UNLV SON Spring 2014??
bunsiebooboo No problem! I'm glad I could help! As far as study tips.... where do I start haha! Things like whether to read before or after class, that really depends on personal preference. I tried reading before and I found out I learned better reading after lecture. Some other things, like note taking kind of vary from class to class. For our 305 class she does not want us to have laptops/tablets out so, its helpful to print the power points. For our 307 class she gives you outlines of the lecture, so I add notes if I need to directly to the outline I print out. And for 306, pharmacology, that class I suggest having the powerpoint open on a laptop if you can, taking notes, and recording. LOL. Studying is definitely something that helps if you have a study buddy, or group. They talk all about teamwork and fun stuff like that at orientation. But it really does help! Definitely try not to leave cramming for the night before because reading is ESSENTIAL! It's a drag, lol, but the tests are sometimes directly from the reading. Notecards are my BFF's lol. And sometimes I listen to lectures in the car. I really hoped this helped, I tried to be descriptive ahah! I am definitely NOT the best at studying, (procrastination is my middle name), I have been learning how to study for nursing school as I go..but Im trying to get better. ahaha!

UNLV SON Spring 2014??
They have to be as white as possible, if the brand logo is like silver (like sketchers or nike or new balance) thats okay. A VERY little bit of silver or light grey but no other colors. And make sure they have laces and are all leather. They cannot have that little mesh area that some sneakers have too (just incase fluids spill on your shoes ) Hope this helps! But yea you can also send a pic in if youre not sure!

UNLV SON Spring 2014??
Hi bunsiebooboo :) I bought all of my books used online through amazon and just whatever sites I could find them. It saved me LOTS of money. The only thing is with the "Fundamentals of Nursing" book, you need to buy the online access separately if you purchase a used book. The online access is used for modules. I think its around 50-60 for that, but its easy to purchase through the Evolve website. I spent a total of about 425 on all my books, including the online access and the bundle is 600 new! so its worth it!

UNLV SON Spring 2014??
Yea i could not remember the exact prices! haha! I think kzato12 was more accurate xD. As far as the scrubs I purchased one through online (they are just way too expensive) and bought extras from a scrub store (scrubs and beyond). The ones we purchase online are the brand "Dove" and those are required in the hospital. As far as for class we can wear any pair of red scrubs. All have to have the patches. :)

UNLV SON Spring 2014??
Debit or credit is fine (it just can't be cash since you will be paying for everything online during your first orientation). I wish I could remember exactly but I think the background check was 50.00 and the scrubs were 100, I believe. At least for last semester. I heard they may be getting a deal for cheaper scrubs though! :). They give you a form to do your TB test free. They also give you a list of places to get CPR certified and get a physical. I went to a location on the list in Henderson, the physical was about 45 and the cpr certification was 50 I believe. Hope this helps!

Thank you!!! That post really did help a lot as well! Sometimes I get intimidated because I have heard so many classmates over the years talking about how they work as CNAs, volunteer, or have some kind of experience in the field, even if its minimal. I have not had any experience and Im always worried that Im gonna be behind already! Congrats to you! You're on the home stretch!!! And yes UNLV is a 4 semester program.. Haha! Ill have to catch a game sometime!! :) Thanks again for your help!

ACCEPTED in to UNLV SON!
:) Hi classmate! Congrats to you as well! We did it! I'm right there with you as far as how I learn new information. It takes me a bit to catch on, but then it just clicks and I got it! Working is a bit of a necessity for me, so Ill probably just work weekends for now and see how that goes. I just really want to be as organized and on it as possible! I can honestly say that is definitely not how my college career has been in the past.. lol:facepalm: My orientation is on the 30th. Right when I got that call though, I felt like I needed to start doing something at that very moment! I just need to cool my engines. All the excitement and nerves are getting to me... I hear you on the financial aid situation... UNLV always worries me in that area. lol I think I will definitely pick up a medical terminology book. That could be something small I can browse for the rest of the summer. That and Ive heard from a few people to do a little bit of working out and get in to shape because nursing school is also physically exhausting. You're right though, this is the last time we'll get to relax for a while. Let's enjoy it! Thank you so much for all your advice! More tips on school supplies (binders, organizational material, ect) would be greatly appreciated! Looking forward to meeting you classmate!

ACCEPTED in to UNLV SON!
Thank you so much for all your advice! I went to Spring Valley High school. Wow! You have a lot on your plate! That makes me feel better knowing that it IS possible. It seems like people have only been telling me that having a job while in nursing school will never work out. But I only have a fiance and a dog to worry about so I think I can handle it. I will definitely try working for at least a semester. Thank you !!!!:)

ACCEPTED in to UNLV SON!
Yay! I was accepted in to the UNLV nursing program on my first try! It really is a dream come true.. but I already have so many questions and fears I am very curious of current or previous UNLV nursing students and their thoughts about the program in general. I have my student orientation on July 30th and was wondering if I need my vaccinations by that time.. if so which ones? Also ... has anyone attempted to hold a SMALL part-time job while in nursing school? I mean only Saturdays and Sundays for 6-8 hours. If so, did it conflict with school at all? Ive heard that advisors strongly suggest you do not work whatsoever... Im just so nervous! I would greatly appreciate any tips or advice on preparing myself for the fall semester (which starts September 9 correct?). I really was NOT expecting to get in (as negative as that sounds) so I haven't prepared myself AT ALL. Should I start getting supplies sooner than later? When should I begin studying?! I may be jumping the gun, and Im sure they will answer many of my questions at orientation, but I have often been a procrastinator and I am determined to be ahead of the game throughout nursing school! Im rambling now but thanks for your advice guys! I appreciate it! :)
