  1. i had this problem with a travel nurse that i used to work with. she constantly touched me when she spoke or slpped my back. i asked her once to please not touch me. it was inappropiate. she thought i was joking and slapped me harder! i was the charge nurse that night. i repeated that i had asked her to use her voice not her hands when speaking to me and that she was invading my personal space. if she were to touch me again, not only would i write her up but i would also be notifying the nursing supervisor of the issue. she got the point and she became offended! however after that she did not touch me again and dealt with me in an appropiate manner. it worked for me. but i also happen to balance between assertive and aggressive myself. i'll bet this nurse may be per diem for this reason. maybe she has difficulty fitting in. but then you also have to work in an area that you aree comfortable with. Best Wishes. ~melissa
  2. Does your facility have a policy on harrassment? While it may or may not be extreme, it is still harassment. Bullying, or whatever word they use to describe it. You have to decide for yourself at what level you are comfortable dealing with this situation. Are you comfortable confronting the people? Is your nurse manager supportive? Is there a new nurse peer support group at your facility? Unfortunately this eat the young does not only happen to new grads. I have found it to be a common occurance for most nurses changing positions/units. I have often wondered if it has to do with nursing being a female dominated feild. YUP, I know I hit a nerve or 2 with that remark. They should teach in ADN program how to fit into the new role, or at the very least communication skills with coworkers. Teamwork is preached but what to do when it fails/stalls needs to be taught. I hope your situation works out for you. ~Melissa
  3. Hello NYS Nurses, I am from the Finger Lakes Region. I am nearing the completion of my BSN. Our class was given an assignment to join this site & start/join in a conversation. I have discovered that some of the nurses sound like they are discouraged or near burn out. I was wondering why that seems to be a common theme. I, for myself, could not imagine being anything other than a nurse at this point in my life. I enjoy caring for others. I have been a nurse for about 4.5 years. Am I still in the romance phase? What has been your experience? Are you discouraged with nursing? If so, would you be willing to share why? If you enjoy nursing, would be willing to share why? Thanx, Melissa:nurse:
  4. PRO: my street clothes stay germ free. CON: My NAVY uniform is covered in WHITE great pyrenees hair!!!!! not always a good thing to take to work! lint brush any one? MY DESIGN: ever seen the back of EMS jackets? The back side of my scubs would have registered nurse across the back, with RN on front left corner. LOTS of pockets. There are ways to add individuality to your uniforms, even if the is a specific color. fancy socks......
  5. We use TEV in our facility. It has plans to integrate with meditech. (we use meditech for order entry & lab results. We started out on paper for about awhile. We went live(paperless) about 10 months ago. In general, I think the majority like it. We also use protocols at triage. The MD's met as a group to decide on them. Some like them othes don't. It does seem to increase pt. satisfaction. Helps out with wait time. results are usually back before MD sees pt. It was frightening at first for most of the staff, a period of adjustment. Does anyone out there work for a Magnet Facility? How has that changed your environment?
  6. i was 33 when i graduated and received my RN. it was difficult at times. but i have to say it was worth it. i am now almost 38 and close to BSN. i have met some really fantastic nurse along the way. i have found the majority of them encouraging. i was scared too at many points along my path, but i learned more and fear kind of became a motivator. if you want your LVN, i say go for it!
  7. i have been a RN for almost 5 years, i have split my time in both med/surg & ER. i am almost finished with my BSN. i was wondering what others had done with thier BSN. such as;what were they able to contribute to their unit/organization? how did it affect their career and what changes they were able to make +&-.
