ACCEPTED in to UNLV SON!
I'm glade it helped you! I bought shoes from dove apparel and they were comfortable for me overall, taking into consideration long standing hours for clinical. Shoe preference seemed across the board, no major complaints, just individual preference. I'd suggest trying on a few brands in store and then ordering it online; it is usually cost saving. I personally did not use flash cards, because I would spend more time making them and not enough time studying from them! The most effective method for me was reading through the power points/outlines given and textbook simultaneously, I used the textbook as reference and emphasis on topics that were covered in the power point. It's always good to remember that nursing school is application based knowledge and critical thinking, so you'll need to understand concepts as a whole when studying, rather than unsound memorizing. :)

ACCEPTED in to UNLV SON!
First off, congratulations on being accepted into UNLV's nursing program! This is my first semester of being in the program, so I'll give you the insight on what I have gained thus far. I worked two days a week, Saturday and Sunday, (part-time) and was able to do well in all the classes (A's and B's). Yet, the decision to work or not is completely individual. I think it depends on the necessity for you to work and how readily you can absorb-retain-apply information, along with the age old time management skills! For me, it wasn't the quantity of studying I did, it was the quality of it that helped me succeed. Once the semester takes off, you will be tested every week, whether it be a skills test, quiz, exam or all of the above. So, remember to take each day in stride, have patience, and don't lose sight of your own health in the life transition that is nursing school. Before the program begins, it is helpful to get everything in order ranging from having a clean house to sorting out what relationships you'll take and leave behind; the fewer hiccups you can avoid the better. As for registration and paper work before school begins, the staff at signing session will give you thorough details about what is needed from you on that day. My only advice is to order books ahead of time if you're buying them online and have a good sum of money saved to pay for the miscellaneous expenses that comes with starting the program for ex. uniforms, shoes, stethoscope, drug test, immunizations/vaccines, school supplies, books etc. As a side note, your space in each classes is accounted for (the lucky 48 students!) so there is no urgency to register for classes. :) Hope this helps!

UNLV SON Summer 2013
They don't have the summer term bundle available in the bookstore yet, but it is practically the same set, and costs the same amount as previous semester's bundles. I just went ahead and bought the same exact books, brand new, online to save money. The email they sent out specifically listed what was in the bundle, so I'm just hoping that is really all there is inside. From what I understand, the Pageburst is used only for the digital books through Elsevier online; it is the software that Elsevier uses for students to download the material from.

I took Phil 101 to fulfill the second humanities prerequisite at UNLV. It is not mandatory to take Philosophy, but it is one option you can choose, the other common option is taking Communications 101.

UNLV SON Summer 2013
I'm debating whether I should purchase the bundle or each textbook separately online. Going the online route will save about $200, but I'm wondering if I'll be missing something that only comes with the bundle, does any one know? Thanks. :)

UNLV SON Summer 2013
They said we'll know around the beginning of March which clinical day we'll have, but I'm assuming we'd find out in orientation unless you call before hand. The April 22nd deadline is in place so that they can process all of our paperwork to the hospital on time for them to select who has clinical for which day. I hope this helps!

If you go online, even nurse mates has men's shoes in leather, lace up, and all white. :) I hope your contract signing went well; that to do list folder was fairly hefty. Now, I'm proudly broke.

UNLV SON Summer 2013
That is especially high for summer; I'm surprised to see the competition increase so quickly between semesters.

UNLV SON Summer 2013
I'm curious to know what the cut off was! How well did you do on the hesi, I know that counts for about half our points.
-
UNLV SON Summer 2013
:/ Did you finish all your classes? 88 points is high, I'm surprised the cut off would be above that number.
-
UNLV SON Summer 2013
I had roughly 92 points and I got a call around 11 am! My orientation is on March 19th at 9 am, anyone else have that same date? Hang in there! I'm sure calls will be made over the next few days. Also, congratulations to everyone who got in so far! :)

I just got a call, and I'm in (tears of joy)!!! :D

UNLV SON Summer 2013
The front desk of the nursing department, she said they were most likely still deliberating because she hadn't heard any new news. That's awesome IRISHLUCK what branch were you in? Also, your best asset is perseverance, if you have that than there is no need for worry; everything is within your means. :)

UNLV SON Summer 2013
My best advice is to tread carefully in your biology/math/chemistry classes, it will pay off. By the time you apply there could be fewer or more applicants...it's all a guessing game. :) Supposedly the nursing department is still deciding upon the top 48 applicants, but we should be receiving calls by the end of the week.

UNLV SON Summer 2013
As of lately, I'd say between 80-100 people apply. So, roughly half get accepted from the pool of applicants each semester, still better chances than most other schools though!

UNLV SON Summer 2013
If anyone receives a call please post & good luck for the week ahead! :)

UNLV SON Summer 2013
My phone will be within my sight at every moment next week & obnoxiously on loud. aha At least the 48 students will be picked tomorrow (Finally)! What did the adviser tell your friend exactly? My confidence levels rose. :)

At least you'll have one degree under your belt! From the way it sounded, they decide on Friday March 1st and begin calling people the day after during open hours. The adviser told me that the head director of the nursing program calls each person; which might take awhile aha. Yeah, I had over ten people in my signing session so I'm sure at least 90 have applied thus far. :/ It seems like the main importance for being competitive is taking your math & science classes only once and achieving a high score on the hesi. I started doing meditation through practicing yoga at a new studio I've been attending, it helps being present in the moment instead of allowing your mind to wander-stress. Even allowing yourself to go outside and to be in silence for a few minutes will help calm your senses. Oh, and stretching your body helps tremendously with letting go of built up tension we learn to hold on to through out the day. Really, its about the little moments of awareness. & I am also a victim of stress acne so I know the frustration...

Aha Now we probably just sound obsessive, but I keep hoping there will be some bit of information! What classes are you still taking? Honestly, it can even be as early as Friday night-Saturday; they begin contacting people immediately. Around 90 people at the least have applied, so I'm just hoping my points will be enough to finally start in the summer. Meditation helps a ton with the stress. :)

UNLV SON Summer 2013
It's killing me as well! (Hence why I've been on allnurses practically every day aha) I've been preoccupying myself with work, yoga, writing and any other time consuming activity. How are you handling it? A previous applier told me that they begin calling people, who have been accepted, immediately after the deadline date. So, if you don't hear anything at the latest by mid week then you were denied. Nerve wracking!
-
UNLV SON Summer 2013
Well, good luck to you on getting in! The verdict will come soon, but in the meantime staying patient will be the challenge. aha
-
UNLV SON Summer 2013
Right? Having done all my prerequisites for the past three years I've been following the nursing program closely and I've never heard the advisers speak of such a high number of applicants applying especially for summer; ironically. Supposedly, last summer barely 60 people applied because of the tuition raise. Clearly, that is not an issue for many anymore. aha Have you attended your signing session yet?

UNLV SON Summer 2013
Hey everyone! I am also a hopeful candidate for being accepted into this upcoming summer term at UNLV; my signing session is on February 21st. :) I'm a bit nervous because I heard this is the largest pool of applicants UNLV's nursing program has had thus far. Considering the notion that summer term was one of the least competitive terms to get into I was quite shocked to hear they over filled signing sessions. I'm curious to know if others have heard the same? I have roughly 92 points & scored a 94 on the HESI. Good luck fellow hopefuls!
