MGH Direct-Entry Nursing 2014
It's definitely hard to hold a part time job without your grades taking a dip. Med/surg and patho are very demanding. Biobehavioral also requires group case studies that can be time consuming.

Sanamax – The schedule during the first semester is pretty busy! You’ll have classes on Monday (9am-4pm), Tuesday (Clinical – 7am-1pm), Wenesday (9am-12pm), Thursday (off), Friday (Clinical 7am-3pm). In addition, you will also have an online Pathophysiology course (3 credits worth). Because the class is 100+ students, they split the class in half for all the courses and class times can vary based on which section you are in. Mecks625 – You can start working as an RN the spring or summer of your second year, depending on when you take your NCLEX. After talking with other students, it doesn’t sound like anyone (that I’ve spoke with) had trouble finding a job. The institute does a great job at emailing us too if they know of positions available for private home care. The fact that the BSN isn’t offered until the end of the program has Not affected those students in getting a job. Pmg1990 – Sorry, I don’t know the statistics of the peds program. I’m sure if you contact Veronica K. (coordinator for the specialty), she’ll have the numbers for you! Good luck to everyone applying!

MGH Direct-Entry Nursing 2014
I love the program so far! It can be frustrating at times. Sometimes, administration is disorganized – ie. they will discover scheduling conflicts on the 1st day of classes, the wrong textbook list will be posted, they’ll post an outdated syllabus, etc. The first week of the semester is a little rough because they will be working out the kinks to the schedule. As far as classes and faculty, with the exception of 1 or 2 faculty, they’re great! Very friendly, approachable, and only want you to do well. The toughest (time-demanding) classes you will take in the fall are: Med/Surg I and Pathophysiology. They are absolutely do-able, but just require a lot of time studying. You’ll be shocked how much you learned in one semester! History of nursing will be your easy class with weekly discussion posts. Clinicals: You have 2 clinicals your first semester (Psych & Med Surg). I was lucky to have both at MGH. Everyone will have their med surg clinical at MGH. MGH IHP students have a wonderful reputation – so nurses on the unit are Very welcoming towards us. The clinical instructors are Amazing! You’ll spend a lot of time writing your care plans (for med surg) at first, but you really get a lot out of them! You start to remember patients and their pathophysiology. As for care plans at MGH IHP, the faculty require that you show up the day before your med surg clinical and review the patient’s chart (learn why they were admitted, hospital course & treatment, and how you plan on helping them). This in addition to writing up your actual care plan will take a significant amount of time. I’m not sure if every school does it the same way. They accept about 100-115 students. All of my classmates have been friendly and supportive! The competition among your classmates stops at this program! Everyone realizes that there is far too much reading to do by yourself. Find a group of students to split up the chapters and share notes. Last year, some students got wait listed and were offered a seat in the class if they accepted a different specialty. Unfortunately, these students were misled when administration told them that they may be able to switch specialties later in the program. Just something to keep in mind if you fall in this case!

Vanderbilt Pre-Specialty (for non-RNs) MSN 2013
Is it true that students are responsible for finding their own preceptors and clinical placements? I'm trying to decide between Vandy and MGH.

If you were set on FNP and you have a backup school to attend, I think you should try to get a refund for your application.

Vanderbilt Grad Entry 2013
They expect to see movement after the first wave of acceptance letters go out and some people decline their offer. They couldn't tell me how many people are on the list or where I was ranked. They did say there are 21 spots for the prespecialty class.
