  1. I am sooooo glad I logged on today. I have been a nurse on a med-surg floor for only 9 months. I had worked with heparin drips very little. Recently at the end of my shift a Dr. ordred a heparin drip on a patient. I had just started to give report to the nurse for the next shift. I told her that I would stay and hang the heparin for her. After finishing report I got the bag of heparin and went to the patients room. The nurse taking over went with me. The pump was to be set for 4 cc per hour and I set it for 40. However I did not press start yet. I turned to the nurse and asked if that was correct because I had not worked with heparin drips much. She went balistic. Became very verble. And then has been telling everyone what a dangerous nurse I am and that she doesn't want to take report from me anymore. I am still wondering if I should be a nurse now. I would not have started that pump without asking someone to check it for me. Shouldn't that count for something? Anyway as I have read your posts today I feel much better. Thank you for sharing.
  2. My patient had bilateral renal stones. My nursing diagnosis is Risk for impaired urinary elimination R/T bilateral renal stones. My instructor did not like the 3 goals I had so can anyone tell me what they would use? I used maintain urinary output with no signs of obstruction, pt will verbalize imporatance of maintaing adaquate fluid intake and consume 100% of fluids. Guess I am way off base. Please help.
  3. Thanks for the explanations. I do understand it now.
  4. Yes it is endocrine which is actually covered in our G.I class. Your explanation was very helpful. Thanks
  5. I am a nursing student in my last semester. I have an exam in G.I. this coming week and there might be a essay question about T3 T4 and TSH and how they interact. Can someone please explain this to me. I am not understanding it by reading the book. Thanks
  6. I certainly did not mean any offense when using the term bipolar. I simply was referring to her constant change of behavior. I apologize if I offended anyone.
  7. I was searching for nursing web sites and stumbled over it. And I love it here.
  8. No, I am from Illinois. And I am sorry if you have an instructor like this.
  9. Thank you all for your responses. That is why I love this site. There is always encouragement and good advice here. And I will let you know what happens.
  10. I went to her after my exam and asked her what she was trying to do to me. She said she had done alot of soul searching the night before and had been reading her Bible. She said that she had seen a weakness in me in clinical and felt that I was not cut out for nursing. That is why she was going to fail me. At one point in clinicals she told me that I needed to withdrawl and that I should think about another occupation. Anyway, she told me that she could not fail me because I have alot of compassion. She said she thought I would struggle my 2nd year and she hoped the best for me.
  11. I am in my last 8 weeks of my first year of an ADN program. Throughout this entire 8 weeks my clinical instuctor has been driving me crazy. Two weeks ago we had midterm. Everything was fine. She said I had a little too much anxiety but that would ease with time. The next week, she asked me a question about something in the chart and when I hesitated trying to think of the answer she became very angry. At the end of that clinical she told me she was failing me. I went home in tears. She called me that night at home and said she would give me another chance but I would have to do an extra clinical day which I did and it went well. At that time I had only 1 clinical day left and that day also went well. At the end of that clinical day, she again told me she was failing me. She said she did not think that I was ready to go to 2nd year. I stayed calm but told her that I would appeal her decision.SHe became visibly upset and told me that maybe if we could do 1 more clinical day that she could probably get me passed. I told her no. We had an exam the next day and I was so upset I could not study. There was no sense of studying or going in and taking the exam if I failed clinical. Before all this started I had a B in the class. She told me to go on to class and take my exam and to come talk to her the next day after the exam. So I went to class the next day and took the exam and got a D. The worst grade I have had. Right after the exam she came into my class and told me she had decided not to fail me after all. Now I have my final coming up and have lost points due to the bad grade. Should I go to the Dean of students? What can I do??
  12. I had a question on a quiz that asked that we listen and identify a lung sound. The choices were crackles, wheezes, or pleral friction rub. I knew the answer was pleural friction rub but when I wrote it down I only wrote pleural. My instructor checked it wrong and when I questioned her about it she said I could have meant pleural anything. I can't get past it so If anyone says I should not have gotten credit and that she was right then I will put it to rest and accept it. What do you think??
  13. I will be graduating from the ADN program in the spring of 2006. I will be 42 at that time. Will it be difficult to find a nursing job at that age?? Are hospitals reluctant to hire someone at this age?
  14. I am in my 2nd semester, 1st 8 weeks. I just got a D in the med surg class. I will go right on into psych next week and then after summer break I will take the class over again. Very devastating. My question is, are all ADN programs the same? In 8 weeks we covered I.V. therapy, communicable diseases, immunization schedule, general assessment, children assessment, G.I., Neuro, Fluid and Elec, Renal, skin disorders, and then 2 days before our final, which was 90 questions, we covered hematology and oncology and there were 50 questions on the final covering just that info. We only had really 1 1/2 days to study hem. and onc. Is that normal?? That is what kept me from passing, I concentrated so hard on learning hem and onc that I did not have time to go back over the other material and refresh.
  15. Thank you!!!! That helped alot.
