  1. Healthcare should be a basic human right...... Well why stop at healthcare? I also believe that food, clothing, a new house, cell phone, cable tv, air conditioning, the internet, college education, and a car are also basic human rights. The problem lies when you pronounce a good and service a "human right" and choose to provide others with it, it must be paid for somehow. This means stealing hard earned income from person A and giving it to person B. And for some reason, person B believes that somehow person A owes this to them, that it is their right to take person A's income to provide for their well being. Somehow person A is indebted to person B for some unknown reason. I am tired of getting my check after two weeks of work and seeing 25% of it taken from me by the federal government.
  2. Yes it is at The Dallas location. Ok great! I would recommend calling the individual you did the interview with and asking when you can come in for an interview. Plead your case as to why your the best person for the position. Or try emailing them and doing the same thing. Attach all your application documents with the email- including transcript and letters of recommendation. Try to set yourself out from the crowd and make them want to hire you.I would also look at Medical City Dallas. They do some amazing surgical techniques for their heart cases. I would have loved to work there also but I don't believe they have posted any openings yet.Good luck!
  3. I'm not sure if it is proper or not... I included a folder with my cover letter, resume, reference list, official transcript, letters of recommendation, copies of my CPR/ ACLS cards, and a copy of the certificate of completion for a dysrythmia course I took. (Senior Nursing Student Applying for My First Job) It worked. I got offered jobs at each place I applied. My cover letter listed some of the experience I had with specific diagnoses working as an extern. This sparked a conversation about the approach towards caring for this type of patient and resulted in impressed looks between interviewers after my explanation of care.
  4. Thank you for your input cmcervantes. I ended up taking the position at Baylor. Cardiac care is my passion, and at Baylor I will have the opportunity to care for post-op CABG, valve replacements, MAZE procedures, AAA, left ventricular assist devices, and heart and lung transplants. That is really what solidified the decision for me. I want to work regularly with invasive hemodynamic monitoring via pulmonary artery catheters, and provide a level of pt care that results in the best outcomes. However, I agree with you that the internship at Parkland is amazing. If Ms. Mims and Luecke had their program at Baylor I feel it would be the best training program in the country. I know Parkland's training program and learning opportunities are second to none, however the end result of care from the practicing medical residents and staff results in suboptimal patient outcomes. When you look at their ratings of treatment outcomes for various diagnoses and procedures per http://www.healthgrades.com they have many below the expected standard of care. That was the real issue tugging at me. Receiving top notch education and experience with all types of critical patients, but then having the treatment I provide maybe not have the best result for my patients. Another big factor was Parkland not performing cardiovascular surgical procedures. I had also heard that Baylor did not pay as well, however they really are very similar in rate after comparing shift diffs. Here are the numbers. Parkland: $24.52/hr $2.75-evening $3.50-night $6.00-weekend Baylor: $22.75/hr $3.00-evening $5.00-night $6.00-weekend
  5. Ok so I've gotten to interview at Baylor and Parkland.I'm trying to sort out which one of the two would be the best to work for. Can y'all help me out?Parkland has the best educational program (8 months of rigorous didactic & clinical through all ICUs and ED.) Would learn all about vents, titrating vasoactive drips, disease pathology, ect. They also pay the best for new grads in the area. Cons- very old facility, pt population may lead to a very high stress environment, they perform no cardiac surgeries, and have gotten in hot water by CMS for many infractions and has the possibility of having funding pulled if they are not corrected in one year, and they require you to sign a 3 year contract ($18.5K penalty for breaking it)Baylor Dallas- Pros very well respected hospital (I would feel very safe taking my kids there), they rank in the top of the nation in certain specialties, would probably have a better work environment- nicer facilities, lower stress level, perform all types of cardiac surgeries, and do not require you to sign a contract.Con- from what I have heard (not first hand from HR though) they do not pay very well, their education internship is only 3 months- not as in depth as parkland. So which facility would y'all prefer? Any and all feedback is appreciated!
