  1. I have interviewed for the BSN to DNP program at FIU, and thus I am waiting for a response. I have also been accepted to UM's MSN program. I like both programs, but my main concern is that it takes at FIU longer to be able to take the NP board test. This makes a difference as to how I am budgeting my future financials. Any feedback for those at FIU as to how the program has been working.
  2. Did you get an e-mail titled "University of Miami Electronic Fingerprint"? It has instructions. If you have not received the e-mail I assume that getting in contact with the background clearance company would be a start.
  3. In addition that there is a bachelor degree component (BSN being required by local hospitals), speed (time is also money), school has a national name (helpful should I move out of S. Florida, and if I want to pursue further studies), equipment will be updated. Also, was nice to know did not have spend time preparing for the TEAS.
  4. Hello all, I just sent my invite request to the Facebook forum. Looks will be the 1st dude in the group. LOL! Has know how long it will take to get vaccinated? Saw some repeat vaccinations so I was wondering if it was possible before the Dec 21 deadline that I got. Set in motion the background check, sent yesterday the $500 check, and signed up with a CPR class.
  5. Hi, I read the list that Anelite forwarded and I was not surprised by the listings. I factored budget and your transportation (w/o car) goals, and it seemed that the best bet is Dadeland near the metro. FYI, public transportation in Miami is most developed from downtown to Dadeland in a north/south fashion (UM is in between). I saw cheaper listings but these were in more western locations where having a car is recommended. Areas not surprised by high prices: Collins, Brickell, Coral Gables, parts of South Beach, Coconut Grove, Key Biscayne - avg households are high in these areas. Dadeland is more of a mix.
  6. I do not have any plans of working. However, it will be important to work on getting a job, as well as exploring future options. UM is a nationally known school, and I anticipate that will come especially handy if for example I become interested in a masters. What will be the best fit long-term- anesthesia (sp?), nurse practiotioning, administrative...? I have an idea but would like to take a closer look at these.
  7. Groovy, most of my prereqs were at Kendall, with exceptions at Wolfson and Interamerican.
  8. South Florida Market Update, I am a big believer that part of the school experience is to simultaneously seek for a job. Here is an update about S. Florida that might be interesting. Baptist Hospital has reduced the schools that it partners for its scholars program from 4 to 2. The surprise (for me) was that Miami Dade was dropped, given that it is the largest nursing school in the area. I wonder if this means that Baptist will be open to hiring students outside of its scholars program, or/and that there will be more Miami-Dade students approaching the same health care facilities that we might be looking into.
  9. Congrats! DC, great city. Regarding suggestions, a lot revolves around what you are looking for. For example, for many part of the attraction of Miami is Miami Beach, but the cost and the incovenience of crossing a bridge (just in case Miami Beach is on an island) during the duration for an intensive program is probably not worth it. Also, in addition ot the classes, time will need to be budgeted for looking for a job.
  10. I took my prereqs during the past year at MDC? Is there anyone else that did the same? Would be fun to know.
  11. Hi, isn't there supposed to be a link in the UM portal where incoming students can communicate? Would fell better about using this than Facebook.
  12. Hello Johanna06, I would touch base with Financial Aid regarding loans. It seems counterintuiative that a prospective student would be denied loans, especially if they have been current with past school related debt. Regarding start date, the school doesn't develop a set date in advance. However, I was told in August (approximately) to expect classes to start around mid-January. Hope this helps.
  13. Hi Anelite2014, Wanted to respond earlier. (Also the reply button seems to be working funny from computer.) Thank you for the congratulations. I live in Miami. I am actually moved to my inlaws and preparing to rent my house. In the event that anybody is interested, it has 3 bedrooms + a study (2000 square feet). Based on the prices that I am seeing, I can probably work out a better price if there are 3 roommates. I will be honest. Many pluses, only it won't be next to UM. However, it is very accesible through Bird Rd, a major Miami thoroghfare. Location was not a problem when volunteering at Doctors Hospital which is acros the street of UM.
  14. to afrochica. I applied on Thrusday Aug 30. My documents didn't get to the admissions committee until Sept 7 Friday. Good luck!
  15. This is response to a scholarship question: I am aware of 2 specific scholarships to this program. One is full ride and a second is for 10K. Both had Oct 1 deadlines. Other scholarships that I am aware about, are open for application during 2013. These belong to various non-UM institutions. This is what I know, so there could be other options.
