WOW!!! I am 34 and starting my nursing journey as well! I plan to become a CNA in 2013 so that I can work in a hospital or LTC facility while I work on my nursing school prereqs. Nursing has been calling me for quite some time and I am finally ready to answer! I will be giving up great benefits and a pretty comfy salary, but the cubicle, office life is killing me slowly. I am 34 and have decided to pursue a career in Nursing. I am working on my RN prereqs and plan to take a CNA course in early 2013 so I can work in the field while taking my classes. I am so impatient and just want to taking my RN classes already! Good luck to you!
If it makes you feel any better, you are not alone! I am 34 also and making a career change to nursing as well. I am starting from SCRATCH. I am not happy in my current job. The thing that I'm struggling with is leaving a very comfy salary and great benefits. There will be some temporary sacrifices but I know it will all pay off in the long run. My mother reminded me that you are only too old to something when you are dead. If you don't do it, you will always regret not trying.
Let me put it like this, when I went to the emergency room for my first ever kidney stone in June, I wouldn't have cared if the Hunchback of Notre Dame was the one bringing me that demerol drip! So, no, I don't think your looks are a big deal. As a patient all I cared about was being in the care of knowledgeable, empathetic, caregivers. Keep being the you that you are
