice. I will check that out for sure.
  11. Hey there! I'm going to take my LPN and I'm very excited and happy about it, and would like to work in a hospital. But lately I've been reading alot of posts about "phasing out" LPN's. In alot of hospitals in the US, they don't have any LPNs in the hospitals at all. I also read that in Quebec they also don't hire LPNs at all anymore, is this true? I'm in Bathurst New-Brunswick and right now, they are begging for LPNs. I wonder if this is what will happen to NB too. I can see that maybe in the future they will no longer hire any LPNs, but will they acutally "lay off" LPN"s? I'm really looking forward to being an LPN, but I'm also very scared to end up unemployed in a 5 years.
  12. Fergus 51, that was a great way to put it!! I will be using that from now on!!
  13. I'm in NB. I already know where as stand as far as upgrading goes. I've seen a career guidance councelor, I know what the requirements are, and my upgrading starts in Sept. Yes it's all payed for, babysitter, gas, the course ect... It's something we have here called "Employment insurance". If I've worked the required amount of hours in a years time, I get maternity leave benefits and it just keeps on paying as long as I am in College. This doesn't work with university courses (courses over 2yrs length), only college.
  14. Wow! Thanks so much! That's so encouraging to know I'm not the only one that felt this way. Although I still have no clue if I'm going to take LPN or RN, atleast I have support and your posts were very helpful
  15. Hi, thanks for your reply. Actually, I already have tow children. I've been a stay at home mom with two kids for 5 yrs (was the HARDEST thing I ever did) It was very HARD to be 100% dependant on my husband and not leave the house for days and days. To have NO social life and be dependant on others because you don't work outside the home was VERY depressing to me. My children HAD to have felt that. This is my third child. By september, the two I have now will be in school. This time around I want to do things differently. My self esteem was sooooo low, I had lost my identity. Now that I feel I'm starting to find myslef again and my identity, I should stay motivated by going out there a.s.a.p. My mother in law would babysit for the first year, and then the daycare is right inside the college when it would be time to bring him there. I already feel guilty about wanting to do this but In a way I think it would be good for my children too. I want them to see me as a fighter, and a strong independant woman. Not the insecure mommy that almost never smiled that I was as a stay at home mom. Oh, and pardon my spelling errors, English isn't my first language.
