Hi, I have worked with a few male nurses on L&D and postpartum. It is ironic that women will accept a male doctor but many are uncomfortable with a male nurse, although I do agree with those who commented that the care a nurse gives tends to be more personal and therefore some women are uncomfortable having a male attend them. If you can keep a positive attitude about it, and not take it personally, I would encourage you to follow your dreams. One thing you may consider is going on to become a certified nurse-midwife. I am a CNM, as well as a university professor, and I have several male midwifery students. I think it's a little bit easier for a male midwife than a male OB nurse, because women are used to seeing a man in the OB provider role. If you decide to stick with being an OB nurse, it will take extra patience and persistence, but you can do it!
