  1. Does anyone know how strict they are about working in Tier 1 sites (HPSA Score >14)? I am also concerned about finding work after finishing school. There are a lot of HPSA sites that are
  2. I think that each time a spot becomes available, the committee looks at all the alternates and makes a decision. I like the fact that other schools have ranks, so you have a better idea of where your are, so you don't just sit there and wait. I remember someone from the interview staff saying that an alternate was called as late as the first week of school. To me that is really scary and I don't want to gamble on the fact that they may or may not call me. I just left my deposit with another FNP program, but it requires me to move out of state, so I don't have time to wait around for Western if it comes down to the wire. Good luck to everyone!
  3. I got on the alternate list! Guess I'll be going to another FNP program. Congrats to everyone that got in!
  4. @katiej815 - All CNL programs award a MSN (Master's in Nursing), including USD. Although you are awarded an MSN, it doesn't mean you are necessarily advanced practice (APRN). It just means that you can sit for the certification exam to become a Clinical Nurse Leader. For more information about the CNL role, I would visit this site on AACN, who created this role. American Association of Colleges of Nursing | CNL & CNC News I understand that you want to be an NP and you still can go for your NP certificate after you earn the MSN/CNL. Even though I was waitlisted at USD, I decided that if I was offered an acceptance, I would turn it down to attend another program that cost about the same, but I would come out with an NP. For me, the role of the CNL is too young and jobs seem scarce for that particular role. It may change in the future, but I don't want to sit around and wait for these changes to occur, when I can enter into a specialty of nursing that is already widely utilized and accepted. If you know what you want, than go for it, more power to you. I truly love nursing, but the confusion with advance practice specialties/MSN/CNL, 2015 Doctoral initiatives for advance practice, multiple certifications, non-uniform points of entry to become an RN, really make the profession seem convoluted. If it was up to me, I would require all nurses to have a BSN and all APRN to have a masters. Doctorates would only be reserved for those wanting to go into academia. Again, these are my opinions, so take them a grain of salt if you would.
  5. Congrats to everyone that got in. I got waitlisted, so it looks like I'll be heading to another program. Good luck to everyone!
  6. Anyone accepted into Vanderbilt from Southern California, planning to drive out there? I'm one step closer to deciding on Vanderbilt since I was rejected recently from a local school. If I end up going, I may be driving out there, so I have a car.
  7. Got the letter through snail mail. I live about an hour away from UCLA
  8. Don't be discouraged. I just found out I was rejected from UCLA too! I'm still waiting on Western, since I interviewed in Feb. I have some backup schools on the East Coast/Midwest, but would like to stay in CA. This is going to be a long month!
  9. Congrats! Just wondering, but what are your stats? You can send me a private message if you like. Thanks!
  10. I got the rejection in the mail as well. Was looking forward to attending, but at least I can narrow down my choices now. Deciding between Vanderbilt and Columbia. Still waiting on a few others though. Good luck to everyone else.
  11. OMG!!! Thanks for letting us know Lisa. Don't know if you ever got my private message that I sent awhile back. If not, thanks for sending me all that info. If I don't get in this year, I don't know what to say. Just praying every day right now.
  12. Congrats to everyone who got in! I just found out yesterday that I was accepted to the FNP specialty. Now, I'm just torn between Vandy and Columbia. Still waiting to hear back from all the West Coast schools (where I'm from). My final decision is still up in the air, but it's great to know that I have a seat somewhere. I also noticed the deposit was relatively cheap compared to other schools, only $200! Good luck to everyone!
  13. That's a lot of people, but there also must be a waitlist for those not accepted. Hope to see you guys next week! Good luck!
  14. AuntySam- If you read last years thread a lot of people who were accepted posted their stats.
  15. Read the thread from last year. We don't begin to hear back until early March. It's just the waiting game now.
  16. I got an interview invite on 1/25/12 for Tuesday 1/31/12. It's also at 12:45pm, so I guess I'll see you guys there.
  17. I received an email from Columbia today and they stated that it was acceptable for me to submit my FASFA SAR from 2011-2012 since my income and other information remained the same. I had an issue with filling out this year's FASFA (2012-2013) because they asked that I list myself as a "5th year undergrad" and I didn't want to do that because it might have affected my SAR when I submit it to schools where I am applying for MSN direct-entry programs and have to state that I am a graduate student. I also emailed the FASFA people and they said that it is possible to go back into the application after it has processed and make changes. Hope this helps! Here is what they said: Students have several options to correct or update their FAFSA information: * Students who have their Federal Student Aid PIN may change their school information online at http://www.fafsa.gov. Log in and choose "Make FAFSA Corrections". Navigate to the "School Selection" section, follow the instructions and update your information. Your correction is not submitted until you receive a confirmation after choosing "Submit my FAFSA" at the end. * Students may correct their Student Aid Report (SAR) and return the signed SAR to the address indicated on page ten. * Students who have their Data Release Number (DRN) may change or add schools by calling the FSAIC at one of the numbers below. The DRN is only found on the SAR or the confirmation page and can change with each award year. * In some cases, students may take or send a copy of the SAR to the new school. Contact the financial aid office at the school to see if this is sufficient.
  18. Myelin - I have the same concerns. It is recommended that you only fill out one FASFA per year, so since we are applying to multiple programs with BSN/MSN it will be difficult. Columbia wants us to apply as 5th year undergrad students to get the most aide. I'm in the same boat as you since Columbia wants the SAR by Jan. 4th and other programs won't get back to me by March. Columbia is a great school, but my decision is not finalize and will still depend on my acceptance to other programs. I sent an email to the FASFA people, so hopefully they can be of some help. I'll keep you updated.
  19. I was also looking at UCSF, but I missed the deadline. I have only recently decided to pursue nursing, so this is a second-career for me. I also applied to Western, Columbia, UCLA, Duke, etc...
  20. I'm hoping they take into consideration all my pre-req classes and grad classes for the merit scholarship. I did not do too well in undergrad, but for sure made that up later on in life. I'm also from the Los Angeles area. If anyone wants to get together and discuss applications and such, I'm available. It's hard enough going through this process alone and usually family and friends don't understand all the work it requires.
  21. I would just fill out the financial aide FASFA and turn in the fellowship/scholarship forms as well. The early the better, I presume. I have also received an email today stating that my application is complete and that admission notices will go out in mid-March. It's kind of a long time, considering some schools have early admission decisions by mid-December. I hope I get in since it is close to my home and commuting will be a lot cheaper than relocating. Good luck to all you guys!
  22. Hey guys, Just to let you know, the interview went pretty well. I did it over the phone and it was about 45 minutes. The only thing I was worried about was awkward pauses, but we didn't really have any of that. I was interviewed by Denelle Alton, who works with admissions. She is really nice and it felt very informal, like two friends having a conversation. She asked me a lot of basic questions that you would usually get in an interview, such as: Why choose nursing, JHU, your specialty? What experiences do you have to offer to the program? What current issues in nursing are you interested in? What are you goals? Rate yourself in terms of skill level, and then she lists some skills for you, such as researching, public speaking, etc...& some other ones I am forgetting at the moment. I think the best strategy is be yourself and know yourself. Be comfortable talking about your life, goals, experiences, etc... I hope this helps and good luck everyone.
  23. Thanks for the reality check guys. This is really depressing to hear. Is the job market a little better for those who are in advanced practice or is it the same for everyone? I guess it's really who you know then.
  24. I'm currently residing in So. Cal. and not sure about making the move if I get in. I'm still waiting to hear back from other local schools, but JHU is a great school if I do decide to move. I have my interview tomorrow, so I'll let you guys know how it goes. Wish me luck!
