You could also try a level 2C NICU because they will have higher acuity babies (vents, CPAP for short term) gain that experience then do your level 3. I'm just starting the level 3 course and I'm super blessed that I have experience so I understand more what's being said

I'm a Canadian NICU nurse and we have 2 men in our NICU and one who floats NICU and Paeds!

I've seen balloon races, where you try to blow a balloon up as fast as possible in a race against the nurse or another kid doing IS though with most places banning latex you might have to do blowing up a glove :)

We have pods and the charge assigns who's in it but once in the pods the off going nurses decide who has the assignment usually it's who's had the baby last/ recently

For IVs we use a stat lock which just fits over the hub and holds it in place, then we use tape to hold the arm to the board. For NG/OG and O2 we use hypafix which works well unless there's a lot of droll or moisture for the most part it does the job

I work with 2 males in my NICU, and can say I don't see why a male can't work there. There are some moms who may be uncomfortable with a male while trying to breast feed but you'll find females with a preference for a female nurse anywhere you work. If you want to do it, I say go for it!

Just finished my 8th day as a new grad in the NICU and came out feeling like I'm never going to learn everything I need to be a good NICU nurse and that I really didn't deserve this opportunity. Anyone else feeling this way?

I did work until 4th year only part time doing 8 hours a week but sometimes that was crazy. Though they've changed the program since I first started so I can't say anymore if it's manageable. The workload can be pretty heavy especially in 1st and 3rd years as I found that was where you'll have your largest chunk of learning to do and the curve can be pretty steep. But overall it really teaches time management and autonomy since a lot of it is self-directed and depending on your tutor you could be looking up everything for a case in class or just a specific piece.

I'm a new grad nurse in the NICU so I don't know a whole lot but here's what I can tell you 1) it's so nerve wracking the first time you go to give a baby a needle (at least for me it was) but if you know how to give one to adults then the principals are the same for a neonate. I haven't started an IV yet so I couldn't tell you on that front. 2) I was told that I need to get my Perinatal certification as well as take STABLE and neonatal resuscitation as well as being an RN, but if you go in as a new grad they're pretty open to letting you work for a bit then getting your cert. in some places

Hi there! I didn't go to Mohawk/Mac but did the Conestoga/Mac program and loved it! Going to a college makes it a bit nicer because the class is smaller so you get to know your classmates better, Mohawk is nice because a lot of your classes are with Mac so you won't notice as much the difference between programs. Hello everyone, I'm a newly graduated RN who will be starting my new graduate guarantee in September working in the NICU/pediatrics/ special care nursery. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to expect, what courses I should be looking into taking, as well as what textbooks/ journals you would suggest I look into. I really appreciate any advice that can be provided

I don't know in this situation but I have a family friend who is Caucasian as is her husband at the time but their baby was darker than either of them. Turns out this friend had a great-grandparent who was African American but no one had really been aware of this until after the baby was born and questions were raised

My dilemma is that I received an offer from a medical floor but I've recently done an interview for a maternal-child floor and have one coming up for an OR, both areas I would love to work in. While I don't really want to work on a medical floor, I also don't want to cause myself to not be able to find work because I didn't take the offer. So I'm just really unsure on whether to take a sure thing or throw caution to the wind and hope that an area I would prefer to work in hires me. Thoughts from experience?
