  1. I know for sure because I've done all the paperwork already, and was told by *****, the program assistant that I'm all set. You have to write a deferral letter explaining your reasons to *****, the program coordinator. I emailed mine to *****, and she brought it to the admissions committee to discuss. Then from there, they will either approve or disapprove the deferral. But contact ****, she responds to emails almost immediately and is SUPER helpful through the process. The entire process after sending in the deferral request letter only took a day before they gave me their decision. Then after that you have to sign a few things and fill out a few forms.
  2. Thanks :) And you the UBC-O one! They're nicer than I thought since they said I could finish my degree and start the year after.
  3. I'm just waiting for my deferral instruction package. I'm pretty sure once I get the instructions the first person on the waitlist is going to get an offer.
  4. I'm not sure about UBC-O or the RN program, but it costs me at least 7k a year here in Vancouver at UBC Point Grey. My tuition every year just for regular classes 10 courses a year, is about 5800-5900 plus books and random fees here and there. So I don't think 8000 is far off considering for the nursing program you're probably going to need more books and pay more lab fees.
  5. Recently I discovered that the Vancouver Sun publishes the names, employers, and titles of all the employees working in public sectors being paid over 75,000 a year. I was shocked to see that the top earning nurses are making upwards of 180000 a year! How is that possible considering the maximum hourly wage for nurses in B.C. (as far as I know) is 40.42? If you do a calculation, 40.42 an hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year should only be 82,000. Even with time and a half (or double pay) during holidays, maximum should not be more than double that number? Also, I thought maybe these RNs are in supervisory positions or teaching positions but the positions listed does not seem to indicate that? Here's some data taken from Vancouver Sun Public Sector Salaries - Vancouver Sun I haven't started a nursing career yet, so forgive me if I ask silly questions. First thing is what is the difference between nurse direct patient care and registered nurse? Secondly, the 2 RNs on here, how can they rack up that many hours to end up with the salary they are getting? Are they working a lot of overtime hours? (aren't there laws preventing that?)
  6. One of the other threads about scheduling piqued my interest. I understand every hospital is different and everyone has different schedules but I wanted to see what kind of variation one could expect. So....RNs: Are you guys... full time part time casual also do you have a standard schedule, if yes, what is it, if not, what does your monthly schedule look like? How many hours are you getting if you're part time/casual? Is it because you wanted that many hours (for pt/casual) or there are not enough shifts for you?
  7. That was easy...deferral granted I guess I'm starting this program in 2013!
  8. I don't think it's alphabetical because my last name starts with W.
  9. Got my acceptance email. I need to ask the student advisor for a possible deferral to next year though, although I doubt they'll agree. We'll see how this goes.
  10. I was just wondering if they're waiting for the Bio 153 grades for UBC people, that's all.
  11. They wouldn't wait until June 15...... the marks for the winter session counts only. You can't do the summer session Bio 153 for entry into nursing in September. Everyone has finished the finals for Bio 153 more than 2 weeks ago, marks are supposed to be out any day now.
  12. Hmm....I get the feeling that admissions won't be offered until Bio 153 marks are out because for the people that have applied and are in the process of completing Bio 153, they can't make offers to them unless they pass Bio 153. Since marks aren't even out now, they can't make offers to those people at all. I wonder if they're going to wait on the people that have completed Bio 153 too, so that they make offers after they have completed final transcripts for all the candidates.
  13. I believe if it hasn't changed from 2 years ago, it was 10ish people..
  14. It's 2-3 weeks from the last day of interviews. They have to evaluate everyone before deciding.
  15. I do agree 2 of the interviewers in my group didn't say anything or even introduce themselves. Didn't really feel like that was appropriate, at least say hi to the people being interviewed.... Also considering that we were told the interviewers would introduce themselves. One person I went in and she didn't even say anything to me. I introduced myself and she just nodded, I had to ask her if she just wants me to start on the scenario or what.. because I was waiting for her to at least say hi or something. But the experience was really fun, like a game, even gave me a bit of an adrenaline rush trying to get to the right stations and keep within the time limits. I'm pretty positive I got a spot though. I'm pretty confident that I did my interviews well.
  16. I thought it was a lot of fun. Definitely entertained me for 2 hours.
  17. A friend of mine did say that her friend last year didn't get an interview offer until late towards the first week of april and that she was shocked people were getting interview offers so early this year so relax, I'm sure they're still sending emails.
  18. Did anyone manage to confirm if it's 180 or 200 people being interviewed? Also I was looking at the schedule thing that UBC put up. I don't really get it, does that mean we get a small break (2 weeksish) between every term?? Or do we have exams during that time? http://www.nursing.ubc.ca/CurrentStudents/documents/BSN%20Curriculum%20Structure%202011.pdf
  19. Well some people are almost certain that they are going to get into another program but haven't gotten the final OK yet so they can't toss this application just in case somehow they don't get into the other program that they want more??
  20. I have decided to go and take the interview to see if I am actually good enough to be accepted. Then I will make a decision from there. I will try to make my decision as quickly as possible if I get an offer so people that are short listed can move up and get an offer if I decide not to pursue it. I do enjoy possibly being an OR nurse, from what I've seen and heard it is something I am interested in. The atmosphere is great, and helping doctors and dealing with life and death situations would be enjoyable. I like the excitement and rush associated with OR or ER nursing. But I'm not sure if I'm interested in teaching MORE. I was SURE that I wouldn't get a chance to pursue nursing and I had previously designed my decisions around not being accepted. Like I said, I am torn. Also for those of you that get short listed (if you do), I already know 2 people that will be interviewing but even if they get in, they will not accept the offer. Actually quite a few people this year seem to want to do that, so the first few people that get short listed can stop worrying, there will definitely be quite a few that don't accept their offers.
  21. I got an interview today for Friday the 20th. This is really screwing me up because I was sure I wouldn't get in so I can finish my BA then do my MA. But now I have an interview and it's so hard for me to say no because it's definitely a good career with high employment rates, and good pay. However, my other path of doing my BA, MA and possibly PhD and taking up teaching, the chances of success are slimmer, probably less pay but I love it. I'm so torn, I don't even know if I want to go to the interview because if they accept me then I feel pressured to say yes because 2 years, good career vs my other choice, another 3-7 years of school, plus no definite outcome. I don't hate nursing either I think it could be an interesting career but I also want to do my MA.............. I hate this so much. I feel sick. For the people testing alphabetical theory, my last name is W. I don't understand why I even got an interview, I had a 75-76% average and did my application on the last day just because I felt bad leaving it blank...... I haven't worked in any hospitals or in any health care settings and I've only done limited volunteer work, mostly related to photography... I don't know why I'm ranting guys, sorry.
  22. The course is tough, but from what I hear, many courses are along the same lines and taught a a similar level as Bio 153 in the UBC nursing program. I highly recommend finding a study buddy or study group as well so you can study with others and they can explain to you what you don't understand. You can take it in the summer, but I'm not sure how much help it will be considering that UBC doesn't replace the grade of the first Bio 153 that you took. The course will just end up with 2 grades, and you get it twice on your transcript. Are you taking notes in lecture? What do you mean by feeling blank? Even if you don't understand it, write it down so you can check in the textbook later or bring it to tutorial sessions and ask for help or ask to explain the concepts again.
  23. They didn't specifically say but I don't think they really care. As long as you have enough credits to be looked at and they look at your grade in the last 30 credits. However, just know that the course load for nursing is quite heavy. I've been hearing it's around 40 hrs a week spent on classes and homework, not counting clinicals.
  24. They need your final transcripts again to see what grades you've gotten but most importantly for people still doing their pre-requisites during the year that they apply, to see if people successfully finished their pre-reqs. Otherwise I'm pretty sure you lose your spot if you end up failing a pre-req course.
  25. Thanks for the info :) Do you know how many people were admitted in your year (and how many applied)? From the last few years I hear 120 in some years and 90 in other years so I'm a little confused.
