Yes, I applied for my NP license only. Did not need a furnishing license. You must have a CA RN license though to get your NP license. I believe you can apply for both the RN & NP license at the same time

At UM the graduate classes are in the late afternoons to evenings. I've had classes from 4p-7p and classes as late as 7p-10p. I don't know which program is more rigorous. I don't know anyone in the Barry program so I can't say.

I'd choose UM bc you really only have to go to class 3 nights a week (full time), 2 nights (part time) and you finish sooner. But one major con of UM is coming up with $40k over the course of one year.

I wouldn't call it a weeding out process but the first semester is the most difficult...mostly because we have Patho & Pharm. So once you are done with the first semester it is all downhill from there. I have found that professors are quite reasonable at UM.

Hello Msjpurdy: If you are a good student and can stay organized it's definitely possible for the first semester and probably the second (so long as you don't mind cutting out any type of social life). The third semester however has a required 280 clinical hours, and for our cohort we do this over the summer semester which is only 10 wks. That's about 28 hrs of clinical per week, in addition to the 12 hours of class time. Some people can probably handle working full time but I wouldn't recommend it for the third semester.

No term papers the first semester in the FNP program. I have to edit my previous post. I meant to say I have 12 hrs of class & 6 hrs of clinical per week. Not "12 hrs of class and 6 hrs of class per week."

I'm doing the one yr FNP at UM and I have to say that the course load is manageable. Not as overwhelming as I thought it would be. I have 12 hrs of class and 6 hrs of class per week, this semester. In the following semesters the clinical hours will be doubled or even tripled. I also feel that although the program is expensive-$40k for the yr, it is worth it because you will begin working faster and start earning some of that money back.

@katerina89, I think we will be just fine. The workload is manageable. I have spoken with graduates of the program. It may be possible to work part time the first semester but not the 2nd and 3rd. There are quite a few recent-new grad nurses in our program so you are not alone there. At some point I think our cohort should start a private facebook group so that we can all keep in contact and share information and stuff. I went to UM last year and our class had a FB group. It was so helpful to be able to communicate with everyone in class...for example, you could post a question about financial aid on the facebook page and several people would respond right away. Much easier than calling up the fin aid office and going through some automated phone prompts.

Is anyone else having trouble viewing the videos for the online summer course (NUR 501)? More than half of the videos are not showing up for me. I am using Google Chrome but I have also tried Internet Explorer.

I thought the interview was very relaxed and informal. My interview was less than 10 mins and most of it was me talking. They asked a lot of open ended questions so I was able to talk about my interests and experience. I was only asked a couple of technical nursing questions and they were pretty basic.

I got my acceptance letter a few days ago. Now I have to figure out how to come up with the money to pay for this program. I am excited though. I'm a new grad nurse so the thought of taking on an NP program is intimidating. But the good thing is that my study skills are still pretty fresh.

I was accepted with a gpa of 3.4 from the school where I did my first degree and 3.8 from the college where I took all of my prereqs.

I found the books for NUR 314 "Health Assessment" by going to the UM bookstore website, the other classes haven't posted their books to the bookstore webpage yet. Also, the Professor for NUR 315 "Pathophysiology" posted the course syllabus on to the Blackboard website and the recommended texts are listed on the syllabus. I don't know about the books for the other classes yet.

If any one lives in Florida or will be in FL and still needs to get their physical and immunizations, I went to an affordable place today that I wanted to let everyone know about. It's called Doctors365, 1368 N. University Drive, Plantation, Florida 33322 My physical was $30, varicella titer was $27 and the Tb test was $12. They also had affordable vaccines. The people are nice there too, they are mostly PA students so that's why everything is priced so low. I recommend going early (they open at 8am), bring all your immunization records and print out the forms for UM, and don't forget that for the Tb (PPD) test you need to be seen twice, you get the results on the second visit.
