In Baltimore, we have a lab section for both Health Assessment (Nurs 333) and Fundamentals (Nurs 304) (which we call Fundies). These take place in our simulation labs. In Health Assessment lab you work on one body system each week, learning how to perform the exam and document your findings. The point is to learn how to do a comprehensive head to toe assessment, which you will eventually demonstrate on a standardized patient (who is an actor) in the exam room simulation lab. You will also have various times where you will have to perform things like vital signs or an assessment on one body system leading up to the head to toe final so you get experience with the skills and lessen your nerves on performing these skills on real people. You will also have little homework exercises to do each week. The grades you get in this lab will be combined with your grades in Health Assessment lecture to give you one Health Assessment grade. In Fundies you basically learn all of the CNA and basic nursing skills. So you start with things like bed baths, transfers, and wound care and then move on to things like medication administration, catheters, and tracheostomy care. At the end of the semester you get your CNA license so long as you get a C or above in the Fundies course. There isn't really any homework assignments you need to turn in but you will have to do online quizzes most weeks related to the lab and then brief papers at a couple of points. Like Health Assessment you will have checkpoints where you have to perform skills. These are called validations. I don't want to overload people with information too much but in these you walk into a room, are handed a scenario which will include between 1 and 3 random skills you have learned and then you are videotaped doing these skills. Your lab teacher reviews the video and lets you know if you passed or failed. We don't get grades for these and honestly it's not a big deal if you have to revalidate other than having to spend practice time in an open lab and then the 30 or so minutes itself to do the revalidation. For me I had both of these labs on the same day of the week with one for two hours in the morning and the other for two hours in the afternoon. The number of people in lab with you varies depending on what group you're in (it's always small like less than 10) but you will be with the same group of people for both labs for the whole semester and then likely for clinicals first semester too. These labs are the same for every student with the only difference being time and instructor(s). Some people chose to register for a group that had Health Assessment lab on Mondays after our Health Assessment lecture and then Fundies lab on Tuesdays after Fundies and Research lectures. For these people it meant longer days but one day less a week of having to come to school for scheduled class. This week is our first week of clinicals. Once clinicals start you will not go to labs anymore. For some people clinical is on the same day they had lab, for others it's on a different day. Many people are with the same group of students and the same instructor they had for their labs. Also, clinical sites and groups are assigned to you just for first semester, but like I said you are usually at least with the same group of people, you just don't get to pick where you go. Starting about a month into school we also had what is called communication module, which is a component of Fundies, for 4 consecutive weeks on Monday afternoons. There are several sections of this that they will divide the class up into and give you your group once school has started (these groups are around 20 students). The communication teachers are different for each section but other than that the same information is taught, we all write the same papers, and are graded on the same rubrics. This seminar is where you will learn how to communicate with patients. After the last week you will sign up for a time to do a patient interview in the exam room simulation labs on standardized patients. This is another pass/fail type of thing but I'm pretty sure most people pass because they prepare you very well. If someone did fail though you would just have to do if again but it wouldn't affect your grade at all. That ended up being a lot of information but just in case there were other people who were interested in knowing how things worked I put it all out there!

Hey guys, I was accepted last semester and ended up choosing a different school, but I saw this thread and just wanted to let you know they do still offer the WHC scholarship. You'll eventually get an email to apply for it (I don't remember when exactly), and then you email an essay to the coordinator at WHC. If you choose to apply for WHC you go to an information session and then meet and greet (which was a wine and cheese party for us haha) on Friday at GU with everyone and then Saturday you take a tour of WHC and do your interview with all of the other people who applied to WHC.

I'll be coming from the opposite end near hunt valley for the light rail.As for scholarships I know they were offering merit scholarships that you would have been told you got during your phone call. If you weren't offered one of those you might want to look for scholarships from other sources like the state of Maryland

malinois, I plan on taking the light rail too! I'm a little nervous about the walk to the school from the Lexington Market stop though (w/c I think is the closest one).

But I'm sure they'll update the website soon and that that will give you definitive information

I'm not sure about the date of orientation but for the forms my letter said I had to return my enrollment form within two weeks and that my other forms had to be in by orientation. The calendar on their website said classes start January 23 so I'm guessing orientation is either earlier that week or the week before.

How do I pay my deposit online? Do I need to wait for my letter to come in the mail first?

Yay I'm so happy for everyone that's gotten in so far! I cannot wait to meet my Baltimore classmates in January! I was accepted to a few others programs before this but my excitement really didn't compare to that of getting in to UMB. When they called they told me they would be sending out packets in the near future...I'm anxious to get started with everything that needs to get done and feel that getting this will make everything more real. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for everyone still waiting to hear!

Hi Ames,I noticed someone had asked your question on another thread so I though I'd answer it for you. You can apply with Cs in prerequisites but have to get Bs or higher in all classes you're currently in regardless of whether or not they're prerequisites. I think the only thing that could disqualify someone related to the prereqs aside from grades is if they took one of the sciences online because their website says those ones must be done in a classroom.

Did they say most applicants have those scores or most accepted applicants? I would honestly be pretty surprised if most of the people who apply have scores reaching into the 90s. For the people that are worried about their scores I've heard of successful applicants who got scores in the mid 70s, even with gpas around 3.5. Who really knows what this competition pool looks like though.

From reading some of the other threads it seems like anything less than a 70 can hurt your chances and anything above is better but doesn't necessarily help your chances. The Teas was hard! I walked out of mine feeling like I didn't do that well and just ended up getting incredibly lucky.

Did you apply for the BSN program or CNL program? I'm pretty sure only CNL has interviews (unless they are changing something for this admissions cycle). If that's the case I would imagine you would hear sometime in October about an interview date and would hear back probably mid-November about a decision.

Has anyone spoken with someone from the school to find out when exactly we might be hearing back? From looking at past threads it seems like definitely not until November, but I'm wondering if now that all the applications are if they have an idea about whether it might be early or late November.

AmesRT, Thanks for the info! I've never heard of the 20 suggestion before. I already am getting anxious waiting for my admissions decision! I want to go to UMB so bad and don't know how I'm going to be able to wait until November for a decision. I've been accepted at two other schools and I was excited about them at first, but now I almost feel like I only want to go to UMB. They're really great schools but far away and I'm scared of moving across the country by myself. They're also accelerated programs and I just finished my first bachelors in three years so I almost feel like I've had enough of 18+ semester course loads and also want breaks to be able to get externships. I'll have to wait and see when I get my decision but right now I'm feeling like if I don't get in I'd rather just not start school in January and reapply to UMB for the fall. I wonder how many applications they ended up getting for the spring; I know there was a surge in applications for most schools over the past few years but I wonder if it has leveled off yet or if it is continuing to increase each semester.

I had been planning on taking the light rail in and then walking to school if I got accepted, but now I'm nervous! I remember going into the city in high school and walking around with friends and never really having a problem, but now I wonder if that's because we pretty much just stayed in the Inner Harbor area. Would other people who have more experience with the UMB area recommend driving and parking in the garage and walking over rather than walking all the way from the light rail near like Lexington Market?

I also only had a few weeks to prepare but really made use of the time I had. I did as many practice problems as I could get my hands on. Like some of the others have said, study websites are really beneficial. I practiced a lot on english websites (IDing simple sentences, practicing commonly misspelled words) and made sure I had a good grasp of how the testing company defined things in the reading section (main idea, theme, exc). I really thought I understood those things before I started studying but the practice tests made me realize that the test is kind of peculiar in some ways. I thought the math section was pretty basic and even though I haven't had a math class in almost four years I ended up studying for that section the least. Just make sure you know what each type of graph is used for, are able to do (very) basic algebra, and know how to do the common types of word problems you can find on other threads on this site. Also be sure to learn roman numerals because you probably will have one problem on your test that asks you to convert to them. The science section for me was difficult to study for because I haven't taken a college chemistry class yet. I too used khanacademy to learn and review basics, and made sure I had a good understanding of periodic table trends, what an acid/base is, exc. The McGraw-Hill book went really into depth on physics but my test only had one question related to physics that asked me about kinetic energy. Above all though I would say to get in as much timed practice as you can; I was scoring in the low to mid 80s on my practice tests when I first started taking them and ended up scoring in the mid 90s on my actual teas after all of the practice.

Did you write a good personal statement and have you finished all of your prereqs? I feel like those things could definitely help your application. 3.77 is really strong though! Everything that I've heard about UMB seems to indicate that they really look at the whole applicant, so I wouldn't be bummed out because you feel like your numbers might not be where you think they should be.
