  1. one more comment:--according to ill. board of nursing (ill. dept of professional regulation) as long as u pay the fee & do the c.e.u's for lic. renewal, that's all u need for work. they don't require u do anything else. that's what they told me when I talked to them, being told by prospective employers I needed a refresher course before I was employable after being out of nursing for a while. take my advice & just stay working. don't stop. once u do, anything after 5 yrs of working u will be so out of date with whats going on in nursing, and will be required by employers to take a lpn refresher course to get the current theory and the clinicals.
  2. if you have already written state boards u should be fine. in s.c. all u need is a current license (Illinois) unencumbered. but u will have to get a s.c. license. it will be about $60 for that. u need the criminal backround check done, fill out s.c. paperwork & wait for the ok from s.c that you have a license with them. ( I did this). s.c. requires 30 c.e.u.s to renew license & its renewable every 2 yrs I think in april. u will need current work exp. to get work. without that u will have to take a refresher course which is available at Greenville technical institute. Illinois has no lpn refresher courses that are college based. 2 online courses are avail.-one thru NAPNES, and the other thru south Dakota univ. which is accepted in sc. but with these 2 u must get a contract with someone for the clinicals. u cant sign up for either of those programs without that agreement. but both of those are much cheaper than Greenville tech. program. the pay in s.c is much lower than here in Illinois. my suggestion to you is,,,,never go inactive on yr license. its like ur throwing that license away. u would have to go back to school all over again if u decide u want to work as a nurse again. work......even if its only 1 wkend day a month. its still work exp. without work exp. u wont get anyone to hire you. just some sage advice from someone who didn't work after school & now i'm finding it very hard to get back in. the online course is there. .....no one in Illinois will contract with me for clinicals. so I wont be working as a nurse. wish I knew this a long time ago. I would have worked. now I need to be working & cant get the work bc of the stupid decisions I made to not work.
  3. I agree. while going on for your RN i would make it a BSN. the trend/recommendations for entry level nursing is the BSN. it will take longer but u will be done. unless u decide to go further. i am an LPN & have not worked for 15 yrs & now need a refresher course to go back to work. there are no refresher courses near me. so i have to decide what i'm going to do.
  4. Career Trends for LPNs | Healthcare News, Information and Career Advice advice according to this article, lpns need to get certifications , the more the better for employment. gerontology is the trend in certifications. the site for lpn refresher online course give info on certifications. they have ones for I.V. also. its worth checking into for all LPN's
  5. on Nurse.com, i did a c.e.u that was on this topic. BSN WILL BE THE MINIMUM LEVEL OF ENTRY INTO NURSING. they couldnt say what will happen with ADN RN'S & LPNS. this being 2014 i'm writing this, looks like all ADN RN's & LPN's will have to decide to upgrade or get out of nursing period or go into some other vein of medical work. my question is, .........whats next?......LPN's phased out of LTC? it could happen!!!!!! when i was in nursing school (vocational prog;) the talk was introducing PCT's (patient care tecnicians) that have cna, lpn & some rn skills as scope of practice. there are some places today that have those positions. so there is some confusion on what is & is not the truth & what places hire what. i think it should be more clear on who does what so this confusion doesnt keep going on, no one really knows whats going on. by 2016 we will know what min. level, entry is for nursing. before that, its nothing but confusion & division for discussion.
  6. i wish this topic could be put to rest with the TRUTH of whats going on. from what i have read, for the last few yrs (now being 2014) BSN is going to be the minimum level of nursing. so what happens to the ADN RN's & LPN's, i dont know. most Dr. offices & clinics want CMA'S or N.P.'s, so where the ADN RN's & LPNs will work is a question. i did a c.e.u. on Nurse.com & one of them was this issue. it was said that the min. level of nursing WILL BE a BSN. they couldnt say what would happen to the LPN. I'm interested in this topic b/c i am an LPN. just b/c this topic of phasing out LPN's has been out there for many yrs. & disclaimed doesnt mean that some day it will happen. it sounds to me like its being implemented all across the country. in 2016 we will see what min. level of nursing is. before that, all the speculation is just division among nurses & the discusssion of it.
  7. as of july 2012, i was in the silver cross to see someone & the RN who was assigned to the person i was seeing had on a print scrub top & solid color (pink) pants.
  8. may 28 by malecna87 may 28 by malecna87 a member since may '11. posts: 25 likes: 4 awards: dear fellow allnurses, i am sure this has been addressed many times before, but i wanted to start a new thread in hopes of finding some current/new information regarding whether to get an adn or bsn in illinois, specifically in the chicago land area. i am currently in this complicated and frustrating situation where i have been accepted to both an adn and an accelerated bsn program and am not sure which one to choose. if i go the adn route, tuition would be much cheaper (less than 10k) but i will finish in 2 years with an adn. if i take the bsn route, i will finish in 16 months but i will be drowned with around 48k in debt, plus 20k i already have from my previous degree. i really want to go the bsn route since it is shorter and that is my ultimate goal, to obtain my bsn. i know there are numerous rn to bsn programs out there that would be a lot cheaper but would take longer. my question to you all is this whether you would take the adn or bsn route and why? also, i have heard many stories (mostly on here) about new grads not being able to find work. is this true for both adn and bsn new grads? i honestly would go with the adn route if i knew i would be able to get a job after i graduated and passed the nclex whether it be in a hospital, ltc or home care is not an issue for me at this point. i just want to know if i would be able to get an rn position with an adn. any advice would be greatly appreciated! my advice would be, since your aim for the bsn, depends on how old u are & how much time u can spend getting it. if you need to get your adn first,(b/c of money issues) then get that & when u start working as an adn rn, (youll have $ to go back for your bsn). i posted here before that i completed a c.e. on www.nurse.com a c.e. about entrylevel to practice. its been talked about & debated according to this c.e since the 1960's but here in illinois, some hospitals are already telling their adn rn's & lpn's to get their bsn withing 6 yrs or they will be let go. so this is already being implemented even tho it hasnt officially been the accepted nursing level acedemically. so my advice is to all lpns & adn rn's,.....get your bsn then u will be able to get a job.
  9. jobs are hard to find for 'experienced' lpns. i think its the economy that is effecting this. more people needing work & not enough openings. the employers can be 'real choosy' who they hire. all i can offer for advice is when you apply, just emphasize your a new graduate with the most current skills & would be up on the latest nursing knowledge. my second piece of advice is, immediatly go back to school for your BSN. i recently completed a c.e. on www.nurse.com for entry-level to practic debate. there is talk(has been according to this website) since the mid 1960's to make entry-level to practice a BSN. my point is this, here in Illinois some hospitals are already telling thier lpns and ADN's to go back to get their BSN within 6 yrs or they will let go. so its already happening without this being officially accepted by all nursing agenices, etc. i would say, if your wanting to stay in nursing, then u should go for your BSN.
  10. Hi all, just wondering if any of the LPN's on this forum have taken the online NAPNES LPN refresher course lately. i am very seriously contemplating it. i would like to find out what is included in the theory (online) portion of the course. also would like to know how the clinical portion went. ( i am in illinois)
  11. MarkAnAz. read my post about entry-level to practice c.e.u i took on nurse.com. (lpn programs).
  12. Re: ADN's & LPN's not able to find work. i just completed a C.E.U. on Nurse.com. It was about entry-level to practice nursing. the push i believe has been going on to hire only BSN RN'S even tho this hasnt been adopted officially yet. Any ADN RN will have to get the BSN to be able to work. The article said at this point they dont know what will be the fate of LPN's. I think we are already seeing the evidence of that. I believe LPN's will be told to get their BSN RN or get trained in some other area of the health field. I believe LPN cirriuculum will eventually be eliminated. so anyone who is now an LPN, go get your BSN or start training for another healthcare career. don't wait till the axe falls.
  13. Hi, have been looking for a place to connect with other lpns'. glad to hear you are working! i am not. have been out of the field for many years (personal issues). i regret not staying working all these years despite my personal issues. it has cost me dearly in the work world. now i am looking at having to go thru a lpn refresher course to be updated on all skills so i am marketable. where i live there are no college based lpn refresher courses within close distance. am seriously concidering going thru the NAPNES lpn refresher course online. i am older & don't know if my age will affect my getting work even after i get thru the refresher course. may i ask what you were taught in your LPN courses? i went thru my schooling back in 1984-85.
