MDC Spring 2012 Part Time Program
Mishell, I don't know and was wondering the same myself... I do have a rolling bag, but I still don't plan to take all the "required" books tomorrow. I'll wait and see what she says about the books that are needed for that class. See you tomorrow!!!

MDC Spring 2012 :)
Hey guys, Haven't been able to find comfortable shoes yet!!! I do wear an odd size so don't want to buy online... If you all know of any recommended store, let me know. I've already tried going to Uniform Advantage. Thanks!

Mishell, Also, remember that the gentleman in charge of the MDC bookstore mentioned reading Ch. 15 through 18 during orientation. I did start reading, I just finished Ch. 16. Yes, I also read somewhere that pre-reading Ch. 34 (Infection control) was recommended. Happy reading!

MDC Spring 2012 Part Time Program
Hi Mishell, I'm almost certain we'll need the stethoscope for skills lab on Saturdays and again when we start clinicals in the summer. Yes, we're to wear the lab coat on Saturdays for skills lab. They did not specify what should be worn under the lab coat, but I plan to wear a plain T-shirt with either jeans or scrub pants (something comfortable) and closed shoes. Nursing school will be dominating our lives for the next two and a half years!!! Our class is small ( I hear a lot of people are having issues with their background check not coming back, but it looks like, from the posts, it should not affect your ability to stay in the program. It must be annoying, though... Hopefully, it gets resolved soon!

MDC Spring 2012 :)
Oh Cool! Thanks for sharing this info, on eagles wings! I was just trying to see how much $ I have left so I can order a couple more books from Amazon. I'm scratching this one off the list for now...

Hi there Full-Timers, What was the ATI diagnostic tests about? How are "scores" reported? Us Part-Timers don't take that test 'til the end of the month. Thanks!

MDC Spring 2012 Part Time Program
Yep! Big time! I estimate that between books, uniforms and supplies, I'll be out $600+ for sure! And then, another 1K in tuition and fees for the first semester!

MDC Spring 2012 Part Time Program
Chanel360, I wish we had met yesterday, we should have planned to meet... LOL!! I did the same thing, I went to the bookstore and wanted to buy everything too! Since I had started buying some books online, I decided to compare prices and fair enough, much cheaper online. Anyway, I ended up buying the labcoat, the jacket (not very flattering...) for clinicals and the curriculum (sure hope the curriculum is worth the $51.25?!?!). I'm heading to UA this week-end to see if the supplies are cheaper there versus online (allheart.com). I hear stethoscopes go missing a lot, so I'm going to try to buy a wild color that cannot be mistaken! I'll let you know what I find and you do the same! I agree that the orientation was very informative. I wasn't familiar with the campus so it was nice to find out about the resources that are available. I will be doing some more exploring of the campus after the ATI test on the 30th. :)

MDC Spring 2012 Part Time Program
Hi Chanel360, Were you able to contact whoever called you? What did they say about the PT program?
-
MDC Spring 2012 Part Time Program
Chanel360, No, I did not receive a call... I had applied only for the PT program. I'm sure curious to find out what they tell you. Hope there is no issue with the PT program this spring (I know they had to cancel it last spring)!

MDC Spring 2012 :)
Hey Neyla, I agree with you that the answers to these questions are sort of gray... I'd focus on patient care, so the question about the person calling in sick and lying, I'd say something to the effect of whether or not this can have an impact of patient care, then I would take action by alerting a supervisor anonymously... (remember: you need to be on the employer's side). For me, my biggest mistake would be something to the effect of procrastinating and not starting nursing school sooner.. (this, of course, is applicable depending on your age :))

MDC Spring 2012 Part Time Program
Hi Lynn12, Chanel360 nailed it! I did purchase the TEAS study guide and found it helpful to review science as I took A&P/Micro/Chem >10 years ago!!! My GPA was 3.5 and TEAS score 89%. Your sciences GPA is important (40%) but a strong TEAS score (60%) is extremely helpful. Also, when you apply, apply for multiple programs (i.e. FT, PT, etc) as long as you know you will be able to attend either when you get accepted. Your chances of being accepted depends on the applicant pool for the program(s) you applied for, so if your overall score (GPA + TEAS) is not so great and there is a strong applicant pool for the FT, maybe you'll stand a better chance with the applicant pool for the PT, vice versa. I didn't find that out until after I applied for the PT program only, but I could only attend the PT program anyway... Hope this helps!

MDC Spring 2012 Part Time Program
I ordered them from Amazon. It's a bit hard finding these types of books used and in good enough condition. Amazon is definitely cheaper than the school bookstore! The med-surg book is probably a good idea, but we have Fundamentals the first two semesters so I'd focus on the Fundamentals reading first then move on to the others... OK. I'm out! Trying to enjoy as much as I can of my week-end nights until January...

MDC Spring 2012 Part Time Program
Start Reading: I have been in touch with a PT MDC student who started in Fall 2011 and a friend of mine who just graduated from BCC. Recommendations from both: Nursing Fundamentals Reviews and Rationales by Mary Ann Hogan Fundamentals Success by Nugent & Vitale And if you already have your Fundies book, start reading it too! I'm waiting for orientation before I buy my Fundies book (want to be sure of the edition they'll be using for Spring).

MDC Spring 2012 Part Time Program
Chanel 360, Thanks for the words of encouragement!! For the first semester, I looked up the courses a couple of weeks ago, and it seems like we have classes two nights a week (Tues and Wed, I think?) from 6 to 7:30pm and Saturday from 10 to 4:15pm. Of course, it might change...

MDC Spring 2012 Part Time Program
Hi Chanel360, :hrns&wlcm:and :ancong!: on your acceptance! Isn't it so exciting to know that you're just one step closer to doing what you really want to do, yet so nerve-racking when you hear/read all the stories of how intense the program is?? Hopefully in the PT program, we'll have a little more time to assimilate the material at a slightly slower pace... I applied to the PT program only because I have to work (9 to 5), take care of kids, home, etc. So, it'll be a lot to juggle, but I'm already starting to get everybody at home in check and learn how to become self sufficient... Kudos to you and hope to "see" you here and around on campus! Just a few more days until orientation!

Haven't been here in a few days... Thanks so much, on eagles wings. These are some really good tips. I'll definitely stop by to say hi and pick your brain and ask for help, etc. :)
