Does your hospital allow for you to work weekends only? I have some nurse friends who do this and their significant other (also nurse) works the weekday shifts. Depends on the hospital of course, but this one in particular allows it because so many nurses have kids and want to work the weekends when their significant other is home to watch them. Childcare is so expensive! The younger, single nurses want the weekends off so they take up the weekday shifts...the trade off is great for all involved. My best friend does this and she is home during the week with the babies but still gets a few full days with her hubby nurse (his off day). She is gone on the weekends but he is off and has lots of his own time with babies.

My first job out of school was in case management with an insurance company. The pay wasn't as good as a floor nursing job but the hours were wonderful and it was stress free! Many of the nurses could work from home when they wanted. Because I wanted floor nursing, it took me some time to find a job after this because I technically had experience but at the same time didn't... I was in a strange position when filling out job apps. Since you know floor nursing is not for you, you won't have this issue. You also could perform in home nursing assessments for insurance companies. Or what about school nursing? Camp nurse? Doctors office? I don't know much about it but research nursing or IT nursing.... the options are endless for a nurse and it is not so cookie cutter as many people think. You do NOT need to be a floor nurse to be a great and successful nurse! My own mother was only a floor nurse for 6 months then went on to home care, then got her masters, worked in a management position at a nursing agency and eventually started her own company which now has over 80 employees! Do not let people judge you on this decision!! Best of luck to you :)

Hi Lima--I actually take mine tomorrow and Fri so I can update you once I have finished. I've never taken the class before so I have been reviewing the material just to be safe. The instructor didn't say it was neccesary but I figured I would just in case. Haven't taken it yet though so maybe someone else can help you out. Good luck!!

I was looking into taking a class at CPRWorld so I'm glad it's getting good reviews. Do they send you material to review/study before the class starts or any exams to take before you arrive? I've never taken ACLS before. Thanks!

Some of my friends graduated at the same time as you and still don't have experience. I'm not sure the name of the hospital but 2 of them recently got calls from a hospital in Tallahassee... might be worth a shot to try there if you're close or willing to relocate.

I agree with what sbostonRN said... a lot of hospitals, especially the major ones in Boston, are requiring you to have your BSN. The job market is very tough for new nurses. I would also recommend getting a job as an aide at a hospital while you're in school, this will get your foot in the door and you will be able to apply for jobs as an internal employee which gives you an advantage. I wish I had done that while in school! My friends who did were able to find jobs pretty quickly while I struggled.

Hi AMAC! I too am relocating to San Diego without much experience. I've worked as a nurse for about a year but it's in more of an office setting (not acute) so I'm nervous about finding a job. I will be moving in 2 months and am just starting to apply now. From what I have read in other posts, go for the jobs that say "preferred" as the experience isn't neccesarrily required. Tildor, any tips on places that are hiring or where we should apply? Congrats on your job! SD is amazing and I'm beyonnddd excited to move :)
