I agree with passionflower. I think that you don't have to limit yourself to your local area This can be done as tele-health also wher you can have tele health equipment such as a scale and BP monitor that downloads information to you. Speak to the clients via phone and find out what they're doing right and wrong and guiding them in the right direction. The scale is an accountability tool and so are the phone calls and that is exactly what they are paying for--for you to hold them accountable, keep them on track, encourage and reach their goals. This could be a big business.

There are too many gatekeepers in the physician offices and clinics. Your information may never get to "the decider" :-). It's great to do the one week followup call and the fact that you sent the letter/brochure gives you a reason to make this call...so that is a great idea(as long as you can speak with the person who makes the decisions). A way to get past the gatekeepers is first to know who is the person who makes the decision. Next send them "lumpy mail"--mail that has to sit on top because of its shape. You could include a minature flip flop saying...wanted to get my foot in the door and then show them what you have to offer once you have their attention. Or send very important contacts a box by fedex etc with maybe cookies with a note saying...here are some cookies to enjoy as you read the information I've sent you. The key is to get to the person who makes the decisions. This does not have to be expensive. If you get $1000 worth of business and you spend $10...isn't it worth it? You can do sequential mailings. It usually takes more than one contact for someone to refer/buy from you. A newsletter is a good idea also. You can not only send these out to clients but also have a newsletter sent to people who refer you clients. Show them how you are helping their patients and give them helpful tips that will benefit them also. I could keep going on... :-) Goodluck!

Nurses Do Have Choices! We limit ourselves and get stuck in the mindset of being an employee as opposed to being a person who can start their own business, dictate their own hours and have autonomy, respect and independence. Nurses have so many choices. You could be a health writer and write your own column. You could be a script writer for movies or review scripts and scences to see if it's medically correct. There is the start your staffing agency route too but that is not the only route. Use your nursing knowledge and your passion for photography and be a medical photographer. Start a travel medicine clinic. Teach nursing skills to student nurses. Develop board games to help teach nursing. Invent a product you know will help all nurses. I saw a website where a nurse is a remote wound care consultant for areas that don't have access to great health care. Travel with patients to take care of them when they go to India to travel for medical tourism. Start a company that accompanies loved ones from one destination to another if they are not able to travel on their own. The list of opportunities is endless. And if you think they're not then check out the laryngospasms. They are a singing group of anesthetists. Nurses have choices and more than they know.
