I really don't remember my TEAS score. Just study from a TEAS prep book and you should do fine.

My school accepted my high school chemistry so, I didn't need to take it.

Take it 1 unit exam at a time. Dosage is simple, but get used to doing the calculation in the required format because it will make future tests and semesters easier. Most people do well in N1 so, don't worry. In N1, I did not print out the power points, but had them open to look at on my ipad. Prof. Parkes likes you to take notes from her lectures. I had to change this up in N2 because the teaching style was different. You'll make the necessary adjustments that work for you.

You'll get into a routine and you will do just fine! Prof. Parkes is very nurturing and friendly. By the way, I was the guy who popped his head in to say good luck. You have a large class this term!

The only thing I remember about the first day orientation was sitting in a class listening to an instructor explain everything, going to the lab for the same thing, and completing paperwork. As of now, I still don't think Montefiore has worked out the financial side. There was talk of Montefiore giving out personal loans to students at the same interest rate of student loans. I haven't heard of any updates to that. As of last week, none of us had paid for the Fall term. We just received a letter indicating that Montefiore is waiving this term's tuition for all current students.. That's a free semester of nursing school! We were all caught off guard, but very happy to hear that. I assume everything will be worked out for the next term.

Your lecture instructor also teaches dosage calc. Prof. J.P. is the Nursing 1 instructor (she's a great person, by the way). The dosage calc is pretty easy. There is a recommended text book called Calculating with confidence, if you want to practice. They teach you to use ratio and proportion to set up the problem. An example of nursing 1 calc is.. The doctor orders a 10mg tablet of XX. On hand, you have 5mg tablets. How many tabs would you give. This is very simple, but they want to see your work using ratio and proportion.

Nothing special..stethoscope, penlight, pens, pad. Your clinical time is split between caring for the 1 patient you are assigned to and completing the necessary clinical forms, which includes their medical hx, labs, diagnostic tests, and medications. In Nursing 1, you provide AM cares (bathing, linen changes, etc.), and once you pass your dosage/med exam, you can begin to give oral meds, and IM/SQ injections. That's about half way through nursing 1.

The 1st term takes a little bit of time getting used to. You're learning concepts you probably never touched on before, and you're going to be touching people in ways you never touched people before (mentally and physically). From day 1, you are being prepped to take the NCLEX. All test questions are NCLEX style. Some people have difficulty at first getting used to questions that require critical thinking, but you will get used to it... you have to! Juggling F/T work, school, and family is very challenging. Your friends and family need to understand nursing school is going to become your life for 2 years. The only advice I can provide is to make sure you keep your priorities straight. If nursing school can't be your priority, this might not be the right time for you. I hope this doesn't instill any fear. The process has been great so far..it just requires dedication. The time really does fly, and by this time next year, you'll be typing the same things I am! Perhaps a new post should be opened with the new name of the school, Montefiore SON? The new link is... You definitely need a penlight. I bought a package on Amazon that had a stethoscope, penlight, scissors, ruler, and 4 color pen. I would also buy a small note pad to use in clinical (for vitals, notes). You will have paperwork to complete during clinical, but the pad works well if you don't want to carry the paperwork around.

Hi RNDreamers! I am completing my first semester at Hopfer now. I recently posted about it here... https://allnurses.com/new-york-state/dorothea-hopfer-681634-page10.html It's a great school with wonderful, caring professors (and Dean). If there is anything specific you are curious about, don't hesitate to ask. I feel this school deserves a lot more attention than it gets. I was accepted to St. Pauls in Queens, which was only a 5 minute ride from my home. I opted for Hopfer because of the overall feel of the school. If you haven't attended the open house, I highly suggest you do. There is one today, 5/16, at 1pm and 6pm.

I'm finishing my first semester at Hopfer. I am thinking back to the first test and clinical and can't believe the amount of progress I have made and the skills learned. I think you will be hard pressed to find an evening program that is more convenient (2 nights per week + Saturday clinical). The school is NLN accredited and the most recent graduating class had a 100% NCLEX pass rate, which is directly correlated to the faculty's dedication. We have approx. 35 students in the class with roughly 1/3 being male. I work full time and it has been very manageable, but you need to create a routine. Many students (including myself) travel from Queens and pay the toll to attend the school. It's only 15 minutes north of the Whitestone Bridge. Clinicals are held at Sound Shore Hospital. I just received my CPR card yesterday. It took about 3 weeks to get. It could be that only 15 people signed onto Moodle? I also ordered most of the books and a nurse kit that includes a stethoscope, pen light, ruler, and scissors. Just seemed easier to get a package. I am still taking developmental psych right now so, I have limited time for the reading.

Wow.. I just looked at the reading list through Moodle. Very excited though!

Hi, I did order my uniform. They charge $55 for the package of top, patch, and name tag. You are charged extra for the pants because you have a choice of different styles/material. I have not seen the reading and/or book list. Was that sent to you separately? There is a lot to do before the program starts!

I dropped my deposit off today. I was told this is the largest male class ever, 15 total. Previous years have been 2-3.
