So you don't have to sit one on one for a designated 100 hours? You just have to be able to communicate, review, the project etc? Overall, how would you rate your experience? Did you do flex path or traditional? Glad you completed the program! Congrats!

I can't do UTA because it's only offered in Texas. I'm starting Chamberlain in July.

I'm sure you are wanting the recent graduate to respond but I thought I'd also respond. You have your foundation and training. If you enjoy psych, why not focus in on the FNP program and stay in that direction once you complete? It never hurts to continue to learn but I think once you get back into it, your basic knowledge will kick back in. Good luck

Well... I've officially been accepted to Chamberlain. I like that they are equally accredited. Chamberlain allows you to do clinical hours where you work. Frontier will not. Chamberlain has one weekend to attend and a Frontier has two which are basically both one week long. Chamberlain's set up is in 8 week sessions so even if the course is tough, it's only 8 weeks long and then you move on to something else. I also had the opportunity to chat with a Chamberlain graduate who is now a FNP. She explained in detail how well prepared you are to take the final certification once completed. Chamberlain's program is set up where you can take one course at a time vs 3 if needed. You can also double up on some "if" you want to. My my gut felt like it was a better fit.

I have an additional question. Just wondering if you know the answer. The clinical component (125 hrs) is 8 weeks x's 5, for a total of 10 months basically. Can you speed up the hours for the clinical portion or do they have to be done "per session?" 10 months worth of this plays a huge role on work/life balance. With Frontier the clinical hours can be bulked up in as little as 4 mo's to 10 mo's. Just wondering! Ty

Congrats!! I'm starting in July 2016. I've heard negatives and positives about Chamberlain. Did you feel that you learned enough between course work and the clinicals to feel confident as a new FNP? I I work with FNPs who graduated from Frontier and swear by their program. I'm still leaning toward Chamberlain. I like their set up AND I can do my clinicals where I work. This will be so much easier for me and I won't feel nervous asking questions! Any advice, comments, concerns, did you feel prepared for certification etc? ty

Yes....that will be great! I have kids but I plan on doubling up too. I did with UTA. I was considering Frontier also because I work with FNPs who graduated from there. They all swear by the school. I just like Chamberlain's set up better. We'll see.

From what I understand, you go over the assessments listed above for the first day. Then you are partnered with someone on the second day and you are randomly given one of those. You have to work through the assessment and figure out possible treatment options and determine a dx. Thus far, nobody has failed this.

Earning an advanced nursing degree is an exciting step to take in your career. It's an experience that is both challenging and rewarding. For nurses interested in earning their Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialty track at Chamberlain, the immersion weekend is an excellent opportunity to learn and apply new skills as well as to engage with their professors and fellow students. The MSN-FNP specialty track continues to grow since its introduction in 2013 and last winter a cohort of students attended the immersion weekend at our Addison, IL campus. The immersion weekend is a part of course NR-509: Advanced Physical Assessment as the lab component. It's an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience and provides the opportunity to observe, participate and be evaluated on clinical assessment skills [h=1]Who is involved?[/h]FNP students in the last course before starting their practicum take part in the immersion weekend. They're joined by FNP faculty members – including both fulltime and visiting professors. These are the professors who have been teaching the students all along, and now they get the chance to meet in person and make a deeper connection. [h=1]What all do students do during the weekend and Why?[/h]The focus of the weekend is to have students demonstrate that they know how to perform certain episodic assessments. During the first day, students will spend time with their professors going through five skill stations, assessing and diagnosing mock-patients. The following assessments are performed: Generalized abdominal pain Cough Non-specific headache Head, eyes, ears, nose and throat Skin rash The goal of the assessments is to provide students with experience in addressing the chief complaints they'll most likely encounter as FNPs. They get to see what performing these assessments looks like, as well as the tools and techniques involved. On the second day, students are called upon to demonstrate how to perform one of the five assessments. [h=1]Where does it take place?[/h]Although the most recent immersion weekend took place at our Addison, IL campus, future weekends are slated be held at the Q Center in St. Charles, IL. The site was selected for its full-service conference facilities and ability to allow students to stay onsite during the weekend, minimizing hotel travel times and maximizing their one-on-one time with fellow students and professors. [h=1]When does this take place in the program?[/h]Students take part in the immersion weekend when they have three semesters or about one calendar year left before graduating. This is one of their final courses before embarking on their practicum experiences. [h=1]How long does the immersion take?[/h]Students arrive the Friday leading into the weekend. This allows them time to check-in to their hotel and get situated. The immersion itself starts on Saturday morning. Dean Distler welcomes everyone with an opening keynote before students and faculty break out to the skill sessions. The day ends with dinner and leaves ample time for students to prepare for their demonstration the next day. On Sunday, the students perform one of the five assessments based on a random drawing. Once through, their immersion is complete.
