Hi there! So, I just started a new job as a med/surg RN at a rural hospital in my area at the beginning of August. I was really hoping for a residency job at a large hospital that was close to my house, but I had applied in April and hadn't heard anything when I was offered the job at the hospital I'm at now. I've finished my classroom orientation and started on the floor two weeks ago and I really really am loving it so far. The only thing I'm not so fond of is that it takes me 40 minutes to drive there. I'll be orienting until the middle of October and then I'll be on my own! eek & yay!! Anywho, this morning, the HR lady from the residency job called me (five months later..)! It would be six months of orienting which would be nice and it would be a faster pace than my rural hospital, but I'd be making $5/hr LESS than I am now and I'm not sure I need 6 months of orienting. However the Big hospital is only 15 minutes from my house. My question is what do you guys think? What should I do? I know what I'm leaning toward, but I just would like to hear the opinions of my fellow nurses!

Sorry the delay in response, it's been a crazy week! :) under my "Summary of qualifications" part on my resume, I included: -Successfully completed several clinical experiences at various hospitals in the area, including rotation on psychiatric, labor and delivery, pediatrics, medical-surgical, and step down units. - During these clinical rotations I have competently passed medications, and assisted in or performed several other essential nursing tasks. - 88 hours of precepting completed at ************** on the rehabilitation unit. I'm no expert, that's just what I put on mine! GOOOOD LUCK!! :w00t:

I have the same background as you! :lol2:ADN, graduated in MAy and absolutely ZERO healthcare experience, other than NS. I applied for ev-er-y-thing that was listed on all of the hospital/ healthcare system websites in my area. I also internet searched nursing homes in my area (not sure if you're interested in LTC or not) and made a list of names of the facilities, phone numbers, and addresses. I called all of the hospitals that I'd appled to to check up on my application and called all of the LTC facilities on my list, asked if they were hiring RNs or accepting applications and if they said yes, i let them know I'd be on my way over toapply and did just that. I think I filled out maybe 75 apps, had 3 interviews (2 LTC and 1 hospital) and was offered 2 jobs. I took the hospital job. It's med/surg and I started today. That's just my story, I hope it helps! I had a prof one semester that was terrrrrrible. I mean really. She couldn't even pronounce words from her own powerpoint. Anyway, our first test was coming up and we had covered Diabetes Insipidus, SIADH, Addison's, and Cushings. So we all studied the material we had covered. I remember this perfectly. There were 47 questions on the test, 7 of them were math, 15 of them were from those four diseases, and the rest were on blood transfusions. I know how important it is to know the right procedure for blood transfusions, but we weren't going to cover that till like chapter 5 or something. Anyway, I barely passed and I have no idea how. most people failed. I'm sooo glad that's over!! :smackingf

Hi There! I am a new nurse and I start my new job on the med/surg floor of a rural hospital on Moday! I'm so excited. We are allowed to wear what ever scrubs we want. I bought a scrub vest that has flowers on it and I think it's really cute, but I'm not sure I want to look like a total nerd if it's not in style or something! Any thoughts would be appreciated! Hi there! congrats on getting through nursing school! :) I graduated back in May from an ADN program, so I feel your pain;) Anywho, I applied for literally ev-er-y-thing I could. Honestly, I didn't get any bites until after I took boards. And now, three interviews and two job offers later, I have a job at a local hospital on their med/surg floor! I start on the 8th ... So my advice would be don't get discouraged, and keep on keepin on! :)

I'm a new RN with zero experience and I just got a PRN job. I made it clear, however, that my real intention is to get into a full time position as soon as possible. The lady who interviewed me told me that they are expecting to have 4 full time postions open up within the next two months (so here's to hopeing/ praying!). In my area, it's proving to be more difficult than we all thought to nail down some nursing jobs! With my new job, I get 3 weeks of classroom training and 6 weeks of full time precepting. The main reason I took the job is because I figured a job as better than no job! :)

Hi laceface24! First off, congratulations on getting in to your program! What a great vacation surprise! :) No matter which you choose, I think you will have great opportunities! A major hospital in my area offers an ICU residency program for new nurses who have completed an ICU preceptorship and I have a good friend who just had her second interview for an ED position at another local hospital. They told her they usually don't hire new grads in the ER, but since she had done her preceptorship in a level 1 trauma center, she had a good chance. The nurse supervisor even winked at her. :) So If your area is anything like mine, you'll do well either way. Anyway, I wish you wisdom as you make your decision! Also, It's great that you are considering all of these things now :)
