  1. I'm considering a position as as an OR nurse for an ENT only minor surgeries (pre-op, intra-op and post-op) , how does this compare to L&D OR, as far as skills, common meds, stress levels, in your opinion?
  2. What is the role of the RN in a Medical Marijuana clinic? Please mention what state you are in. Thanks.
  3. Hello OP, congrats on finding your passion, I say go for it and I truly believe naturopathy is the foundation for good health. Although I do not have answers for you I hope you them. Best wishes and hope you are in good health.
  4. I think my post wasn't clear. My apologies. It is a clinic run by the State Health Department focusing on the treatment/prevention of STI's in women , TIA means Thanks in Advance
  5. Seeking info, comments, opinions, experiences, on a day in the life of a mobile clinic nurse. I have not found much info here or the net. It's not Mobile, Alabama nor is it a nurse that travels from home to home. It is a a clinic in a large /bus focusing on treatment and prevention of STI's. TIA
  6. I think you would rock it! Just study a bit before hand, the common meds, emergency situations etc. Your biggest trouble would probably the charting aspect, but that would be a bit troublesome when transitioning from any specialty to another. I think you may even have an advantage. Sometimes us (L&D) nurses catch our own babies and many L&D nurses are terrified of babies. :) I think you will be great.
  7. I'm not certain if it's a reaction to temporary conditions, Maybe it is, I hope not. It is the majority of the nurses sad to say. But the ones that are not like this are so amazing, and kind and patient.
  8. That's exactly why I brought up the issue of a hard life, was expecting comments about how nurses become desensitized in a way. It's just odd that I see surgeons, physicians and other nurses that do not have this attitude. I wonder what makes some people turn out this way. Sure they may joke about, poo, blood and guts in private. But it almost seems evil, that they laugh and are slow to tend to a woman who is in fear, vomiting, trembling and begging to be helped.
  9. Please reason my post entitled New Nuse in L&D is this normal. I am so scared of my future being like this. What are your future plans?
  10. Thank you kindly for your response, I don't know what to do, and gives me comfort kowing this is not the norm. You have given me HOPE!
  11. That's a pretty long rant about me. And it's funny that you made an assessment about me. How do you know for certain that I am part of the ME Me generation? There is no way that I feel superior or tougher than these nurses. If anything I can learn so much from them. But I do not expect handouts. I come home and study my behind off. I do feel that this is wrong and I have come here for advice. And no, that is not how you get through a hectic day by delaying care because you are too busy on social media, and then making fun of a patient that is in immense pain! Have you ever been in labor?Do you realize what the outcome could have been? Do you realize that there is another life/patient in her that you cannot see? (I would start a new paragraph but I'm on my phone and I don't know how) Whether the nurse gets paid or not to precept me it is not the issue. Quality Patient care should be provided. If I am wrong feeling that this was a dangerous situation for all mothers and babies that day please let me know and I will move forward . Thanks
  12. I am a new grad (RN) with no hospital experience aside from nursing school. This is my experience on the L&D floor I am in. I've come to you all because I don't know what is normal in the healthcare setting. So I am often left alone. On half of my first day orienting as Baby Nurse, I was left alone. My preceptor would leave and I could not find her. On my second day as baby nurse, she called out and I was ALONE.I told them that I did not feel safe doing this and they told me They would not leave me alone and assist me. The charge nurse stayed with me for the first few seconds of life and then would leave. We are always swamped. Our director does not allow the staff to call safe harbor. Which I heard was illegal. Instead she gets on the floor to "Help" although she doesn't have much experience and needs a lot of help, which takes away time from other nurses. I have tried to seek help and additional resources from my nurse educator but she has been working on the floor swamped with patients and doesn't have time to help me. During my first few weeks we were so swamped that my preceptor would often just take over and I couldn't really do much. MY first few weeks consisted of hemmorhages, stat sections and mothers who were rushed in transitioning. Tensions are high, everyone is always yelling at each other in front of patients. etc. What baffles me is the conversations that go on. One nurse thought it was hilarious that she didn't help a triage patient in time and she almost gave birth on the floor. They constantly make fun of patients especially the ones that go natural they say things like ughhh "Why are they screaming they need to shut the ***** up"! They were disgusted that an incontinent patient was pregnant. They said some of the meanest things about her and how disgusting she was for wearing diapers and having sex. When I ask for help they just stare at me and sit on their behinds and ignore me. I don't understand it, never have I worked in a place with such insensitive, grumpy, depressed people. Is this the way nursing is everywhere? I have thick skin, but I will never find pleasure in another person's pain. They gossip about patients in front of other patients and families. Once they ware talking about how they would abandon their patients especially the epidural patients in the time of a disaster, active shooter or fire. This conversation was going on at the nurses station with families walking in the halls. They were not joking either. I am just so disgusted, I have thick skin and I may not know much about the healthcare field but I have lived a very hard life and I have lived through things probably most of these nurses haven't. I am professional and compassionate. SO tell me, is this the norm.
  13. 1st step: go to Nursing Orientation. An advisor will not provide you with accurate information, and Nursing advisors are not available to non-nursing or pre-nursing students. During the semester, orientation is held at 1pm every Wednesday. That could have changed. If I am not mistaken, you should have all of your science COMPLETED prior to application. However, there is a score by which your acceptance will be determined. GPA is a fraction and so is the number of times you take a science course . It would be best to gor to orientation and take notes. Best of Luck.
  14. Your GPA is only a fraction of your total score to enter into the program. The total score is also based on the amount of times you had to take A&P I and II, and microbiology. I believe you are ok with a 3.0. I have a 3.8. Contrary to what Nancy white said, you will not be accepted if your science courses are not completed. She misinformed so many students. The core MUST BE COMPLETED prior to application. Also remember to have all of your immunizations and CPR certificate. Good Luck.
  15. Hello, I will be applying to the SAC nursing program for the spring of 2013and plan on getting my bachelors while I am working as and RN. I would like to know where are the ASN credits from San Antonio college transferrable to whether it be online or in person. I wanted to apply to UTHSC but I would have to wait until FAll 2013 and I simply can't. I need a job asap. Any advice or information is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
  16. I am torn between 3 schools in San Antonio. Which are San Antonio College (ASN program program) accredited by NLNAC, Baptist School of Nursing (ASN) accredited by NLNAC and finally UT Health Science Center (BSN)The baccalaureate program is accredited by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas and the baccalaureate/ masters are both accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. I am not too sure if hospitals in the San Antonio area are requiring a BSN as I hear so many different answers. If anyone can verify that would be awesome. If a BSN is not required I would rather wait to get it later on in my career. However I have heard that Baptist is more hands with more clinicals but once you work for them they dock your pay. Again it's hear say. As for price. San Antonio College and UT Health Science are the cheapest. Another question I have is what is the difference in accreditation for these specific programs? Please Help! Thank You in advance!
