Hi! So I am a new grad and have just recently got a job in an acute/long term rehab facility. I really want/need to work in a hospital. I need that atmosphere and experience. I have my father who is a vet from the army and has suggested to me that I check out the air force and the navy for nursing. So I have called both and in the air force they said that I would def be deployed somewhere during my term, and the navy said it was optional. I have no idea what to do .. I mean I have also looked into moving to other states that hopefully have a better job market than here in MA. Please someone give me some advice!! Thank you so much!

Where did you get a job in the ICU?? I mean which state?? Yea I mean a friend of mine graduated in 2009 and got a job right out of school, In a large hospital in MA in the ICU. I really am willing to move -- almost want to at this point. I have also considered the air force or navy .. Has anyone had / heard anything about nursing in these areas?? Thanks for all your ideas guys :).

See that's what I'm worried about now.. I have a job that I don't like and that isn't the type of experience I want. I am totally willing to move, I just don't know when? I'm still within the 3 month probationary period and I'm dreading waiting an entire year. What do I do?!??

Heyy! So I also am a new grad and my past jobs at hospitals include CnA and an anesthesia technician at one of the top hospitals in the country located in Boston (which is where I am from FYI). The job market in MA is brutal and I have a great resume, references, etc and still nothing. All postings say "require or prefer 1-3 2-5 etc years experience". But how can I get the experience without the job?! I'm such a hard worker and good nurse it is frustrating I feel like I can't prove that. My first job is at an acute/long term rehab facility. I see that I am one of the few that has my BSN and I am really trying to make the best of this position. I mean 20 pts and if someone calls out no mandating = like 30 pts and unsafe care. On the acute units there are more PRN meds, nursing notes to write, etc. Also I really feel part of a team, I haven't been there long and have already made a hospice pt so much more comfortable. My concern/question is how long is the MiNIMUM amount of time that I should stay here before going to try getting a job at a hospital ?? My overall goal is to work in critical care, possibly become a medic part time for the experience and excitement, and I work best in high paced emergent environments. I just dont know what to do because I feel like I worked so so so hard to graduate Magna Cum Laude from college with a bachelors degree and I want to start on my "dream pathway". Does anyone have any advice/comments???

I live in the Boston area with my BSN and graduated very high in my class. I looked for like 7-8 months before I got lucky and met a nurse manager at the hair salon !! Haha.. I have considered moving out of state bc it is so bad here I mean I sent out 90 applications and not a single call back !! And I have worked in several health care roles for like 7 years. I would def secure a job before you move here hoping to find something. Newton is really nice tho I used to work at Newton Wellesley hospital so I got some idea of the population. I think that home care here is like more places but I suggest looking up the company online. Hope this helps!

Hi ! Wow it's funny how much you sound like me. My father passed away when I was a sophomore in nursing school and I had two other set backs while in school giving me a grand total of 6 years to get my BSN!! But honestly once I got my cert. in the mail it was all worth it. I was out of school for like 7 months and sent out 90 yea 90 applications and heard nothing. And I have worked in healthcare as a CNA and as an anesthesia technician in one of the top hospitals in the country. Now I work at a long term/short term rehab skilled nursing facility which I am not happy about. I would love to work in a hospital setting and keep my skills sharp, but where I live in MA the job market is brutal!!! My best advice: make yourself more marketable. If you are BLS certified, get your ACLS certification. I drove 6+ hours to get certified in IV therapy (they don't teach us in school and in most hospitals around here on med Surg floors, just ER and pre-op ). Hope this helps at least a little :).
