I'm an LNA. I recently started work at an apartment complex for handicapped people. My main client is a young guy in a wheelchair with average (normal) cognition. I was warned prior to working with him that he asks for 'favors' during showers. My first time showering him alone was a few days ago. He said "don't be afraid to touch it" when I was washing his genitalia. I just ignored this and washed him like I would anyone. He then wanted me to inspect a small mark on his scrotum. He said it was from a vasectomy. He said he wanted me to inspect it. It was just a tiny purple mark. He asked me to inspect it further. I told him I'm not a nurse- just an LNA but would leave a note for his nurse if he wanted. He said no thanks. During the washing I tried not to notice he was semi erect. I have to go back to take care of this client again. Any suggestions on how to handle this? My boss already knows he tries to initiate sexual favors and told me that one LNA just walked out on him but the rest just ignore his remarks and do what they have to do. He was threatened with getting kicked out of the place he lives over issues like this. From what I understand he (the client) just doesn't care about his life. He has a terminal illness.

Thank you for your reply, you made some very good points! After reading the posts of yours and the other nurses who replied I have decided not to jeopardize my chance at becoming a nurse. I worked very hard to get into the program I'm in. I'm not going to do anything to ruin it even if it means having to rely on meds with potentially horrible side effects instead of switching to CBD oil.

Hi, thank you for your thoughts and input on my post, I appreciate it! I think you are right, it's not worth the risk of potentially getting kicked out of the program. The meds I take, I take before bedtime, they have worn off by morning and they do not affect my quality of care of patients in clinical. I wish I didn't have to rely on them. I would like to be med free.

Thank you for your input! I am aware that most (possibly all) places of employment drug test medical staff, I am glad they do and I feel they should. From what I've researched the side effects of CBD oil (if any) aren't nearly as malignant as the meds I am on currently and have very little THC. Hence the dilemma. I am still hoping for some advice.

Hello, I am currently in an RN program (associates 2 year). I have a disability the school is aware of my disability. Due to this medical disability I take several medications (via current prescriptions) at night. The prescriptions I take have possible side effects (memory, cognitive ect over time). I found out recently that I qualify for medical marijuana. I am wondering if CBD oil could be an effective and safer substitute for the synthetic meds I take. I would like to stop the synthetic meds because I worry what they might do to my brain over time. I have tried living med- free for periods of time and life was so painful I wanted to die. I haven't tried switching over to CBD oil yet because I worry it will show up on a drug test. I was drug tested upon entry into the nursing program. I passed- the meds I take aren't the kind that would make me fail a drug test. I'm worried if I do switch from synthetic meds to CBD oil that I will test positive on a drug test. I'm worried that if I stick with the synthetic meds I take I will end up with early Alzheimers. The Board of nursing in my state does not make allowances for medical marijuana users. If a nurse tests positive they lose their license. What do you guys think I should do? I don't know if/ when I will be drug tested again in this program. Becoming a nurse is very important to me- I feel it is my calling. My brain is also very important to me- I don't want to end up with early Alzheimers.

Hi, I was hoping to get some advice from those who have experienced this. I am pretty new to the job (a year under my belt now) as a PCA. I have had two clients who yell at me and put me down. One of which refused to let me do my job (cleaning them after they had a messy BM in their pants). This person also stated flat out that they don't like me. I am very respectful and kind and do my job as well as I can but I don't want to invade the space of a client who doesn't want my help. Also it's very stressful being treated badly. I could use some advice. I have talked with my supervisor who just sent me back to the same client. Any suggestions? I'm in school planning on furthering my career to upgrade to an RN position eventually but situations like this make me wonder if I am choosing the right career.

I like this post! I have recently dealt with the same type of thing. I am not an atheist but I do have my own (non Christian) spiritual belief system. I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness and it was never natural or comfortable for me. I found it very oppressive. Although I appreciate some of what the bible has to offer (the teachings of goodness and kindness) I strongly disagree with some of the things it has to say. Also I don't believe in Satan at all. I was asked by a patient of mine to listen to a bible study with them and they were very insistent on knowing my beliefs and then putting me down for not having the same (Christian) beliefs as they have. I dealt with it by letting them know in a kind manner I'm glad they find comfort in their belief system and that I respect it and that I would like the same respect and also that they weren't going to convert me and that I didn't want it to be an ongoing thing of stress for us. If my patient had been on their death bed and wanted me to pray with them then I feel that would be different. If their last wish is for me to pray with them then I will pray with them (perhaps secretly to my own deity(s)) just to make them comfortable. I don't think this is right for everyone though. I think as long as you are kind, respectful and do your job well you are doing great and I would hope you would get some respect in return. This isn't always the case though. Patients can be very disrespectful. Sometimes you may need a bit of space. I think giving them space to do their praying was a good idea especially if you felt they would be disrespecting you or you belief (or lack of one).

Hi, I have a GED and my prerequisite classes in Algebra, Chemistry and Biology finished. I want go for a degree in Nursing and have searched online for RN Programs in NH and I keep finding online schools with bad feedback. I wouldn't mind going to school online but many of the reviews I've read are bad. Can anyone please help me find a good school in NH (preferably near Portsmouth) that offer RN or BSN programs? Advice welcome, Thank you.
