Anybody?

I am a BSN nurse And I am currently working for the VA. I am seriously interested in joining the Air Force reserves (in Florida) but before I go talk to a recruiter, I would really appreciate any input of some actual AFR nurses! For instance, what do you do during those on-duty weekends/15 days annual drills; how often are you getting deployed and what type of deployments are there (e.g. Humanitatian, war zones, ect); are deployments always a set time of lenght or do they vary; how well does your schedule work with your civilian job; what type of benefits are there; and anything else what comes to mind that might be important to know. Furthermore, I just turned 40, and I wear contact lenses, would that be a problem? I have over one year experience in subacute/rehab but was able to finally transfer to our brand-new ER department (I am part of the activation team), so I was hoping to get a position in critical care with the AFR... Any input and insights are very much appreciated!

That is awesome! I am involved with SNA and we have a great team right now :) I really hope you guys will find out soon if you got accepted...my guess, since you already made it this far you have a very good chance of getting in. I am actually very glad the CON started interviews this year because it already weeded out some people who weren't dedicated (such as the no-shows). Nothing is more upsetting than someone taking up a seat to realize during the first semester that "nursing is not for me" ect. There are plenty of serious students who would have gladly filled that seat! Good luck and maybe we meet at your orientation:)

Just like GoKnights pointed out, clinical locations are all over the place: from Apopka over Winter Park to Bithlo...hospital setting is with the ORMC and FH...

In the first semester, most had clinicals on Thursdays and Fridays. So, if your labs happen to be on a Tuesday, you will be busy Monday through Friday. I know of a few students who had to make arrangements for their kids because of that.

Oh, I would wait with the shoes until you get more info. Since they are switching to black pants they might change the color of shoes, too...just a thought. If I remember ask next week if they decided on that and let you guys know :)

No, we had no say in terms of lab hours/days or placements. With that many students, they just make the schedule as it fits...I got lucky the first semester because I ended up having all my classes and labs on Mondays and Wednesdays but nothing on Tuesdays :)

Did you already take the pre-reqs for the nursing program? Are going for ADN or BSN? After I completed my required courses I took medical terminology and would have taken intro to pharmacology if I have had the time. Most science classes are taken in a specific sequence b/c one might be a pre-req of the other. I tried to pair two sciences and to easier classes per semester, which worked out well. I am currently approaching my second semester of nursing and I can tell you that they except you to know A&P, micro, nutrition, ect... Good luck :)

I couldn't agree more with this! I used to have a study-buddy and we brainstormed very well together. We studied on our own and then met up to discuss the material and clarify misunderstandings ect. But it doesn't work with too many participants. Most importantly, the students who study together need to be on the same page...that was just my experience...

Welcome to allnurses :) Your stats look very much like mine: Overall GPA 3.95, Pre-req GPA 4.0, TEAS score 82.I got accepted into the UCF BSN generic program, starting Fall 2012.Therefore, I think you will have excellent chances to get into the program of your choice (I think that the accelerated program might be even a tad easier to get in).If you want to play it save you can always re-take the TEAS and try to get a higher score (only the highest score will count so there is no harm in trying).I reccomend that you start or look out for a new thread in this forum to meet students pertaining to your application pool.Hope this helps and good luck!

my friend who did the program said that the CON didn't give out the book list until about 2 weeks before the semester starts...

Hello fldobielover: I don't think that this is a good thread to find your answers because it is based on a whole different applicant pool. You should post your question as a new thread or wait to see if someone else who is applying to the same program starts one. It usally happens as it gets closer to the official application time window. Good luck!
