Nursing Theories....help please!
Hello everyone! For a project, I had to create an educational program for my local hospital. When patients present to the ER requesting detox for substance abuse, the RN is supposed to assess the patient and score†their symptoms accordingly. Patients must be in active withdrawal to be admitted to the unit. They then notify the detox unit of their assessment, and request for admission. It was discovered that the RNs were not scoring the patients appropriately. When the patient would arrive to detox for admission, the RN would assess them and find that the patient is not eligible for admission, as they were not in withdrawal. This is a cause of concern as there are many patients who present requesting in-patient detox ( in active withdrawal) and are being denied due to a lack of beds. My program is going to institute proper training and educational information for the RN's in the ER. I have to identify a theory (nursing or non-nursing) that frames this project. I have a non-nursing theory that I could use; however, I can't help but wonder if there is a nursing theory I am overlooking. I have spent the past 2 days researching a nursing theory, and I still come up short. Am I missing something? Would anyone be able to offer any suggestions in regards to a nursing theory that may be applicable? TIA!

Help! Advice needed!
Hello everyone! I am in need of advice! I just started a new job a few months ago. I left my ft job for this one to spend more time at home with my son and work on my BSN. This was something my husband and I agreed on and I am very happy with this decision as we both felt I needed to, "slow down" in a sense. I am also expecting my second son any day now :) I have noticed I am being asked to work extra shifts at least once a week by my manager, as we have call-outs and it appears that we are short staffed. I have been turning the extra hours down every time he asks because I have set days in which I have childcare arranged so I can be to work by 3pm. Additionally, I have a lot on my plate at home in terms of my son, school and getting ready for baby number 2. Also, I make plans on the days I am off to spend time with my family. I have told my boss that I do not have anyone to watch my son and I am being honest when I tell him I have plans already. Am I being a brat about this? I fell guilty when I tell him that I cannot work; however, I do not lie about it. I never had this problem at my previous job so that is why I am reaching out for a little advice.....Should I be trying to make every attempt to go in or cancel plans to work extra shifts? Thanks so much!

You all CAN do this!
I seriously made this my life. I ate, slept and breathed nursing school. I didn't have much of a social life, spent my evenings and weekends stuyding. I can't tell you how many family functions and get together's I missed just so I could study for an exam or practice my skills for evals. I only worked about 6 hours a week. I was lucky in the fact that my fiance and I saved up enough money so I could finish this degree and he was the sole provider for the last two years of nursing school. You all can do this!

first semester student
Best of luck everyone! My best advice: remain dedicated to the program. Make this your life. Study hard, get a good study group together, devote a lot of time in lab practicing your skills for evals....remember, if you have a question, ASK. NEVER assume! You can do this! Just make sure you dedicate your time to this! It is not easy but if you take this seriously, you will do great!

You all CAN do this!
I just graduated from nursing school this past May. I passed my boards July 6th this year and was immediately hired for the OR. There IS a light at the end of the tunnel, one that I never thought I would ever see. It was not an easy journey by far but I am so glad I did this and stuck to it. I became Nursing club president, nursing peer tutor and won several different nursing awards and scholarships. I made this my life and worked so hard to be where I am today. I basically put my whole life on hold to complete this dream of mine. YOU ALL CAN DO THIS! DON'T GIVE UP! :redbeathe

How I passed my NCLEX...hooray for good pop up!
I don't know if this will help anyone...but ya never know -NCLEX applications for the iphone -ATI review: I found this to be helpful in review of content. My coach gave me A LOT of great advice and a lot of "homework" to do that I found really helped. We reviewed my weak areas and worked through them. I did find their questions were very easy, however, the content review REALLY did help me. -KAPLAN question bank: I purchased the kaplan question bank. I did not get the book or learn the decision tree. I found the questions to be more like the ones on NCLEX. -Review books with CD's -I did at least 100 questions a day. I did my tests in groups of 30-50. -I designated my days to studing and "attending" my ATI review. I worked evenings and I did questions after work. I basically designated my life for that month and a half to nothing but prepping for the NCLEX. I took my boards July 6th and got the good pop up! PS-Everyone who passed from my class got the good pop up and everyone who falied were allowed to register again! I was fortunate enough to get hired almost immediately out of nursing school. I was hired for the OR and that has been something I've always wanted to do! They offer a training program here at my hospital and only two of were selected! Keep your head up everyone! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!!

Kaplan or ATI
I did ATI AND I purchased the kaplan question bank. ATI helped me with content, however, the questions were very easy. I liked how I had a coach and I found that helped me with any questions or content areas I had diffuculty in. I found kaplans question bank to be very benifical as I did not use the decision tree. I passed on the first try.
