  1. Hi...nice article, but please, 4 1/2 yrs!!!!! Try 20+ years & then talk stress......
  2. I actually don't like telling people what I do....they seem to have a 'pre concieved' idea of what/who I am. Nursing is my job, it's what I do, to make a living. You do your best, be good, kind, efficient , follow the rules.... Like a lot of jobs. We have rough schedules & that messes with life, long hours etc.... but for sure, we are NOT special .
  3. Don't do drugs, simple as that.. You're a professional who wants to LOOK AFTER PEOPLE.... The system does not look lightly upon those who bend the rules. You are held to a higher standard in this job. You can't have your cake & eat it too. It doesn't fly in this line of work ....
  4. Hi, ... Time will help ....learn from seasoned staff, don't think they can't help/teach etc ....we're all stressed in the job, the pace is increasing with new benchmarks, satisfaction, door to EKG times, door to cath lab, door to ct, time from admit order to admit bed, 5 mins or less to triage,.....etc etc etc... ....BE a team player, HELP your co workers when you can (it goes a long way), have a WORK ethic, BE KIND to your techs (help them too) ....stand up for yourself .....get used to MORE THAN your pt assignment you had in your old unit...your turn over of pts can be dozens in a 12 hr shift...& you're responsible for assessing, re assessing, treating, medicating, teaching, cleaning your room, cleaning your pt, assessing re assessing, getting pts by w/c from outside, helping pts that aren't yours, answering calls from outside, dealing with EVERY Dept who always wants the NURSE! .....the admit floors hate us, ICU thinks we do nothing... It can be a thankless job but it can be an amazing job.... You'll fall in love with your team mates, you'll hate your team mates, but in the end we're all a sort of big messed up happyish work family. You'll cry, laugh, give up, try again, be exhausted, be energetic.....all I can say is GOOD LUCK!!!!!! 😉
  5. C'mon guys.........ageism....it sure is a trend in this millennial focused world . Try revering those with experience vs disparaging thoughts & remarks. You may feel differently when you reach the 'ripe old age of 30, 40, 50 +'. Those who have stuck it out that long do have a lot to offer....often the 'younger' crowd are viewed as trying to reinvent the wheel....quite often you don't need to. So perhaps those of you who don't like the term 'eat their young' should not refer to mature staff as 'dinosaurs' & relegate them to a stature of just an 'fte'. Keep everyone engaged, no matter their age.
  6. Meditech 6.0 as an end user really sucks!!!! Hope you have thick skin to deal with all the hassle it creates. It is not USER friendly, takes way too long to find the information and is probably the worse thing I've used as an RN in many years.....seriously making me think I need to move away from health care....be warned...it impacts pt care greatly!!! It does not make it safer...and to add to this we also use Emar Bmv......in conjuction....being totally electronic, esp in critical situations has to be the most scary and futile waste of time....documenting on a sick sick pt is very hard....anyone picking up the chart to follow on, does NOT get a clear picture of how that person presented & or changes, especially in the ED setting in which I work.....I hate the system!
