Being Gay and a Male Nursing Student
I find it hard to be myself, and still live down those stereotypical "flamboyant" expectations of the girls/women I find myself in classes with. Nursing school will be difficult, but as I go to a Junior College (population of about 6,000 students) the odds are that I will more than likely have known a few of the enrolled from before this semester. If that is the case, then I hope to become friends with a few and participate in group studies... If my last Nursing School experience is any indication of what I have to look forward to then I will not make many friends or participate in group studies. I will be left to my own devices. That is a sucky realization, but in the end I am doing this for myself and hopefully to make the lives of the children I plan on having (surrogacy or adoption) better. Grunt, Grin, & bare it all.... It will be worth it they say.

Ages of male nursing students?
I'm 21, will be 22 a few weeks after I start LPN school. All goes as planned, I'll be 22 when I graduate. I'm one of only 4 in my class, and the others are in their 20's like me, with one in his mid 30's probably.

Fall 2012 lpn classes
1. August 15th - Jones County Junior College 2. August - July; Monday - Thursday 8:30-3:20 & Fridays 8:30-3:00 (clinical days start at 7:00 & end usually around 2ish I was told). 3. I was an RN student, with only 3 weeks left in my first semester & due to some unforseen circumstances I had to withdraw (in good standing). Now I'm ready to get some sort of Nursing Degree under my belt because honestly 2 years as a CNA has shown me that this is NOT where I wanna stay. I've wanted to become a nurse since I was 8 & my mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. This LPN program gives me the leverage I need to be on my way to an RN degree & all the while I can work while gaining experience. 4. My school gives out an expected Gross Cost of: $5700, give or take a few dollars for uniforms (extra sizes & stethescope brands). I've started off the semester with an out of pocket expense of, wait for it: $350 (that's books, [i was lucky enough to borrow a good deal], scrubs for regular class days [already had some because I'm a CNA], a planner/organizer, and uniforms. Only expenses I have left are my CPR recert in December & alterations to my uniforms.

LPN School - Fall2012
Thanks so much for the words of encouragement. I guess where my downfall comes is that I'm a male, and I don't see many pursuing the LPN route. Those that are LPN's are only that so they can pursue their RN as soon as they graduate. The floor experience for me (approx a year) would be time enough to allow the waters to calm and for me to be able to pursue my degree further. Sounds logical in my mind.

LPN School - Fall2012
I start LPN school in the Fall. I was wondering if others out there have found themselves in my boat. I started RN school, made it through all but the last 3 weeks of the first semester & was forced to withdraw (in good standing). Now when I think about starting LPN, or discuss it with my sister (an RN) it seems I feel sort of a failure. Does the LPN, then RN route seem less conventional? Can a person succeed better at one route than the other? Does this type of alternative make me less likely to continue to RN school? Any ideas?
