  1. A little background first. I am an LPN that returned to school for RN. I have graduated and just waiting to take the boards. I heard about a job opening through an acquantaince and applied for it. I went for the interview on a Friday, went back that Monday for the drug test and fingerprinting. I was told that Monday that I would get a call back within 24 hours as to what my status and pay was. I was also told they were hiring a few people and wanted to get everybody into orientation at the same time so. I knew that the DON was out sick that week so ok. Now it has been over a week since I was supposed to get that phone call back and I still haven't heard anything. I have tried to call but left a message and I spoke to the DON while he was out but he still couldn't tell me what my pay would be. At this point I am wondering if I really even want the job. Has anyone ever had to wait this long to find out what their pay would be? I didn't even know what my status would be until I talked to the DON. I really want to work in a hospital not a nursing home but I am trying to give it the benefit of the doubt because I really have no experience except for clinicals so I can't knock anything until I try it. I may have a job in a hospital too because I am supposed to call the Nurse Recruiter back once I have my sit date which I should have within the next 2 weeks. So, does anyone have any comments, suggestions, words of wisdom? I will take critiscism if that is all you have too. I really just want to know what my pay would be I can wait for orientation and everything else but seriously.
  2. I just graduated as an RN myself and waiting to take the boards. Here is my 2 cents. I didn't vote but just giving my opinion. Being a new nurse I don't think I could ever take a PRN position because I feel in the begining you need consistency. I have 2 small children as well and wanted to do nights because I figured I would work while they slept and still be able to spend time with them. There is the issue with lack of sleep but I thought you would get used to that over time. I don't want to work 3 12 hr days because I literally would not see them during that time. I now have to opportunity to possibly work 8 hr shifts and I am thinking that really might be the best. We can work 4 or 5 days a week, it is our choice. This isn't my dream job either but I am getting experience. I know that kids grow up so quick but you also have to think about what you would be able to provide her if you continued working full time and what you wouldn't be able to provide her going PRN. If you can afford to go PRN and make less money and feel you have achieved enough experience or only want to continue doing PRN work then go for it. Otherwise I would stick with full time at least for a little bit longer. Good luck on making a decision whichever way you choose.
  3. It is one thing to work in a group with your teacher and a completely different thing to work one on one with a nurse. When we did clinicals I felt basically like a glorified CNA. Always had to find my teachers before really doing anything, only a couple students would pass meds, etc, etc. When I precepted everything made sense. I really felt like a nurse. We couldn't hang blood or blood products either and we couldn't do IV push but I really felt like I was on my own with someone at my side to make sure I did things right and to answer questions. I am so sorry that you won't be doing actual precepting as I felt it was a wonderful learning tool and made it all feel real.
