Hey there! Congrats on the move! Welcome to cali! I don't know if you found a place yet but I wanted to let you know that Newport Beach is a little more on the expensive side usually ranging 1500-1900/month. You might want to look into South Coast Metro area. It's in Costa Mesa so it's a bit cheaper (avg 1200/month) but it's in the nicer part of costa mesa. It's by the mall and the freeway so there's lots of shopping an easy accessibility. I'm thinking you got a job at Hoag since you're asking about Newport. South Coast is still very close to Hoag. ALSO, There's huntington beach (my personal favorite) which is right next to Newport and has more reasonable pricing. Happy hunting! I hope you find a great place.

Sorry if I put this in the wrong spot... I'm super new I'm not a new grad yet. I am just about to start my prereqs. I have a family to support, so ideally I would like to have a job at least while I finish my prereqs. I would love to end up in ICU (I know what you're thinking but I thrive on crazy.. no seriously... you should meet my family) Anyways, my question is; If I get my Emergency Medical Tech (EMT) certification and do that part-time while I go to school do you think that would help prepare me for ICU or help me get a job in ICU when I graduate or is my time better spent trying to volunteer in an ICU. We could get by without my income if volunteering would be the better choice but it is nice to be able to afford a night out with the hubby sometimes. Any input would be wonderful.

Hey there. I've not worked at Hoag since I'm still in school but I live in Newport and have volunteered and been a patient at Hoag. Ritzy peeps are not the only ones that frequent the hospital. Hoag is on the border of Newport and Costa Mesa. Costa Mesa probably has the largest homeless population in Orange County and the homeless peeps are at the hospital a lot. As a patient, Hoag is the ONLY hospital I've ever been to that is good at making you feel like your turn is coming in the ER so the patients seem to be somewhat at ease while they are waiting. The staff is so friendly at Hoag that after I gave birth to my twins I was compelled to volunteer. Also, they might have told you but just in case they did not, there is no smoking anywhere at Hoag (not even in the parking lot). If you're a smoker you have to walk out to the main street.
